Western Carolina Women's Golf Tied for 10th Entering Final Round at Starmount Fall Classic
Blaire Minter climbs leader board into tie for eighth after 36 holes

Greensboro, N.C. - Western Carolina slipped one spot in the standings on Monday after shooting 319 as a team to stand tied with Southern Conference foe, Elon, in 10th after 36 holes at the UNCG Starmount Fall Classic at the par-71, 6,265 Starmount Country Club. The Catamounts have a two-day total of 637.

WCU will once again be paired with golfers from Winthrop as well as Elon for Tuesday's final round, teeing off on the back nine beginning at 8:40 until 9:16 am. Fans can follow all of the action with live scoring online at www.GolfStatResults.com.

On the team leader board, East Tennessee State over-took first-round leader, Maryland, with a team 302 on Monday for a two-round total of 606 to lead the Terrapins by five-strokes. Furman and UNCG are tied for third at 612, six strokes off the pace, with Georgia State rounding out the top five at 613.

Georgia State's Charlotte Lorentzen posted the tournament's lowest round on Monday at two-under, 69, to storm up the ledger from seventh to take a two-stroke lead after 36 holes. Lorentzen leads the two-way tie of UNCG's Fanny Cnops and Furman's Alexa Rancourt entering the final round of play.

WCU senior Blaire Minter trimmed three strokes off her opening round to pace the Catamounts, advancing seven spots on the leader board into a two-way tie for eighth at 151, just seven strokes off the pace. The Marietta, Ga., native opened her round with back-to-back bogies to move to two-over, but then played the next nine holes even par before birdying the par-4 12th to move back to one-over for the round. Three bogies, a pair of pars and one birdie concluded her round at three-over, 74, for the day.

True freshman Maria Kjelldorff fought up-hill her entire round after posting a triple-bogey on the first hole, shooting one-stroke better than her opening round with an 80 on Monday to stand tied for 44th overall (161), a stroke ahead of senior teammate Rachel Nelson in a tie for 47th (162). Kjelldorff recorded a team-best three birdies on Monday, while Nelson posted consecutive birdies on the par-4 ninth and par-3 10th, but also had three holes of double-bogey or worse.

Freshmen Sofie Kvarnstrom and Katy Kile struggled with the course on Monday, carding 85 and 84, respectively. Kvarnstrom, who won her inaugural event two weeks ago at the Great Smokies Intercollegiate, is tied for 56th at 164 while Kile is a stroke in arrears at 165 and in 58th-place.

Playing unattached as an individual, WCU senior Christina Amoriello shot nine-strokes better on Monday, shooting 89 to stand in 74th overall.

The final round gets underway Tuesday morning and a complete recap will be available on Tuesday evening.

 

Furman, Rancourt Stay In Contention At UNCG Starmount Fall Classic

Greensboro, N.C. -- The Furman women's golf team climbed into a share of third place while Alexa Rancourt's second round 75 dropped her into a tie for second on Monday in the UNC Greensboro Starmount Fall Classic at the par-71 Starmount Country Club.

Furman fired a 22-over 306 for the second straight round to move into a tie with host UNC Greensboro for third place, just six stroke behind tournament leader East Tennessee State (+38). The University of Maryland (+43) holds second place, five strokes behind the Buccaneers.

Rancourt (+4), who held the lead after 18 holes following a first round 71, shot two-over on both the front and back nine to fall into a tie with UNCG's Fanny Cnops (+4). The pair trail Georgia State's Charlotte Lorentzen (+2) by two strokes entering Wednesday's final round.

Senior Liz Wendt (+12) and junior Laura Wearn (+12) share 16th place after shooting 78 and 77 in the second round, respectively.

Final round action in the 54-hole tournament is set to begin Wednesday morning.

Spartans slip to third during second round of Starmount Fall Classic

GREENSBORO, N.C.-UNCG shot a second-round 308 and slipped into a tie for third at the Starmount Fall Classic, Monday at Starmount Forrest Country Club.

The Spartans shot 612 (304-308) during the first two rounds and are tied with Southern Conference rival Furman. East Tennessee State leads the 14-team tournament at 606. Maryland is second at 611, followed by UNCG and Furman. Georgia State (613), Campbell (618), James Madison (622), Charleston Southern (632), Gardner-Webb (634), and Western Carolina and Elon (t-637) make up the rest of the top 10.

Georgia State's Charlotte Lorenzen shot a tournament-low 69 during the second round and leads the tournament at 2-over par 144.

UNCG freshman Fanny Cnops endured and up-and-down day but still managed to card a 74. Cnops broke her driver on the first hole, and shot five-over par on the back nine but finished with a birdie on 18 to stay in contention. Cnops is tied for second at 146 (72-74).

Ana Lucia Martinez is tied for 16th overall for the Spartans after a 75 left her at 154. Courtney Taylor carded a 79 and is tied for 24th at 156.

Begona Sarabia is tied for 29th at 157 (77-80), while Berglind Bjornsdottir is tied for 37th at 159 (78-81).

The third and final round is Tuesday, with tee times beginning at 8:30 a.m. There is no admission charge for spectators.

 

Mierzwa Leads Elon on Day Two of UNCG Starmount Classic

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Martyna Mierzwa knocked five strokes off of her first round score as she fired a second round 75 to help the Elon women's golf team to a tie for 10th after two rounds of the UNCG Starmount Classic on Tuesday. The Phoenix finished the day with a two-round score of 637 (320-317).

Mierzwa's performance helped her climb to a tie for 20th individually with a total score of 155 (80-75). During Monday's second round, the junior posted birdies on both hole number seven and hole number nine giving her three over her 36 holes.

Shannon Prunty climbed from a tie for 41st into a tie for 37th in the 75-player field with a two-day mark of 159 (81-78). Virginia Mayer slipped into a tie for 44th after finishing the second round with a tournament score of 161 (78-83).

In a tie for 47th is Lauren Lebak who carded her second consecutive round of 81 for a two-day mark of 162. Kristi Ingram rounds out the field for Elon. Ingram will enter Tuesday's final round in 68th position with a score of 172 (85-87).

Georgia State's Charlotte Lorentzen went two-under on Tuesday to assume the individual lead. She has a two-round score of 144 (75-69).

East Tennessee State took over the top spot on the team leaderboard with a mark of 606 (304-302). The Bucs hold a five-stroke advantage over Maryland (303-308--611) entering Tuesday's final round at the Starmount Country Club. Host UNCG (304-308--612) and fellow SoCon rival Furman (306-306--612) are tied for third with Georgia State (307-306--613) sitting fifth. Campbell, the 44th-ranked team in the nation, is sixth with a score of 618 (313-305).

The Phoenix is tied for 10th in the 14-team field with league mate Western Carolina (318-319--637). Elon also leads fellow SoCon program Wofford. The Terriers are in 14th with a score of 660 (330-330).
