SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Wofford men's soccer team fell to UNC Greensboro by a 4-0 score Saturday night at Snyder Field. The loss drops the Terriers to 4-8-1 overall and 0-4-0 in Southern Conference play.
The Spartans got on the board first in the 14th minute when Austin Miller drove the ball up the left side of the field, crossing the ball to Brian Graham to the right side of the 18-yard box, where Graham sends a shot past the reach of Wofford keeper Ben Limbaugh.
UNCG scored once more in the first half, as Austin Miller headed the ball into the net from six yards out following a crossing pass from Oddur Gudmundsson in the 25th minute.
Miller scored once again in the 77th minute of play, taking a shot from eight yards out, placing the ball into the upper left corner of the goal, out of the reach of Wofford keeper Andrew Drennan, who played the second half in goal.
The final goal of the evening for UNCG took place in the 80th minute when Hakan Ilhan collected the rebound of a shot by Brian Graham that deflected off the right goalpost, putting the ball into the top left corner.
The Terriers had a handful of scoring opportunities throughout the match, as Forrest Lasso, Chase West, and Alex Hutchins each had shots on goal, but were unable to send the ball past UNCG keeper Peyton Ford.
Wofford will return to action this Tuesday evening, stepping out of SoCon play to host #20 Coastal Carolina. The match is slated for a 6:00 p.m. start time at Snyder Field.
No. 26 Furman 3, Elon 1
Greenville, S.C. -- Furman bagged three unanswered goals to rally from an early 1-0 deficit and down Elon, 3-1, in Southern Conference men's soccer action on Saturday evening at Stone Soccer Stadium.
The victory improved the Paladins, ranked No. 19 in the Fox Soccer NCAA Top 25 and No. 26 in the latest College Soccer News Top 30, to 10-2-3 overall and 2-1-1 in SoCon play. Elon slipped to 4-8-1 on the season and 1-3-0 inside the conference.
"It was great to get win tonight in front of a good crowd considering our students are on Fall Break," said Paladin head coach Doug Allison. "We scored three very nice goals and Alec Kann did an outstanding job of keeping us in the game early."
Elon stunned the Paladin crowd by grabbing a 1-0 lead just 1:11 into the match on Chris Thomas' fifth goal of the season. The senior ran onto a long ball and fired a shot that Kann pushed wide, but Thomas tracked down the ball deep in the right side of the box and squeezed a shot into the open net to put the Phoenix in front.
From that point on, Furman would dominate possession for the remainder of the first half, and the Paladins found an equalizer at 33:28. Sophomore Michael Gandier placed a pass in the path of a charging Coleton Henning who hammered a 21-yard shot across the face of goal to the right corner to knot the match at 1-1.
Gandier put the Paladins in front with his second goal of the season at the 43:58 mark. Walker Zimmerman headed a Martin Ontiveros corner kick towards the far post and Amadu Ndiaye fired the ball back across the face of goal before Gandier deposited the ball into the top netting to put Furman in front 2-1.
The Phoenix were reduced to 10 men just 1:53 into the second half when Jahan Threeths was send off for a studs-up challenge on Kann in the box. Furman made the most of the man advantage as Henning delivered a long ball to spring Nikolai Hammer free behind the Elon defense. The freshman, racing down the left side, slotted a shot past Elon keeper Nathan Dean and into the far right corner at 61:16 to cap the scoring and give the Paladins a 3-1 cushion.
Furman outshot the Phoenix 17-5 and earned 10 corner kicks while surrendering only three to Elon. Kann earned the victory in net with two saves, while Dean stopped four shots for the Phoenix.
The Paladins open a three-match road trip on Tuesday night when they travel to Historic Riggs Field to face the Clemson Tigers. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
Longwood 2, Davidson 0
DAVIDSON, N.C. - A goal by Zach Crandall in the 13th minute proved to be the difference as Longwood earned a 2-0 victory over Davidson in non-conference men's soccer action Saturday night at Alumni Stadium.
Shots were even in the second half as Davidson (5-6-2, 1-1-1 SoCon) generated more offensive pressure, but the Wildcats were unable to crack the Longwood (7-6-1, 0-2 Atlantic Soccer Conference) defense.
Crandall found his way past Davidson's central defenders early in the first half to score what proved to be the game-winning goal. Nick Surkamp iced the win with 15 seconds remaining with a goal from just inside the 18-yard box.
Davidson's best chance to score came midway through the second half when sophomore forward Chris Pettigilio was able to steal the ball from goalkeeper Joel Helmick outside the 18-yard box. Pettigllio was on the right flank and had a tough angle on goal, allowing a Longwood defender to get back and save Pettigilio's long-range shot.
Helmick made one save, while senior goalkeeper Chip Sanders made five saves for Davidson.
The Wildcats return to action Monday night at 7 p.m., hosting No. 2 North Carolina in Alumni Stadium.
