Women's Golf Finishes Fourth in Charleston
CHARLESTON, S.C. - Appalachian State University women's golf carved nine strokes off its first round score on Tuesday to jump from eighth place to fourth at the Charleston Southern Wendy's Invitational. The Mountaineers carded a 311-302=613 (+45) at par-71 Coosaw Creek.
Rumbidzai Masamvu (Harare, Zimbabwe/Dominican Convent) slipped into a tie for third place at the event after holding the lead through 18 holes. The junior carded a 70-76=146 (+4) to nail down her best finish of the season.
A pair of Apps tied for 18th place as Lauren Smith (Salisbury, N.C./UNCG) carded a 78-75=153 (+9) and Yue Xu (Beijing, China/HuiJia Private School) matched her with rounds of 79 and 74.
Elena Thomas (Waxahachie, Texas/Waxahachie) tied for 54th with an 85-77=162 (+20) and Mimi Burke (Mooresville, N.C./Cannon School) placed 63rd at 81-81=165 (+23).
Competing as an individual, Samantha Patton (Morganton, N.C./Mars Hill) shot a 92-97=189 (+47) to finish 83rd.
Marshall won the tournament with a 605 (+37), five strokes ahead of second-place UAB and Stetson. Marshall's Allison Harper and Jacksonville's Natalie Schmett tied for the individual medal, three strokes ahead of Masamvu.
Also competing from the Southern Conference, Wofford placed fifth, two strokes back of the Apps and The Citadel placed 15th with a 660 (+92).
ASU closes out the fall season on Oct. 28-30 at Furman's Lady Paladin Invitational in Greenville, S.C.
Terriers Finish Fifth at CSU Wendy's Invitational
CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Wofford women's golf team finished in fifth place with a score of 615 at the CSU Wendy's Invitational over the par-71 Coosaw Creek Country Club Monday and Tuesday mornings.
Wofford finished in fifth just two strokes behind Appalachian State (613) in fourth and five strokes behind Stetson and UAB (610), who finished tied for second. Marshall took the tournament's top spot with a 605.
Sarah Hurt led the Terriers with a 75-75--150 putting her in a tie for tenth place. Anne Marie Covar followed with a 76-76--152 for a tie for 15th place., while Tarah Taylor tied for 30th with a 79-77-156. Lauren Dunbar tied for 34th after shooting an 80-77-157, and Shelby Winters carded an 88-85--173 to finish in a tie for 75th.
Wofford will wrap up their fall schedule on November 28th with the Lady Paladin Invitational host by Furman.
Pellegrini, Keith Finish Strong at Wendy's Invitational
Charleston, S.C. - The Citadel Golf team shot a final round of 329 to finish 15th at the Wendy's Invitational held at the Coosaw Creek Country Club in North Charleston. The Bulldogs fired a second round 321, improving by two strokes on an opening round 331, led by Alanna-Jean Keith (78) and Erica Pellegrini (79).
Pellegrini was The Citadel's top finisher, tying for 41st place after posting a two-day score of 159 (80-79), followed closely by Jean Keith's 161 (83-78).
Rounding out Citadel individuals were Bree Baumgartner (83-80-163), Kellie Anderson (85-92-177) and TaKima Butler (87-92-179), who placed among the top 100 players in the field.
Marshall earned the team crown with a two-day score of +37 (299-306-602), followed by UAB (301-309-610) and Stetson (310-300-610), who finished the tournament tied for second with a +42. The Thundering Herd's Allison Harper shared the individual crown with Jacksonville University's Natalie Schmett, who each hit a respective +1 (71-72-143).
