College of Charleston women 26th, men 28th
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Sophomore Dena O’Brien improved dramatically on her 6K school record as the College of Charleston men’s and women’s cross country teams competed at the NCAA Southeast Regional Saturday.
The women’s team finished 26th and the men’s team finished 28th in the competition in what was one of the biggest races the Cougars have competed in all season with 35 women’s teams and 32 men’s teams.
O’Brien ran 57 seconds faster than the 21:37 6K she recorded at the Pre-National meet earlier this year, which stood as the previous school mark. Compared to last year in this meet, O’Brien has made huge strides as she finished 61st in 21:46 a season ago at the NCAA Regional on the same course.
On the men’s side sophomore Andrew Nelson led the Cougars as he finished 152nd in 33:45, his time good for 10th in the school record book.
This race concluded the cross country season for the Cougars. Next up will be the indoor track & field season.

Elon women 21st, men 23rd
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Elon University men’s and women’s cross country teams concluded action in the NCAA Southeast Regional today, Nov. 12, at E.P. Tom Sawyer Park. The women took 21st in the 6K race with 240 points, while the men finished 23rd in the 10K with 647 points. The men and women combined to add six new times to the program’s all-time performance list.
Junior Morgan Denecke led the Phoenix women with the second-best 6K time in program history of 21:52.5 for 65th. Sophomore Allyson Oram, junior Emily Tryon and freshman Haylee Dawe replaced the sixth through eighth times on the performance list with new personal bests. Oram (22:18.3) took 95th, while Tryon (22:19.7) and Dawe (22:31.7) placed 98th and 112th.
Sophomore Kylie Womack and junior Christine Pacewicz finished in 180th and 182nd, respectively, with times of 23:37.8 and 23:38.9. Sophomore Brennan McDavid capped the women’s race for Elon after finishing 202nd with a time of 24:03.6.
Freshman Luis Vargas was the top Elon finisher in the men’s race, finishing 92nd with a time of 32:34.0. Redshirt freshman Sean Magee followed with a time of 32:37.0 that placed him 106th. The two times from the SoCon All-Freshmen performers now rank third and fourth on Elon’s all-time 10K performance list.
Freshman Ari Rothschild (33:26.1) and senior Clay Sankey (33:53.3) were the next pair of runners to cross the finish line for the Phoenix, coming in 140th and 158th, respectively. Sophomore Ben Perron placed 164th with a time of 34:07.8, while freshman Adam Bernstein and senior Conor O’Brien crossed the finish line at 34:38.4 and 35:37.8 for 179th and 199th.
The women’s race consisted of 35 teams with the Elon women defeating three other SoCon schools (College of Charleston, Davidson and Western Carolina). The men’s race, which was comprised of 32 teams, saw the Phoenix defeating SoCon school Western Carolina.
North Carolina State won the men’s team title with 68 points, while the Wolfpack’s Ryan Hill won the individual title with a time of 29:48.8. Virginia was the winner of the women’s title with 107 points. North Carolina’s Kendra Schaaf claimed first in the 6K race with a time of 19:52.9.

Samford's D'Alessio finished 14th
TUSCALOOSA, ALA. ---- Lauren D'Alessio represented the Samford Bulldogs at the NCAA South Regional meet Saturday on the campus of the University of Alabama. The junior finished 14th overall in a field of nearly 200 in the 6k with a time of 20:56.8.
The Pelham, Ala., native was one of only 16 competitors to finish in under 21 minutes. She has led the team all season, including a second-place finish at the SoCon Championships two weeks ago.
D'Alessio's high finish will give her an opportunity at a bid to the NCAA Championships, which will take place on Monday, Nov. 21 in Terre Haute, Ind. Championship fields will be announced by the end of this weekend.
Appalachian State men 18th, women 20th
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Appalachian State University men’s cross country wrapped up its season with a 18th-place finish at the 2011 NCAA Southeast Region Championship Saturday morning at E.P. “Tom” Sawyer Park.
The Mountaineers were led by junior Will Raby, who finished the 10k run in 77th-place with a time of 32:05.6. Senior Chris Moen finished his well-accomplished cross country career with a 84st-place finish at the 32:14.3 mark, while junior Alex Taylor finished a second behind Moen.
Junior Mike Lilley crossed the finish line at the 32:33.7 mark, while senior Nick Kelly rounded out the Apps top-five with a time of 32:45.1
North Carolina State won the meet with five runners in the top-25 and were followed by Eastern Kentuckey to earn the meet’s two team automatic bids for the NCAA Championsip. UNC Greensboro’s Paul Chelimo finished second overall to lead the Spartans to a eighth-place finish. N.C. State’s Ryan Hill led the 218 man race with a time of 29:48.8.
Appalachian State University women’s cross country wrapped up its season with a 20th-place finish at the 2011 NCAA Southeast Region Championship Saturday morning at E.P. “Tom” Sawyer Park.
The Mountaineers were led by junior Amanda Hamilton for the fifth-straight meet and finished in 60th-place out of 240 runners with a time of 21:50.2.
Senior Hannah Orders finished her well-accomplished cross country career with an 81st-place finish at the 22:06.9 mark, while junior Sarah Williamson crossed the finish line with a time of 22:40.7.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Cagle crossed the finish line at the 22:42.5 mark and fellow sophomore Allison Cook rounded out the Apps top-five with a time of 23:02.4.
Virginia won the meet with three runners in the top-20 and were followed by fellow ACC foe North Carolina State to earn the meet’s two team automatic bids for the NCAA Championsip. UNC Greensboro led the Southern Conference with a seventh-place finish. North Carolina’s Kendra Schaaf won the individual title by completing the 6k-course with a time of 19:52.9.
Chattanooga’s Chris Berry finished 8th
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. --- University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior distance runner Chris Berry placed eighth at the NCAA South Region Championships Saturday morning at the Harry Pritchett Race Course earning all-region honors and a trip to Terre Haute, Ind., for the NCAA National Championships to be run at the end of the month.
Berry ran the 10-kilometer course in a time of 31:24.9 to lead the Mocs to a ninth place finish at the championships. Sophomore Lucas Cotter ran the course in a time of 31:52.7 placing 26th overall and was named to the All-Region Second Team. He ran the course in a time of 31:52.7
Florida State was the men’s overall winner followed by Florida. Both teams earned automatic bids to the NCAA and Berry was one of four individual qualifiers for the Nationals. The Mocs were just five points out of seventh place finishing with 263 points behind both Kennesaw State and Mississippi.
Berry has had a tough run through his senior season. Despite getting hit by a car during a training run and suffering through injuries, he never missed a race and pulled the Mocs through.
Sophomore Mark Cole was injured following the Southern Conference race and hasn’t run since. He placed 51st with a time of 32:57.4.
Nathan Wanuch placed 55th for the Mocs with a time of 33:03.0 while Austell was the fifth UTC runner across the finish line with a time of 34:47.1 in the 123rd spot.
Florida State’s David Forrester paced the field with a top place time of 30:43.3 followed by teammate Michael Fout in second at 30:46.0. Middle Tennessee’s Justus David was third and the top individual qualifier with a time of 30:51.5 followed by Florida State’s Brendan O’Neill in fourth. Florida’s Mark Parrish was the fifth runner across the line with Kennesaw State’s Nabil Hamid sixth,
Senior Tara Gietema led the Lady Mocs around the 6-kilomter course placing 83rd in her senior year with a time 22:46.4.
The Lady Mocs were down a runner with Sarah White-Woerner unable to compete Saturday morning. Freshman Keeley Stewart was the second Chattanooga runner across the line in a time of 24:12.7 followed by junior Morgan Buchanan with a time of 24:22.5.
Junior Mary Cumbee finished with a time of 24:55.5 and Jenna Nicks crossed the line in a time of 25:45.2 as the fifth scoring runner.
Berry will close out the cross country season Monday, November 21 at the NCAA National Championships in Terre Haute, Ind., at the Gibson Championship Course.
Davidson men 14th, women 28th
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Ryan Hopkins turned in the best performance ever by a Davidson runner at the NCAA Men’s Cross Country Southeast Region Championship on the University of Louisville’s E.P. Tom Sawyer Course Saturday morning. The senior broke the school 10K course record and earned all-region honors with a 12th place finish in 30:22.0 to lead the Wildcats to a 14th place finish.
Hopkins bested the school record of 31:07 held by Brent Ferrell since the NCAA Southeast Regionals in 1999. Ferrell placed 26th in that meet, which was the previous best finish by a Wildcat runner.
As a team, Davidson placed 14th with 409 points in the 32-team field of 218 runners. The Wildcats were 15 points behind 13th-place finishingWake Forest (394). They also finished ahead of notable teams such as Kentucky (16th place, 422 points), Clemson (17th, 422), Appalachian State (18th, 457) and Charlotte (21st, 570).
Junior Vincent Weir was Davidson’s second finisher with an 88th-place finish in 32:17.7, while classmates Demetrios Pagonis (97th, 32:29.8) and Wes Reynolds (102nd, 32:32.5) followed with times that rank among the top-10 best performers in Davidson history.
Sophomore Grayam Sailor-Tynes placed 111th in 32:45.9 to round out the ‘Cats’ top-five scoring group. Sophomore Andrew Lantz (115th, 32:55.2) and freshman Whitner Chase (136th, 33:18.6) were the sixth and seventh finishers for the ‘Cats.

Freshman Erin Osment led the Davidson women’s cross country team at the NCAA Women’s Cross Country Southeast Regional with an 86th place finish in 22:10.3 Saturday morning on the University of Lousiville’s E.P. Tom Sawyer 6K course.
Junior Natalie Atabek followed Osment in the 35-team, 240-runner field in 22:34.6 to place 115th, and was closely followed by Southern Conference Freshman of the Year, Sarah Paddon (117th, 22:36.0). Freshmen Manya Swick (190th, 23:48.7) and Lauren Carter (201st, 24:09.6) rounded out the top-five scoring group. Sophomore Maggie Rickard finished in 25:31.1.
Virginia won the team title with 107 points, while NC State trailed with 113 points to earn the automatic bids to the NCAA National Championship. The ACC claimed the top six positions. North Carolina senior Kendra Schaaf placed first individually in 19:52.9. She was the lone finisher under 20 minutes.
