SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Citadel sophomore forward Vanessa Aponte has been selected as the Southern Conference women's soccer player of the week for all matches on October 26.
In the Bulldogs' final regular season game and with a potential SoCon Tournament berth on the line, Aponte twice rallied The Citadel with goals in an eventual 3-2 upset of crosstown rival College of Charleston.
After falling behind 1-0 early, Aponte knotted the score before the break with a shot off a deflection.
Finding itself trailing 2-1 with just 13 minutes remaining, The Citadel again turned to Aponte whose unassisted tally, her team-leading eighth on the year, gave the Bulldogs hope once again.
The Citadel would complete its comeback with a Mariana Garcia score in the 83rd minute to claim a 3-2 victory, but the Bulldogs were eliminated from tournament contention later that night when Western Carolina defeated Appalachian State.
Other Nominees: Sydney Hill (Appalachian State), Rachael Newmister (Davidson), Kate Murphy (Elon), Rachel Shelnutt (Furman), Michelle Moll (Samford), Becca Smith (Chattanooga) and Christine Kaznowski (Western Carolina).
