Women's golf second at Lady Pirate Intercollegiate, Cnops tied for lead
GREENVILLE, N.C.-UNCG is in second place after shooting a two round score of 585 and Fanny Cnops is tied for the individual lead at 5-under par at the East Carolina Lady Pirate Intercollegiate, which began Monday at Greenville Country Club.
The Spartans opened play with a 294 during the first round and shot 291 during the second round, one stroke shy of tying the school record. UNCG trails overall leader East Carolina (583) by two strokes in the 20-team tournament with Tuesday's final round remaining.
Several Spartans enjoyed strong days, especially during the second round as all five golfers shot 77 or better. But none were better than Cnops.
Cnops, who entered play on Monday ranked 70th nationally while also leading the Southern Conference with a 72.50 stroke average, did nothing to tarnish her standing during the first two rounds. The freshman led the Spartans by shooting a combined score of 139 (69-70). In 36 holes Cnops posted nine birdies, two bogeys and one double bogey. After starting her first round with a double bogey, Cnops played the remaining 17 holes in 5-under par, finishing the first round at 3-under. She shot 2-under during the second round.
Ana Lucia Martinez continued her recent fine play for the Spartans by shooting 2-over par 146 (74-72), and sits in a tie for 14th with two others.
Begona Sarabia is tied for 17th after shooting 147 (73-74), while Courtney Taylor is tied with nine others for 46th at 153 (78-75). Berglind Bjornsdottir is 82nd at 159 (82-77).
The third and final round is scheduled for an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday.

Furman's Wearn In Contention After Second Round At Lady Pirate Intercollegiate
Greenville, N.C. -- Furman's Laura Wearn (-4) fired rounds of 71 and 69 to grab a share of third place after 36 holes on Monday in the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate, hosted by East Carolina University, at the par-72 Greenville Country Club.
Wearn opened tournament play in the morning with a one-under 71. The Charlotte, N.C., native birdied seven holes during the first round and stood at four-under after eight holes before suffering a nine on the par-five No. 9. The junior bounced back with three birdies on the back nine to shoot under par.
In the afternoon round, Wearn picked up where she left off recording a birdie at No. 4 and an eagle on No. 9 to avenge her first round troubles and card a two-under at the turn. She tallied two more birdies on the back nine to finish at three-under 69.
"Laura said she was determined to get revenge on that hole," said Furman head coach Jen Hanna of Wearn's first round struggle at No. 9. "It's amazing what one can do when they set their mind to something."
Wearn trails Fanny Cnops (-5) of UNC Greensboro and Laverry Kumar (-5) of UNC Wilmington by one stroke entering the final round.
Furman senior Liz Wendt (+4) moved into a tie for 20th at eight-over after posting rounds of 75 and 73 on Monday while Paladin freshmen Laura DeMarco (+9) and Daffodil (+9) Sanchez are tied for a share of 46th place.
East Carolina (+7) used a second round 291 to open up a two-stroke lead over second place UNCG (+9) and five-stroke advantage over third place Maryland (+12). UNCW and Georgia State rounded out the top five in front of sixth place Furman (+18).
Final round action for the 20-team field is scheduled to begin with a shotgun start on Tuesday at 8:30 a.m.

Cougars Eighth After Two Rounds of ECU Tournament
GREENVILLE, N.C. - After getting off to a rough start the College of Charleston women's golf team showed resiliency and moved up the leaderboard into eighth place going into the final round of the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate.
Senior Leigh Whittaker led the charge with a 3-under 69 in the second round as the Cougars shot a 9-over second round after an opening 16-over. Whittaker is even-par for the tournament and tied for 9th individually.
After an opening 78 junior Vanessa Koechli came back to card a 1-over 73 in her second round. Junior Kathy Boehm led the Cougars in the first round with a 2-over 74 and is 6-over for the tournament and tied for 31st place.
The Cougars will be paired with conference rival Furman, Georgia State and East Tennessee State tomorrow as they tee off in the final round at 8:30 a.m.

Catamount Women's Golf Tied for Ninth at Lady Pirate Intercollegiate
WCU puts three inside top 40, led by freshman Sofie Kvarnstrom
Greenville, N.C. - The Western Carolina women's golf team carded rounds of 302 and 300 on Monday to stand amidst a three-way tie at 602 following two-rounds of play at the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate hosted by East Carolina at the par-72, 5,980-yard Greenville Country Club.
Freshman Sofie Kvarnstrom fired rounds of two-over 74 and four-over 76 to stand tied amongst seven-others tied for 31st in the individual standings at 150 to lead the Catamounts. Senior Blaire Minter and freshman Maria Kjelldorff are both one-stroke back in a three-way tie for 39th at 151 for WCU.
Paired with golfers from Memphis, James Madison and Pennsylvania, the Catamounts will tee off with a shotgun start on holes eight through 11 on Tuesday morning beginning at 8:30 am. Fans can follow the tournament with live scoring through www.GolfStatResults.com.
Tournament-host East Carolina - ranked 40th in the nation according to the most recent GolfStat rankings - leads Southern Conference foe, UNC Greensboro, by two strokes after 36 holes, 583-to-585. Maryland is third, five strokes in arrears, with UNC Wilmington (591) and Georgia State (592) rounding out the top five.
Other notables include the SoCon-rivals Furman in sixth-place at 594, College of Charleston in eighth, one-stroke ahead of WCU at 601, and Elon in a two-way tie for 16th at 620.
UNCG freshman Fanny Cnops posted rounds of three-under 69 and two-under 70 to stand tied with Laverry Kumar from UNC Wilmington atop the leader board at five-under, 139. Kumar posted the tournament's low-round of 67 over the second 18 to rally from ninth to tie Cnops for first. ECU's Amy Otteson and Furman's Laura Wearn are tied for third, one-stroke off the pace at 140 with Samantha Morrell of Old Dominion rounding out the top five with one-round to play.
Twice beginning play on the par-5 ninth hole, Kvarnstrom carded four birdies against six bogies to play the first round at two-over par in a tie for 16th-place. However, a pair of double-bogies on holes she scored par during the first round - the par-4 seventh and 12th - plagued her round, relegating her to five-over until a birdie on her final hole - the par-3, No. 8 - brought her back to four-over for round two.
Kvarnstrom is tied for second with nine birdies through the first two rounds.
Minter posted six bogies over her opening 18 holes on Monday, countering with two pars to shoot four-over, 76, tied for 37th after the first round. The Marietta, Ga., native then played the first 13 holes of her second round at even-par, countering a pair of bogies with birdies on the par-5 18th and par 4, No. 2. However, she finished her day with two double-bogies sandwiched around a birdie to shoot three-over, 75, to hole her place inside the top 40 entering Tuesday's final round.
Minter is tied with Kjelldorff who rallied from 52nd to stand tied for 39th after 36 holes. The Saltsjobaden, Sweden, native cut three strokes off her opening round 77 to shoot two-over, 74, to close the day, balancing four bogies by carding a pair of birdies.
Rounding out WCU's scorers were senior Rachel Nelson in a tie for 64th at 156 after trimming six strokes off her opening-round of 81 to shoot 75 over the second 18 holes; and junior transfer Michelle Bello who posted rounds of 75 and 86 to stand tied for 85th overall.
The final round gets underway with a shotgun start at 8:30 am on Tuesday.
Ingram Leads Elon Through Two Rounds of Lady Pirate Intercollegiate
GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Freshman Kristi Ingram shot rounds of 72 and 77 to lead the Elon women's golf team through the first two rounds of the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate on Monday. Ingram's performance helped the Phoenix (310-310--620) to a tie for 16th after day one.
Ingram's 149 has her in a tie for 26th among the 104 individuals in the field. Ingram went three-under par on the par-five holes.
In a tie for 46th is Elon's Shannon Prunty. Prunty posted a two-round total of 153 (78-75). Four strokes back in a tie for 71st is Virginia Mayer. Mayer shot a 157 (80-77) and parred 24 of her 36 holes on the day.
Martyna Mierzwa's 161 (80-81) has her in a tie for 85th while Katie Partridge posted a mark of 167 (85-82) to sit in a tie for 98th with one round to play.
UNC Wilmington's Laverry Kumar and UNCG's Fanny Cnops are tied for the individual lead with a two round score of 139.
Host East Carolina, ranked 59th in the latest Golfweek rankings, leads the 20-team field with a two-round mark of 583 (292-291). UNCG's 585 (294-291) has the Spartans in second. The rest of the top five includes 92nd-ranked Maryland (293-295--588), 93rd-rated UNC Wilmington (300-291--591) and 55th-ranked Georgia State (293-299--592).
Other SoCon teams in the field include Furman (6th; 295-299--594), College of Charleston (8th; 304-297--601) and Western Carolina (T9th; 302-300--602).
The Phoenix is tied for 16th with William & Mary (314-306--620) and leads Bucknell (308-314--622), Georgetown (318-305--623) and High Point (314-312--626).
The final round of the tournament will be held on Tuesday at the par-72 Greenville Country Club course.
