SPARTANBURG,
S.C.
– Members of the Southern Conference media selected Chattanooga as the
preseason favorite to win the SoCon women’s basketball regular season title in 2011-12,
mirroring the decision made by the league coaches on Thursday.
Chattanooga received 12 of
22 first-place votes and 228 total points. Appalachian State received eight
first-place votes and a total of 221 points to finish second in the poll. The Mountaineers
won the regular season title last year.
The 2011 SoCon Tournament
Champion Samford Bulldogs came in third with one first-place vote and a total
of 191 points.
Elon (170) was selected to
finish fourth in the league, followed by Furman (133), which received the last
first-place vote. Davidson (132) came in sixth, while Georgia Southern (110)
was picked seventh and UNCG (95) was selected to finish eighth.
College of Charleston (78),
Western Carolina (63) and Wofford (31) round out the poll.
The Southern Conference
women’s basketball season begins Friday, November 11 with ten teams hitting the
hardwood. The 2012 Southern Conference Tournament will be held March 2-5 in
Asheville, N.C.
