Campbell Wrestling competes in Hoosier Duals, defeats Future SoCon foe SIU-Edwardsville

Bloomington, Ind. - Campbell University redshirt sophomore Nick Rex (Lakeland, Fla.) went 3-0 in his 165-pound matches on Saturday as the Fighting Camels defeated SIU-Edwardsville 21-10 and fell to Indiana 31-7 and Northern Illinois 22-14 in the Hoosier Duals. CU moves to 4-4 on the season with the victory over future conference rival SIU-Edwardsville.

Rex won consecutive matches against NIU and IU by 4-2 decisions before claiming a 9-3 decision over SIUE's Gabe Hocum. Mark Hartenstine (Easton, Penn.) took major decision wins over NIU's Tyler Argue (12-1) and SIUE's Dillon Poussan (9-1). James Cook (Madera, Calif.), John Weakley (Cleveland, Ohio) and Joe Nolan (Jackson, N.J.) also posted two victories on the day.

In the opening match of the day against the Northern Illinois Huskies, Campbell fell behind 13-4 before Rex's 4-2 decision over Matt Mougin and Cook's 11-3 major decision over Caleb Busson brought the Camels within two points at 13-11. NIU halted the momentum with a pin at 184 pounds to widen its lead to 19-11. The Huskies went on to close out CU 22-14.

Campbell opened up the match against Big 10 member Indiana with two very competitive individual matches. Josh Fisher lost a 7-6 decision to Hoosier Zach Zimmer, and Jordan Tolbert dropped a 4-2 decision to Joe Duca. The Hoosier then raced out to a 19-0 advantage before Rex bested Sawyer Morris at 165 pounds. IU would go on for a 31-7 victory.

After falling behind SIU-Edwardsville 6-3, Campbell took victories in six of the final seven weight classes to rally for a 21-10 team win. Hartenstine's major decision at 149 pounds brought the team score even at 6-6, and Ryan Krecker put the Camels in front for good with a 6-4 decision over Steve Ross.

Campbell returns to the mat on Dec. 9 as the Camels travel to Lexington, Va. for a Southern Conference showdown with the VMI Keydets. Start time is set for 7:30 p.m.

Cougars Fall at Hoosier Duals

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Brendan Murphy and Cole Brandt each won a pair of matches Saturday but the Cougars dropped three dual meets at the Hoosier Duals.

SIUE's toughest match was a 27-15 loss to host Indiana. The Cougars also were defeated by Northern Illinois 25-7 and Campbell 21-10. Campbell is a future Southern Conference opponent.

"Sometimes matchups make all the difference," said SIUE Head Coach David Ray. SIUE didn't have an urgency on offense and seemed unsure on the mat, noted Ray.

Murphy and Brandt both were winners in the Indiana match. Murphy scored a first-period pin at 133 pounds over Indiana's Joe Duca in 1:23. Brandt won the closest match of the dual with a 3-2 decision at 184 pounds over Cheney Dale.

Kyle Lowman, an SIUE 157-pounder, scored a huge victory with a third-period pin over Ryan Konz of Indiana. The time of the pin was 6:14.

While Indiana won 7 of 10 matches from the Cougars, Northern Illinois managed 8 of 10 from the Cougars. After NIU raced out to a 15-0 lead, Gabe Hocum broke the string as he picked up SIUE's first win with an 8-6 victory over Matt Mougin at 165 pounds. Josh Wood collected a major decision with a 12-4 win over Shane Rosenberry.

"I think 197 may have been the toughest weight class there," said Ray.

SIUE dropped its first-ever meeting to Campbell but picked up wins from Murphy and Brandt as well as 141-pounder Logun Taylor.

Ray said the Cougars have to overcome old beliefs. "You have to go out there believing you are going to win when you go out on the mat," he said.
