Smith Claims Victory at Winthrop Intercollegiate
ROCK HILL, S.C. - Junior Lauren Smith (Salisbury, N.C./UNCG) carded a 71-78=149 (+5) to win the individual medal at the Winthrop Intercollegiate on Sunday at the Rock Hill Country Club. The Mountaineers placed fourth at the event with a 313-310=623 (+47).
Smith earned her first-career win by one stroke over Gardner-Webb's Meghan Allum and Sammy Vass.
Rumbidzai Masamvu (Harare, Zimbabwe/Dominican Convent) improved from the first to second rounds with a 79-75=154 (+10) for eighth place.
Mimi Burke (Mooresville, N.C./Cannon School) carded an 81-79=160 (+16) and Yue Xu (Beijing, China/HuiJia Private School) bounced back from a first-round 82 with a 78 on Sunday to tie with Burke for 17th place.
Brittany Zachrich (Hickory, N.C./Montreat) tied for 30th with an 83-84=167 (+23).
GWU claimed the team title at 615 (+39), first strokes ahead of host Winthrop. Presbyterian placed third at 621, just two strokes ahead of Appalachian.
Representing the Southern Conference, The Citadel placed eighth at 672 (+96).
The Mountaineers return to action on Oct. 17-18 in Charleston, S.C. for the Wendy's Charleston Southern Intercollegiate.
Notes: Smith's 71 on Saturday was the lowest round of the season for ASU ... She is the second App to earn an individual win this fall, following Xu's title at the Terrier Intercollegiate.
Bulldogs Finish Final Round of Winthrop Invitational in Eighth Place
Rock Hill, S.C. - The Citadel Golf team finished in eighth place Sunday at the Winthrop Invitational held at the Rock Hill Country Club. Bulldog senior Bree Baumgartner continued her strong play in the fall season, carding a final-round 80 to finish the 36-hole event tied for 23rd with a 162 (+18).
The Dogs Alanna Jean-Keith posted a final round 86 to finish in a tie for 30th place at 167 (+23). Freshmen Kellie Anderson and TaKima Butler finished 36th and 43rd, respectively, after finishing with 171 (+27) and 184 (+40).
The 36-hole Winthrop Invitational was contested at the Rock Hill Country Club, a par-72, 6,007 yard layout.
Gardner-Webb (615) held off a strong challenge by host Winthrop (620) to win the team portion of the event. Presbyterian College placed third with a score of 621, while SoCon rival Appalachian State finished with a 623. ASU's Lauren Smith shot a final-round 78 to claim the individual crown at five-over 149. Gardner-Webb's Meghan Allum (150, +6) and Sammy Vass (150, +6), rounded out the top three.

SAMFORD WOMEN'S GOLF: RAIN HALTS PLAY AT 2011 LPGA XAVIER COLLEGIATE INVITATIONAL

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. --- For the second time this season, the Samford University women's golf team completed a 54-hole tournament with only 18 holes of play Sunday as the Bulldogs placed eighth at the rain-shortened LPGA Xavier Collegiate Invitational held at the par-72, 6,084-yard LPGA International Golf Course.
The annual LPGA Xavier Invitational was originally scheduled to encompass three days and 54 holes of competition. Due to incessant rain and soggy conditions at the LPGA International Golf Course, only the first round of play was completed Friday before the weather worsened.
The tournament's highly-competitive field included the following teams: Bethune-Cookman, Campbell, Daytona Beach, Florida Atlantic, Jacksonville, Lamar, Louisiana-Monroe, McNeese State, Mercer, North Dakota State, South Dakota State, Stetson and Xavier.
In Samford's lone round of the tournament, the Bulldogs carded a total team score of 317 Friday in what would eventually determine the final outcome of the event.
Samford finished the 2011 LPGA Xavier Collegiate Invitational in eighth place and was paced by junior Kayla Turner. Turner, the Bulldogs' native of Clarksville, Tenn., fired a first-round total of 76 and earned a tie for 13th place in the individual standings. Samford true freshmen Bailey Gray and Emily Stallings both tallied identical scores of 80 on Friday and finished tied for 33rd place in the competition.
Rounding out the Bulldogs' scoring this weekend were senior Sarah Butts and sophomore Natalie Mitchell. Butts concluded the tournament with a first-round score of 81, while Mitchell followed with an 18-hole tally of 84.
In its first tournament of the 2011 fall season, Samford also competed in a rain-shortened event at the Chris Banister Golf Classic which was hosted by Jacksonville State University in Huntsville, Ala., Sept. 4-6.
Samford dominated the sole round of competition and carded a tournament-best score of 294. The Bulldogs rallied for an eight-stroke victory against the second-place Jacksonville State Gamecocks and turned in the school's second best single-round score in history.
The Bulldogs finished the 2011 Chris Banister Golf Classic with four players in the top 10.
Samford's Turner and sophomore Alex Jasper both led the way with identical first-round scores of 1-over-par 73, while Butts and Mitchell both tallied marks of 2-over-par 74. Both Turner and Jasper finished tied for second place in the tournament, while Butts and Mitchell placed tied for seventh.
Stallings turned in a first-round tally of 79 in her first collegiate competition. She finished the tournament tied for 17th place.
This weekend, at the 2011 LPGA Xavier International, Campbell University claimed the championship title with an 18-hole total of 298. North Dakota State's Amy Anderson earned individual medalist honors with a 2-under-par 70.
The Samford University women's golf team will next be in action Oct. 24-25 as the Bulldogs continue their fall schedule with a trip to Germantown, Tenn., for the 2011 Memphis Tiger Invite. The two-day competition will be held at Ridgeway Country Club.
Britt and Duvernay Fire 70s as Mocs Finish 16th at Tar Heel Invite
Sophomores Jordan Britt and Marion Duvernay each carded -2 70s leading Chattanooga to low round of the season
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. --- Jordan Britt (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and Marion Duvernay (Publier, France) paced the Chattanooga Mocs to a season-best 293 (+5) in the final round of the Tar Heel Invitational on UNC Finley Golf Course. Britt and Duvernay each shot season-best two-under par 70s.
UTC shot 897 for the event finishing ahead of Coastal Carolina and Notre Dame and seven strokes behind Arkansas. The Mocs' 293 bettered yesterday's 297 as the squad's low round thus far.
"It was an OK performance over the last two days," said head coach Colette Murray. "We still have to get off to a better start. They're young and they're trying...we just have some things we need to figure out."
Britt shot one-under par over her last 36 holes to finish at five over, 221, tied for 34th. Duvernay was right behind her at one over for the past two rounds, ending up tied for 55th at 225 (+9).
Mette Kryger (Nivaa, Denmark) wound up tied for 37th with a 54-hole total of 222 (+6). Michaela Gasplmayr (Ebernfurth, Austria) and Yushira Budhram (Johannesburg, South Africa) rounded out the scoring at 230 and 236, respectively.
LSU won the team title at eight-under par 859 by four strokes over Alabama at 861 (-4). Auburn was third at three under (861), while host North Carolina was fourth at minus two (862).
Auburn's Marta Sanz won medalist honors at nine-under par 207. Chattanooga-native Brooke Pancake (Alabama), Augusta James (N.C. State) and Caroline Powers (Michigan State) tied for second at eight under (208).
