UNCG Leads SoCon Teams, Furman's Wearn Grabs Second

Women's golf finishes fourth at Lady Pirate Intercollegiate

GREENVILLE, N.C.-UNCG shot a final round 305 to finish fourth at the East Carolina Lady Pirate Intercollegiate, Tuesday at Greenville Country Club.

Despite struggling during the last of the tournament's three rounds, the Spartans still managed to finish with a 54-hole school record score of 890 (292-291-305). Maryland captured team honors in the 20-team field by finishing at 879, followed by Georgia State (882) and East Carolina (887).

Freshman Fanny Cnops completed play as UNCG's top finisher, coming in 10th at 218 (69-70-79). Cnops entered the final round as the individual leader but carded three bogeys, a double bogey and a triple bogey on Tuesday. Still, her overall effort earned her a third consecutive top 10 finish.

Old Dominion's Samantha Morrell (-4) was the individual medalist.

For UNCG, Ana Lucia Martinez finished tied for 20th at 223 (74-72-77), while Begona Sarabia completed play tied for 23rd at 224 (73-74-77).

Courtney Taylor tied for 41st at 229 (78-75-76), and Berglind Bjornsdottir's team-best 75 on Tuesday helped her finished tied for 62nd at 234 (82-77-75).

The Spartans close out their 2011 fall schedule at the Palmetto Intercollegiate, Oct. 23-24 at Kiawah Island Resort.

 

Wearn Settles For Second Place, Furman Eighth, At Lady Pirate Intercollegiate

Greenville, N.C. -- Junior Laura Wearn (-3) posted a one-over par 73 to finish in a four-way tie for second place and help Furman to a share of eighth place on Tuesday in the final round of the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate at the par-72 Greenville Country Club.

Wearn (71-69-73=213), a Charlotte, N.C., native, birdied two of her final five holes to pull into a tie for the lead, but Old Dominion's Samantha Morrell (-4) birdied her final hole to break a five-way tie and claim individual medalist honors. Wearn, who birdied four holes on Tuesday, shared second place with Laverry Kumar of UNC Wilmington, Amy Otteson of East Carolina and Juliet Vongphaumy of Maryland.

The Terps (+15) carded a three-over 291 on Tuesday to claim the tournament title and finish three strokes clear of second place Georgia State (+18) while host East Carolina (+23) placed third. UNC Greensboro, UNC Wilmington and East Tennessee State rounded out the top six finishers in the 20-team field. Yale placed seventh and Furman (+42), which shot 312 over the final 18 holes, shared eighth place with James Madison.

Senior Liz Wendt (+10) notched the second best finish for the Paladins claiming a share of 28th. She shot a final round 78.

Furman returns to action and caps its fall schedule October 28-30, when it hosts the annual Lady Paladin Invitational at the Furman University Golf Club.

WCU Women's Golf Finishes 12th at Lady Pirate Intercollegiate
Sofie Kvarnstrom leads WCU, Rachel Nelson rallies 26 positions on final day

Greenville, N.C. - Western Carolina posted a final round score of 306 Tuesday to slip into 12th-place in the final standings at the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate hosted by East Carolina at the par-72, 5,980-yard Greenville Country Club. WCU finished just five strokes out of seventh place.

Freshman Sofie Kvarnstrom led the Catamounts with her career-best, 54-hole score of 226, finishing in a seven-way tie for 28th-place overall. Senior Rachel Nelson posted the biggest jump on the final day, advancing 26 spots to finish tied for 38th overall after shooting even-par 72 on the final 18 holes.

The University of Maryland charged to the top of the leader board on the final day, shooting 291 to win by three-strokes over a closing Georgia State squad, which posted a tournament-low round of 290 in the final round to rally from fifth to the runner-up position. The Terrapins shot 879 followed by 882 by Georgia State. Host East Carolina, which led through 36-holes, was relegated to third place at 887, followed by UNC Greensboro (890) and UNC Wilmington (898) to round out the top five.

Other notables include Southern Conference foes Furman in a tie for eighth at 906, the College of Charleston in 13th at 913 and Elon in 18th-place at 940 for the 54-hole event.

Samantha Morrell of Old Dominion advanced four spots on Tuesday to claim individual medalist honors by a stroke over a four-way tie for the runner-up spot. Morrell shot four-under 212 after rounds of 71, 70 and 71.

Opening her final round on the par-3 eighth, Kvarnstrom played the first four holes of her round at one-under after scoring birdie on the par-5 ninth. Three-consecutive bogies - and one-over scoring on four of the next five holes - moved the Orebro, Sweden, native to three-over which is where she played until a double-bogey on the 16th-hole of her final round dropped her to five-over. Kvarnstrom birdied the final hole of her tournament to shoot four-over, 76, for the three-round score of 226.

Nelson bookended her final 18 holes with birdies to lead the team on the final day with an even-par 72 to make the big move in the final standings. The West Chester, Ohio, native was twice at two-over after bogies on the par-4 first and seventh holes on the front nine, and posted one double-bogey over the final 18. But four birdies helped her move back even to finish tied for 38th overall.

Kvarnstrom finished third in the tournament with 13 birdies while Nelson rallied with nine through the 54-hole event. Nelson additionally carded four-under, 4.67, on the par-5 holes during the two-day event.

Senior Blaire Minter came home in a six-way tie for 41st overall at 229 for the three-round event. After posting three-bogies over her first five holes, the Marietta, Ga., native settled to par the next six holes before a birdie on the par-4, second moved her to two-over for the round. However, consecutive bogies followed by a double-bogey on her final hole of the tournament dropped her to six-over, 78.

Rounding out WCU's finishers were freshman Maria Kjelldorff in a tie for 50th with the best three-round score of her young career at 231 and junior Michelle Bello in a tie for 94th (247). Kjelldorff suffered a pair of double bogies and five bogies against only one birdie on her final day.

Western Carolina returns to action in two weeks, concluding the fall portion of its 2011-12 schedule at the Palmetto Intercollegiate, hosted by the College of Charleston at the Oak Point Golf Club at Kiawah Island, S.C. Nelson paced the squad to an eighth-place finish a year ago behind her career-low, 54-hole score.

 

Cougars Finish 13th at Lady Pirate Intercollegiate

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Junior Kathy Boehm highlighted the final round as she eagled the 16th hole and the Cougars finished 13th at the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate hosted by East Carolina at the Greenville Country Club.

The final round tested all competitors as rain poured down for some of the round which resulted in higher scores for many teams. CofC shot rounds of 304-297-312=913 (+49) for the tournament.

Senior Leigh Whittaker was the top finisher for the Cougars as she posted rounds of 75-69-79=223 (+7) and finished 20th.

Boehm, who holed out on her second shot from 150 yards on the par-4 16th hole carded rounds of 74-76-75=225 (+9) and finished 26th.

The Cougars return to action Oct. 23-24 as they host the Palmetto Intercollegiate at the Oak Point golf course on Kiawah Island, S.C.

Elon Finishes 18th at Lady Pirate Intercollegiate

GREENVILLE, N.C. -- A final round score of 320 gave the Elon women's golf team a three-round score of 920 (310-310-320) as the Phoenix finished in 18th place at the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate on Tuesday afternoon.

The Phoenix was led by freshman Kristi Ingram who placed in a tie for 50th in the field of 104 golfers with a two-day total of 231 (72-77-82). Over her three rounds, Ingram carded seven birdies.

Five strokes back in a tie for 71st was Virginia Mayer. Mayer ended the tournament with a score of 236 (80-77-79) and two birdies. Martyna Mierzwa's 241 (80-81-80) placed her in a tie for 84th. Three of Mierzwa's seven birdies came over her final 18 holes.

In a tie for 87th was Shannon Prunty. Prunty shot rounds of 78, 75 and 89 on her way to a tournament mark of 242. She notched three birdies. Finally, Katie Partridge posted her best round of the tournament on Tuesday to finish in a tie for 91st with a mark of 246 (85-82-79). She tallied four birdies.

Old Dominion's Samantha Morrell took home medalist honors after shooting a 212 (71-70-71) over her three rounds.

Maryland, ranked 92nd by Golfweek, claimed the team title with a score of 879 (293-295-291) and edged out 55th-rated Georgia State (293-299-290--882) by three strokes in the field of 20. Host and 59th-ranked East Carolina finished third with a mark of 887 (292-291-304). UNCG (294-291-305--890) and No. 93 UNC Wilmington (300-291-307--898) rounded out the top five teams.

Elon bested both Georgetown (318-305-318--941) and High Point (314-312-323--949) in the team standings.
