ELON, N.C. - Behind 12 kills each from Hannah Nelson and Bethany Sanford the Georgia Southern Volleyball team (13-11, 5-3) bounced back from Saturday's loss with a 3-1 win over Elon (14-9, 3-5) Sunday afternoon. The Eagles had four players with 10 or more kills and won the match 25-23, 25-16, 21-25, 25-19 over the Phoenix.

Parker Small and Enjoli Johnson added 11 and 10 kills respectively to GSU's offensive effort. The Eagles hit .233 as a team in the match and tallied five service aces. Georgia Southern hit over .300 only once all match but it came when it counted in set four. GSU tallied a .366 hitting percentage to close out the match with a close 25-19 set four victory.

The Eagles' defense held Elon below .200 in the first two sets and allowed a .168 mark for the match. Moriah Bellissimo led the team with 22 digs, while Sanford added 20 digs on the defensive end. The Phoenix got the offense going in the final two sets and hit .250 and .278 in sets three and four respectively.

Georgia Southern led 19-13 late in the first set, but Elon rallied to pull within two points, 22-20. A Phoenix attack error and a kill be Sanford put the Eagles within a point of the first-set victory, but it would be three Elon points later before Johnson tallied the set-winning kill.

GSU jumped ahead 2-0 in the match and had an opportunity for the three-set sweep late in set three but a pair of errors ended the chance. The two teams were tied at 18-18 before the Phoenix rattled off two-straight points. The Eagles fought back to within one point twice but a kill by Chanelle Smith and two Georgia Southern errors ended the point.

The Eagles led by as many as seven points in the fourth set, 20-13, but had to fight off a Elon team that pulled to within four points, 22-18. Georgia Southern used two kills and a pair of Phoenix error to win the match and to prevent Elon from forcing a fifth set.

Appalachian State 3, Wofford 0

BOONE, N.C. -  The Wofford volleyball completed a three-match road trip with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-13, 25-15) loss at the hands of Appalachian State Sunday afternoon in the Holmes Center in a Southern Conference match.

In the opening set, the Mountaineers got off to an early 4-1 lead highlighted by two kills and a service ace.   App State maintained a narrow lead; until Wofford used a 5-0 run to take a 12-10 lead highlighted by a Rachel Woodlee kill and two service aces from Kelsey Bagwell.   The Mountaineers rallied with a 3-0 run to take a 13-12 lead only to have Wofford tie the set at 13 on a Wendy Burnett kill.  App State pushed two points to take a 15-13 only to see the Terriers battle and tie the set at 15 on an Amanda Liguori kill and a Mountaineer attack error.  With the set tied at 15, App State mounted a 5-0 run to pull ahead 20-15 on three kills and a Terrier attack error, but a block by Baird and Arden Anderson halted the run.   With back-to-back blocks, Woodlee and Anderson and a solo block by Woodlee, Wofford cut the lead to 20-18, and would pull within one, 21-20.  However, the Terriers dropped four of the final six points to fall 25-22.

App State opened the second set with a 4-0 run before a Lucy Reser kill put Wofford on the scoreboard.  Another Reser kill and a block by Burnett and Woodlee helped pull the Terriers within 6-4, but the Mountaineers used an 8-1 run to take a 14-5 lead, before an Anderson broke the run with a kill.  App State took control of the set as they pulled ahead 17-6 en route to a 25-13 set two win.

The two teams traded the opening six points in the third set, before App State pulled ahead with three kills to take a 6-3 lead.  Wofford cut the lead to 7-6 on kills from Baird and Liguori, but App maintained control of the set as they rallied back with a 5-1 run to take a 12-7 lead.  The Terriers made a 2-0 run on a Bekah Dorsey kill and a block by Reser and Burnett, but the Mountaineers used back-to-back kills to regain a five-point lead, 14-9.  App pulled ahead 16-10 with a service ace, and extended their lead to as high as nine points, 21-12, as they took the set, 25-15 and clinched the match.

Reagan Styles continued her double-digit-dig streak as she collected ten digs.  She has now picked up ten plus digs in 16 straight matches and 20 of the team's 24 matches this season.  Baird, who had six kills, led Wofford offensively, and Liguori and Anderson followed with four kills.  Tara Gough and Dorsey handed out eight assists and six assists respectively.  Reser had a team-high five block assists, and Woodlee added four total blocks, two solo and two block assists.

Wofford was outhit in the match .000 to .233, but held a 10-7 advantage in blocks.  App State had 19 more kills, 41-22, on only one more attempt than the Terriers, 103-102. 

Wofford (13-11, 2-6) has dropped its last eight straight to App State and hasn't won in Boone since 2001.

Chattanooga 3, The Citadel 0

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - For the second time in as many days, outside hitter Rachael Farrell led The Citadel Volleyball team in kills, this time finishing with eight, but it was Chattanooga that earned the victory over the Bulldogs by scores of 25-19, 25-23, 25-23 on Sunday afternoon.

Farrell converted the eight kills on 20 attempts, while limiting herself to one error, to finish with a .350 hitting percentage. She was surrounded by five players who finished with four or more kills, including Ise d'Angelo, Alexa Dahlstrom and Jessica Maxwell, who tallied five apiece. The defensive prowess of Farrell provided the Bulldogs with a team-high 11 digs. Teammates Amanda Rudnik and Kaona Mercer each contributed five digs. Dahlstrom was also a force on both sides of the ball, adding six assisted blocks to go along with 20 assists. The Citadel fell to 7-14 overall and 0-8 in SoCon action.

The host Mocs (5-17, 3-5 SoCon) were paced by a 19-kill outing of Christina Teter. Teter committed just two errors in 29 total attacks, capping off a .586 attack percentage. Joining Teter on the front row were Jennifer Kuroski (nine kills), Heather Parman (seven kills) and Kasey Talley (seven kills). The defense was highlighted by Paula Passmore's 12 digs, while Bridget Camacho contributed 38 assists and nine digs.

The Citadel took advantage of a d'Angelo kill and three subsequent attack errors by UTC to assume an early 5-2 lead. The Mocs drew even at 5-5, the first of six ties, as the teams battled through a combined 11 errors to reach an eventual 13-13 score. Following a timeout, Chattanooga got a series of kills by Teter and Talley to stretch its lead to 16-13, before Dahlstrom answered with a kill and a service ace to slice the lead to one. Teter drove a kill past the Dogs defense, allowing Andrea Johnson's service game to score the next seven unanswered points for a 24-17 lead. Chattanooga closed out the first game with a 25-19 win.

UTC carried that momentum into the early stages of the second set, opening a 14-7 lead that forced a Citadel timeout. The Bulldogs responded with three straight kills by Dahlstrom, Mercer and Rudnik to pull within four, 14-10. Three kills from Dahlstrom, among the next eight Citadel points, trimmed the Mocs advantage to 21-18. The Bulldogs eventually drew even at 21-21, following a pair of kills by Mercer and Rudnik, before three strikes by Teter proved to be the difference in the 25-23 victory.

Chattanooga streaked out to an early 7-3 lead in the third set behind kills from Teter, Camacho and Kuroski, forcing a Citadel timeout. The Bulldogs responded to the challenge with kills from d'Angelo and Maxwell to tie the game at 10-10. With d'Angelo in serve The Citadel forced three consecutive attack errors to take a 12-10 lead, before the set reached a 13-13 tie. The service games of Johnson, Parman and Passmore, which combined for nine of the next 10 Moc points, provided Chattanooga with a 23-16 cushion. With Farrell in serve the Cadets scored six points, including two off kills by d'Angelo, to draw within one of a tie, 23-22. But, kills by Kuroski and Talley completed the sweep, 25-23.

Furman 3, Western Carolina 1  

CULLOWHEE, N.C.  - Senior Christina Curry hit .500 with 12 kills as the Furman volleyball team rebounded for a 3-1 (17-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-18) win over Western Carolina Sunday afternoon at the Ramsey Center in Cullowhee, N.C.

The Catamounts jumped out to an early 7-2 lead to open the first set.  Following a Paladin timeout, Furman cut the lead two 7-2, but Western Carolina answered with a 6-0 run to push the advantage to 13-4.  Later in the match the Paladins went on a 6-1 run of their own to slice the lead to 22-16, but Western Carolina managed to hang on for a 25-17 set victory.

The Paladins came alive in the second set, quickly amassing a 9-2 lead then pushing the advantage to 15-8.  Western Carolina came within one point at 19-18, but three consecutive Catamount errors gave the Furman a 22-18 lead.  Following a Western Carolina kill, the Paladins put together three-consecutive points to end the set and take a 25-19 win.

Following the break, the Paladins put together a 10-3 run to open the third set and eventually led 17-6.  Western Carolina went on a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 17-13, before Furman went on a 5-2 run later in the match to lead 24-18.  Following two Catamount points, a Western Carolina service error gave the Paladins the 20-25 victory.

Again in the fourth set, Furman jumped out to an early 9-3 lead and took control of the set.  Western Carolina came within three points at 19-16, but a 7-2 run by the Paladins gave Furman a 25-18 win to end the match.

Junior Natalie Braun recorded a triple-double for the Paladins with 10 kills, 26 assists, and 20 digs, while senior Kelly Kirby added a double-double with 11 assists and 19 digs.  Senior Carolyn Nicoletti tallied 20 digs in the match-up.

Western Carolina (9-15, 4-4 SoCon) was led by Caitlin Piechota, who notched 11 kills.  Brittany Lysik added a double-double with 32 assists and 14 digs, while Morgan Chochran paced the Catamount defense with 25 digs.
