Mountaineers-Cougars Tie; Elon, Furman Down ACC Foes

Appalachian State 0, College of Charleston 0 (2 OT)

BOONE, N.C. - For the third time in four matches, the College of Charleston men's soccer team required overtime in its ultimately-scoreless draw with Southern Conference-leading Appalachian State at the Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex on Tuesday night.

The Cougars move to 5-5-4 (1-1-2 SoCon) with the result. Appalachian State (8-2-3, 3-0-1 SoCon) remains unbeaten in league play and extends its unbeaten streak to ten matches.

The windy and rainy mountain weather combined with ASU's six-ranked defense in the country kept the Cougars out of the back of the net for only the third time this season. The two previous occasions ended as 0-0 draws as well.

The best chance of the night came in the second overtime when Francis Twohig (St. Simon's Island, Ga.) found himself one-on-one with Mountaineer keeper Danny Free. Twohig beat the keeper but his glancing shot struck the post and unfortunately bounced harmlessly away from goal.

CofC keeper Kees Heemskerk (Zaandam, Holland) made four saves en route to the 110-minute shut out effort.

The Cougars were narrowly outshot, 15-11, led by Sean de Silva's (Port of Spain, Trinidad) five attempts at goal. Both teams put four attempts on frame.

CofC remains in conference play to host UNC Greensboro at Saturday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. at Patriots Point. With a win, the Cougars will jump the Spartans in the SoCon standings and take over fourth place. The top four teams in the league host in the opening round of the SoCon Championships.

#23 Furman 3, Clemson 2

Greenville, S.C. -- Daniel Hojaij assisted on a pair of goals and 23rd-ranked Furman held off a late Clemson rally to down the Tigers, 3-2, on Tuesday evening at Historic Riggs Field.

The win, Furman's second in a row in Clemson, improved the Paladins to 11-2-3 overall while the Tigers slipped to 4-8-0 on the season.

"It's great to get a quality win against an ACC team on the road," said Furman head coach Doug Allison. "We were able to build a lead and show composure in the back to hold on late in the match."

Furman opened the scoring at the 19:13 mark when Martin Ontiveros found space on the left side and played a cross into the middle of the box that a charging Coleton Henning headed inside the near post for his seventh goal of the season.

Austin Savage provided and immediate answer for the Clemson Tigers at 19:52. Keegan Priest delivered a corner kick into the box that was deflected to the near post by a defender before Savage finished at the back post for his fourth tally of the season.

The Paladins regained the lead at the 29:18 mark on the third goal of the season from Alex Crooks. Hojaij ran onto a loose ball at midfield and dribbled to the top of the box before sliding a pass to Crooks on the left side. The Alpharetta, Ga., native fired a low shot off of the Tiger keeper that trickled into the empty net to give Furman a 2-1 lead.

Hojaij set up the deciding goal at the 76:09 mark dribbling down the middle of the field and lofting a ball into the path of Josh Lietch who won the race to the ball and chipped a shot over a sliding Cody Mizell for his first collegiate goal.

Clemson pulled a goal back with 7:08 left in regulation on a Bryniar Benediktsson 10-yard strike, but Alec Kann and the Paladin defense held Clemson without another shot on goal to preserve the victory. Kann totaled four saves, three in the second half, to earn the victory on goal. Mizell notched three saves for the Tigers.

Furman managed a 12-7 edge in shots with each team recording six shots on goal and four corner kicks.

The Paladins return to Southern Conference play on Saturday night when they travel to Boone, N.C., to face Appalachian State. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

Elon 2, Wake Forest 0

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Two first-half goals and a strong defensive effort led the Elon men's soccer team to a 2-0 shutout against Atlantic Coast Conference foe Wake Forest at Spry Stadium in wet weather on Tuesday night. The victory is Elon's first-ever over the Demon Deacons during its Division I era and first against Wake Forest (6-6-2) since 1979.

Elon (5-8-1) has now posted back-to-back shutouts against ACC teams, having defeated the Clemson Tigers, 1-0, last week.

"I thought the team played very well tonight," Elon head coach Darren Powell said. "We defended well throughout the game against a very talented Wake Forest team. I thought we executed in key moments to get two good goals and we hope to keep on improving for the rest of the year. We look forward to getting back to Southern Conference action in front of a homecoming crowd on Friday night."

As has been the case in its last few matches, the Phoenix got on the board early in the contest. In the 14th minute, Matt Wescoe got his first goal of the year, a header that proved the game-winner. Senior co-captain James Carroll lofted the ball in the box where Wescoe finished for the 1-0 Elon advantage. The assist was Carroll's second of the season.

Elon added to its lead in the 37th minute when junior midfielder Gabe Latigue chased down a ball from Daniel Lovitz. On the breakaway, Latigue beat Wake keeper Michael Lisch and came through with a sliding finish on his second score of the season.

The Phoenix defense was solid for the entire 90 minutes and goalie Reed Dillard came up with four big saves, including two impressive first-half stops on shots by WFU forward Sean Okoli, to fend off the Wake Forest attack. The shutout was Dillard's second of the year. Lisch collected three saves for the home team.

Wake held the 17-13 advantage in the shot column and the 6-4 edge in corner kicks.

Elon will get back into Southern Conference action as the Phoenix kicks off Elon's Homecoming festivities with a 6 p.m. bout against Georgia Southern on Friday night at Rudd Field.

#20 Coastal Carolina 2, Wofford 1

SPARTANBURG, S.C - Two first half goals by Coastal Carolina and a steady rain did not play in favor of the Wofford men's soccer team Tuesday evening, as the Terriers took a 2-1 loss from the 19th-ranked Chanticleers at Snyder Field. With the loss, Wofford drops to 4-9-1 overall on the season.

Coastal Carolina posted the first score in the 28th minute of play as Ricky Garbanzo sent a shot from eight yards out into the right side of the net past Wofford goalkeeper Andrew Drennan. Cyprian Hedrick was credited with the assist.

A foul in the 18-yard box by Forrest Lasso in the 38th minute set up a penalty kick by Ashton Bennett, who was able to convert, giving the Chanticleers a 2-0 lead.

In the 70th minute of action, a yellow card was presented to Coastal Carolina goalkeeper Scott Angevine, who came out of goal in attempt to prevent a shot by Wofford's Matt Frongello. The Terriers were awarded a penalty kick, which was successfully taken by Alex Hutchins, cutting the Chanticleers' lead to 2-1.

The Terriers had a handful of attempts to score the game-tying goal in the final minutes of action, as Carlos Dominguez Gonzalez was able to break free from CCU defenders in the 74th minute, but his shot attempt sailed wide right of the goal. Dominguez Gonzalez also nearly headed the ball in during the final seconds of play, but the ball went just over the crossbar.

Wofford will begin a three-match road swing this Saturday evening, returning to Southern Conference action to take on Davidson. The match is scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. start time.
