SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The 2011 Southern Conference Men's Soccer Tournament semifinals and championship game will take place this weekend at the Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex in Boone, N.C.
No. 1 seed UNCG (9-7-2) will take on No. 5 seed and tournament host Appalachian State (10-4-4) in Friday's first semifinal, beginning at 4 p.m. That match will be followed by the second semifinal at 6:30 p.m. when second-seeded Furman (14-2-4) battles No. 6 seed Elon (7-10-2).
The championship match will pit the semifinal winners Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on ESPN3.
UNCG enters the weekend on a five-match unbeaten streak after claiming its seventh Southern Conference regular season championship in 15 seasons. The Spartans, which have also recorded five consecutive shutouts, blanked Wofford, 1-0, on Saturday night in the first round of the tournament.
Appalachian State earned a berth in the semifinals following a 2-0 quarterfinal win at Davidson on Sunday, avenging a loss to the Wildcats during the regular season.
The UNCG-ASU matchup is a rematch of the 2010 semifinal that UNCG won 1-0 in overtime, while it also brings the Spartans back to the site of their only league defeat this season, a 1-0 shutout at the hands of the Mountaineers on Oct. 8.
Furman, which enters the event ranked 16th in the nation in the latest NSCAA rankings, edged College of Charleston, 2-1, to advance to the semifinals.
Sixth-seeded Elon reached this weekend's play by virtue of a 1-0 win at No. 3 seed Georgia Southern on Sunday afternoon. A 2009 tournament finalist, Elon is looking to win its first SoCon championship.
The Paladins downed Elon, 3-1, during the regular season.
This year's four semifinalists have combined to win 17 of the 22 SoCon tournaments since the league began the event in 1988. Furman has claimed 11 titles, followed by UNCG (5) and Appalachian State (1).
Both of Friday's semifinal matches will be video-streamed free of charge through SoConSports.com with Joseph Shook on the call.
Sunday's championship match will be available on ESPN3 as Darren Goldwater delivers the play-by-play and seven-time SoCon Coach of the Year Charlie Slagle provides the color commentary.
The winner of the tournament will earn the Southern Conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Men's Soccer Championship. The NCAA selection show will air Monday, Nov. 14 on NCAA.com at 4:30 p.m. with first round matches slated for Thursday, Nov. 17.
