Masamvu Tied Atop Leaderboard at CSU Wendy's Invitational

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Junior Rumbidzai Masamvu (Harare, Zimbabwe/Dominican Convent) carded a one-under-par 70 on Monday to tie for first place at the Charleston Southern Wendy's Invitational heading into Tuesday's final round. Appalachian State University women's golf ranks eighth at 312 (+28), just two strokes out of a tie for fourth place.

Masamvu sank five birdies in the round and is tied with Marshall's Allison Harper for the lead and the pair is just one stroke ahead of third-place golfer Natalie Schmett from Jacksonville.

Fresh off of her tournament win at Winthrop, Lauren Smith (Salisbury, N.C./UNCG) carded a 78 (+7) to tie in 26th place through 18 holes, while Yue Xu (Beijing, China/HuiJia Private School) is just one stroke back in 32nd.

Mimi Burke (Mooresville, N.C./Cannon School) stands tied for 63rd place with an 84 (+13) and freshman Elena Thomas (Waxahachie, Texas/Waxahachie) shot an 85 (+14) in Monday's opening round to tie for 67th.

Competing as an individual, Samantha Patton (Morganton, N.C./Mars Hill) fired a 92 (+21) to end the day in 85th place.

The Thundering Herd combined for a 299 (+15) to take the team lead, two strokes ahead of UAB.

Southern Conference rival Wofford is one of four teams tied in fourth place at 310 (+26), within striking distance for the Apps on Tuesday.

Host Charleston Southern stands 11th at 319 (+35) and also representing the SoCon, The Citadel is 16th at 331 (+47) through 18 holes.

Tuesday's second and final round has been moved up to a 7:30 a.m. start time due to concerns of impending inclement weather.

 


Five Bulldogs Card 80's in Opening Round of Wendy's Invitational

Charleston, S.C. - Erica Pellegrini, who carded an 80, led five members of The Citadel Golf team that wrapped up Monday's opening round of Wendy's Invitational with a combined team score of 331.

Pellegrini (+9) is locked in a five-way tie for 44th, alongside fellow SoCon competitor Lauren Dunbar (Wofford College) at the Coosaw Creek Country Club. Bulldog teammates Bree Baumgartner and Devin Lowe, who each shot 83 (+12) on the first day of action, placed themselves in a tie for 56th. The freshmen duo of Kellie Anderson (85; +14) and Takima Butler (87; +16) rounded out the remaining Citadel scores.

Marshall (299), out of Conference USA, holds a two-stroke edge over UAB at the close of round one. The Thundering Herd's Allison Harper is tied alongside Rumbidzai Masamvu (Appalachian State) in the individual competition, with each firing an opening round 70 (-1). Jacksonville University's Natalie Schmett is currently in third, one shot back following an even par 71, on a very crowded leaderboard.

Terriers Tied for Fourth after Opening Round of CSU Wendy's Invitational

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Wofford women's golf team fired a team score of 310 and sits tied for fourth at the CSU Wendy's Invitational over the par-71 Coosaw Creek Country Club Monday morning.

Wofford is tied for fourth with Bucknell, Stetson and Radford, while Marshall (299), UAB (301) and Gardner-Webb (307) occupy the top three spots after the opening round of play.

Sarah Hurt led the Terriers with a 75 putting her tied for tenth place. Anne Marie Covar followed with a 76 for a tie for 18, while Tarah Taylor is tied for 32nd with a 79. Lauren Dunbar is tied for 44th after shooting an 80, and Shelby Winters carded an 88 and is tied for 81st for Wofford.

Wofford will wrap up the tournament Tuesday morning at 7:30 a.m. The early start time is due to expected inclement weather in the area.
