Spartans finish third at Starmount Fall Classic

GREENSBORO, N.C.-UNCG fired a final round 305 to finish third at the UNCG Starmount Fall Classic, Tuesday at Starmount Forest Country Club.

The Spartans finished three rounds at 917 (304-308-305), completing play 16 strokes behind tournament champion Maryland (901). The Terrapins shot a tournament-best 290 on Tuesday, winning by seven strokes over runner up East Tennessee State (908) in the 14-team tournament.

Georgia State's Charlotte Lorentzen earned individual medalist honors, shooting 74 during the third round to finish at 218 (75-69-74).

UNCG placed two golfers in the top 10. Freshman Fanny Cnops finished tied for sixth at 224 (72-74-78), and senior Ana Lucia Martinez tied for ninth after shooting 1-over par 72 on Tuesday to finish at 226 (79-75-72).

Junior Courtney Taylor tied for 19th at 231 (77-79-75), while freshman Berglind Bjornsdottir (78-81-80) and senior Begona Sarabia (77-80-82) tied for 37th at 239.

The Spartans resume play when they participate in the East Carolina Lady Pirate Intercollegiate, Oct. 10-11 in Greenville, N.C.

WCU Women's Golf Finishes 10th at Starmount Fall Classic
Blaire Minter leads squad, tied for 16th overall

Greensboro, N.C. - The Western Carolina women's golf team posted its best team round on the final day of competition, firing 315 on Tuesday to place 10th at the UNCG Starmount Fall Classic held at the par-71, 6,265-yard Starmount Country Club. Senior Blaire Minter slipped from the top 10 over her final nine holes, finishing tied for 16th to lead WCU at the event.

Starting on the back nine, Minter, who entered the final 18 holes tied for eighth-place, opened play with a birdie on the par-3 10th and played the first seven holes at one-under. But a bogey on the par-3 17th put her even at the turn. The Marietta, Ga., native stumbled through the finish, though, carding six bogies and one double-bogey countered with just three pars to shoot seven-over, 78.

Senior Rachel Nelson advanced 10 spots in the final standings to finish tied for 37th after shooting six-over, 77, on Tuesday while freshman Sofie Kvarnstrom matched her final round to jump 13 positions into a tie for 43rd overall. Nelson rallied back from a double-bogey on the 11th hole of her round, playing both nines at three-over par. Kvarnstrom overcame a double-bogey to open her round on the par-3, 10th, making the turn to the front nine at three-over. She played the final nine holes at three-over par.

Rounding out WCU's finishers was freshman Maria Kjelldorff in 57th at 247 and classmate Katy Kile in a tie for 58th at 248. Kjelldorff started one-under with a birdie on the par-4 11th, but recorded bogey-or-worse on 11 of the next 13 holes before scoring par on the final three of the round. Kile managed six-over par on both the front and back, countering a double-bogey on her second hole of the day with a birdie on No. 16.

Playing unattached as an individual, senior Christina Amoriello posted a three-round total of 280 to finish 74th overall.

First-round leader Maryland shot the only sub-300 round of the tournament to reclaim the top-spot on the team leader board and win the event by seven-strokes over runner-up, East Tennessee State, 901-to-908. Tournament host, UNCG, finished third at 917 followed by Campbell at 920 and a two-way tie between Furman and Georgia State for fifth at 921.

Southern Conference foes Elon and Wofford finished 12th and 14th, respectively.

Georgia State's Charlotte Lorentzen, who stormed up the charts to take a two-stroke lead after 36 holes on Monday, claimed the individual medalist honors after shooting three-over, 74, on Tuesday to win by three-strokes over Maryland's Juliet Vongphaumy, 218-to-221.

Western Carolina continues with the fall portion of its 2011-12 schedule next week when it travels to the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate, hosted by East Carolina at the Greenville Country Club. The 54-hole event features 36 holes on Monday, Oct. 10 and a single-round on Oct. 11. It is the first time since 2008 that WCU has played in the event, most recently finishing 11th with Minter - then a freshman - finishing 12th as an individual.

 

Furman's Rancourt Finishes Third At UNCG Starmount Fall Classic

Greensboro, N.C. -- Furman's Alexa Rancourt carded a final round 77 to earn a share of third place and help the Paladins to a fifth place finish on Tuesday in the UNC Greensboro Starmount Fall Classic at the par-71 Starmount Country Club.

The Paladins (306-306-309=921) finished in a tie for fifth place with Georgia State at 69-over par, 20 strokes behind tournament champion Maryland. East Tennessee State (+56) placed second with UNC Greensboro (+65) in third and Campbell (+68) in fourth place in the 14-team field.

Rancourt (+10), who led after Sunday's opening round 71, recorded just a single birdie to go with seven bogeys over the final 18 holes. The junior finished in a three-way tie for third place with Maryland's Jessie Hollandsworth and James Madison's Nicole Sakamoto five strokes behind individual medalist Charlotte Lorentzen (+5) of Georgia State.

Sophomore Inga Gunnarsdottir and junior Laura Wearn led the Paladins in the final round as each posted a three-over 74. Gunnarsdottir recorded one birdie and shot even par on the front nine to fashion her low round of the tournament, while Wearn birdied five holes in final round action to secure a share of 14th place.

The Furman women's golf team returns to action at the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate in Greenville, N.C., October 10-11.

Elon Women Finish 12th at UNCG Starmount Fall Classic

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Elon women's golf team concluded its second fall event on Tuesday, finishing 12th at the UNCG Starmount Fall Classic with a three-round score of 957 (320-317-320).

Elon's top finisher was Martyna Mierzwa who placed in a tie for 29th out of the 75 players in the field with a score of 236 (80-75-81). Mierzwa posted five birdies over her three rounds.

After shooting a 239 (81-78-80), Shannon Prunty placed in a tie for 37th. Virginia Mayer fired a 242 (78-83-81) to tie for 45th while Lauren Lebak placed in a tie for 54th with a mark of 245 (81-81-83).

Finally, Kristi Ingram posted her best round of the tournament on Tuesday, shooting a 78 over her final 18 holes. Ingram tied for 61st with a three-round mark of 250 (85-87-78).

Georgia State's Charlotte Lorentzen carded a 218 (75-69-74) to win medalist honors.

Maryland shot a tournament-low round of 290 on Tuesday to soar into the top spot on the team leaderboard. The Terps posted a final score of 901 (303-308-290) to take the team title. East Tennessee State (304-302-302--908) was second in the 14-team field while UNCG (304-308-305--917) was third. Campbell, ranked 44th in the country, placed fourth with a mark of 920 (313-305-302).

In a fifth-place tie with a score of 921 were Furman (306-306-309) and Georgia State (307-306-308).

The Phoenix edged out High Point (325-324-318--967) and Wofford (330-330-324--984).

Elon will next play in the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate on Oct. 10-11 in Greenville, N.C.

 

Women's Golf Wraps up Starmount Fall Classic

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Wofford women's golf team completed their second tournament with a 14th place finish at the UNCG Starmount Fall Classic with a team score of 984 over three rounds of play at the Starmount Country Club.

The Terriers, 330-330-324--984, finished 83 shots off of tournament winner Maryland.

Sarah Hurt paced the Terriers with a 77-85-80--242, while Anne Marie Covar finished with a 77-83-82--242. Alex Hendricks carded a 91-79-80--250, and Tarah Taylor completed the three rounds with a 90-83-82--255. Elizabeth Thompson rounded the the Terriers golfers with an 86-88-92--266.

Georgia State's Charlotte Lorentzen won the event with a 75-69-74--218 by three strokes.

The Terriers will head to the Wendy's Invitational on October 17 in Charleston, S.C. for their next tournament.
