Appalachian Wrestling Opens Dual Season with Two Wins
BOONE, N.C. - In the team's first duals of the season, Appalachian State wrestling (2-0) had little trouble knocking off both of its opponents. After downing Anderson (0-3) by a score of 32-12, the Apps swept Belmont Abbey (0-3), 50-0 at Varsity Gym on Sunday.
Despite the positive results, coach JohnMark Bentley had some frustration with the less-than-perfect day.
"I'm disappointed with the way our guys competed in the first match," Bentley said. "We didn't control the action, and we had spent a lot of time in practice working on scoring points. Our guys have to learn to be ready for every bout and not let down."
"In the second match," Bentley continued. "We did much better, and I'm proud of the way we handled our competition.
After factoring in Sunday's results, Bentley will select his lineup to travel to the Keystone Classic hosted by Pennsylvania on Sun., Nov. 20 in Philadelphia, Pa.

Joseph Finishes Fourth for VMI Wrestling at the NC State Wolfpack Open's 165 Pound Class
RALEIGH, N.C. - Freshman Carry Joseph represented VMI in the 2011 NC State Wolfpack Open this Sunday, claiming fourth place in the 165 pound weight class in his first action as a Keydet.
"We had some real solid matches against some solid opponents. It's one of those tournaments that we can get a lot of matches in and got some looks where we need to improve," said VMI head coach John Trudgeon.
Joseph fell in his first match against Virginia Tech's Nick Zulzer, who pinned Joseph at the 5:43 mark. But a resilient Joseph wrestled back in the consolation bracket, pulling a 16-4 major decision over Davidson's Chris Cirenza followed by a second-round pin against Old Dominion's Adrin Taylor. In the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket, Joseph collected his third win of the weekend with an 11-7 decision over Issah Meade of Virginia Tech. Joseph had a chance to wrestle for third place after edging Nick Rex of Campbell 5-3. In the third-place match, North Carolina's John Staudenmayer won 8-5 over Joseph.
Wrestling up a weight class at 174 pounds, Matthew Brock reached the consolation quarterfinals, falling in his first match against Vinny Waldenhauser of Virginia 3-0. Brock drew Matthew Kowalski of Southern Conference foe Gardner-Webb. Brock got the best of Kowalski, pinning him in 5:00. Brock followed up in the third round of consolations with another pin, this time against Alex Morales of Appalachian State at the 6:03 mark. Brock bowed out in the consolation quarterfinals by a 3-1 decision against North Carolina's Andre Petruski.
At 133 pounds, VMI's Ryan Goodsell reached the semifinals of the main draw, opening the day with a narrow 10-9 decision over Jordan O'Donnell, representing Virginia Tech. Goodsell had a little more breathing room in the quarterfinals, knocking off Brett Boston from Appalachian State 7-5. In the main draw semifinals, Goodsell fell 6-2 versus Virginia's Joseph Martinez, who finished as the Open's runner up. In the consolations, Goodsell's afternoon was cut short against Matt Nelson, falling by pin at 5:11.
Another Keydet reached the semifinals of the consolation bracket, this time it was Zeb Stewart in the 141-pound class. Stewart fell 9-4 in the opening round against NC State's Darrius Little. In the consolations, Stewart pinned Gardner-Webbs Travis Richardson in 6:26 while grabbing a 2-1 win over teammate David Yost. Little and Stewart squared off once again, but this time, Little pinned Stewart in the first round.
