Davidson Wrestling Opens Pennsylvania Trip with Win Over F&M
LANCASTER, Pa. - Sophomore Ike Crews earned a pin at 184 pounds to lead the Davidson wrestling team to their first dual win of the season, 27-15, over Franklin & Marshall Friday afternoon at Mayser Center.
With the Wildcats (1-1, 0-1 SoCon) holding an 18-9 lead over the Diplomats (0-5, 0-3 EIWA), Crews pinned Matt Latessa in three minutes, 38 seconds to put the match out of reach at 24-9. Davidson forfeited at 197 pounds and heavyweight Charlie Wolff earned a 6-2 decision over Daniel Canfield for the final 27-15 margin.
The 'Cats led from the start as Franklin & Marshall spotted the 'Cats six points at 125 pounds. Jacob Bucha earned a 4-1 decision over Alex Radsky at 133 pounds to cut the lead in half, but the Diplomats spotted the 'Cats another six points at 141 pounds. The teams traded decisions over the next four weights, with Scott Ray (149 pounds) and Tyler Mullen (165 pounds) prevailing for the 'Cats.
Davidson will next compete in the Pitt Duals Sunday, facing Pittsburgh, Drexel and Millersville.

UNCG falls to No. 10 Lehigh, Bucknell at Virginia Duals
HAMPTON, Va. - Peter Sturgeon capped off the day for UNCG with a pin in just six seconds, but the Spartans fell to No. 10 Lehigh and Bucknell to be eliminated from the Virginia Duals on Friday afternoon at the Hampton Coliseum.
The Spartans started their day off with a 33-6 defeat at the hands of No. 10 Lehigh before falling in the consolation bracket to Bucknell, 21-17, to fall out of the duals.
UNCG is now 2-7 in dual matches this season, while Lehigh is 9-2 this year and Bucknell improved to 3-5.
Sturgeon's pin in an amazing six seconds is thought to be a school record, but can't be verified due to missing statistical information in prior years.
In the first match, UNCG dropped the first three matches, but rebounded with a win by No. 16 Ivan Lopouchanski at 149 pounds. He scored a 10-8 decision against Lehigh's Joey Napoli and Cody Rodebaugh followed that up with a win of his own. He pulled out a 4-2 win at 157 pounds, but the Spartans lost the final five bouts to fall, 33-6.
The Spartans hopped out to an early 7-0 lead in the second match as Robert Gribschaw scored an 8-6 decision before Jamel Johnson won by major decision, 14-3, at 133 pounds. The Bison from Bucknell rallied to win the next four matches, including two by major decision, to jump in front, 14-7.
Byron Sigmon would go on to score a 17-4 major decision at 174 pounds to pull UNCG within 14-11, but that was as close as they would get the rest of the night. Bucknell took the next two matches before Sturgeon pulled off his six second pin in the final match.
The Spartans return to the mat on Jan. 16 as they travel to Davidson to open Southern Conference action at 7:30 p.m.

Keydets Fall to No. 2 Penn State, Old Dominion in Virginia Duals
LEXINGTON, Va.- The VMI wrestling team was eliminated from the 2011 Virginia Duals Fri., Jan 7 in Hampton, Va., as the Keydets were defeated by No. 2 Penn State 42-3 and 38-3 by Old Dominion in the double-elimination dual meet format. Sophomore John Dommert and senior Josh Wine picked up the two wins for VMI on the day.
Against Penn State, the Nittany Lions rattled off seven-consecutive wins before Dommert bested PSU's Andrew Church by an 8-4 tally at 174 lbs. In the marquee bout of the match, Penn State junior heavyweight No. 7 Cameron Wade knocked off VMI's No. 11 Josh Wine 7-2 in the final bout of the match.
Facing the Monarchs of Old Dominion in the second match of the day, VMI once again struggled to find its stride. The Keydets dropped the first nine matches of the meet before Wine thwarted ODU's shutout bid, defeating Grant Chapman by a 2-0 shutout to run the final tally 38-3.
VMI returns to the mat on Fri., Jan. 14 in its first home dual match of the season, as VMI will play host to ACC opponent North Carolina State University from Cocke Hall. The match is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m., and live stats will be available via VMIKeydets.com.

Mocs Drop Two Matches at the Virginia Duals
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team dropped two matches at the Virginia Duals in Hampton, Va., today. The Mocs lost to No. 19 Arizona State 22-18 in the opening round of the 16-team tournament. Chattanooga then fell to Rider 33-10 in the consolation bracket. With the losses, UTC is now 5-8 on the year.
The Mocs looked like they might match-up well against the 19th-ranked Sun Devils but injuries and illnesses kept UTC from putting its full lineup of starters on the mat. Head CoachHeath Eslinger knew he would not have his top guys at 133 and 141. Senior Cody Cleveland (Tullahoma, Tenn.), ranked No. 8 in the nation at 141 this week, is still recovering from a hamstring injury he suffered at the Reno Tournament of Champions in December. Junior Demetrius Johnson(Memphis, Tenn.) has not seen the mat at 133 this year due to offseason knee surgery.
Chattanooga also lost starters at three other weights in the days leading up to the Virginia Duals. At 149, sophomore Alex Hudson (Marietta, Ga.) was out with a leg injury he suffered in practice this week and sophomoreDean Pavlou (Cleveland, Tenn.) was out with the flu. At 197, sophomore Niko Brown (Kissimmee, Fla.) is nursing a rib injury and was also unable to go. The surprise omission was at 125, where sophomore Prescott Garner (West Linn, Ore.) made his weight, but then fell ill prior to the match.
That took five starters out of the fold against a top-25 opponent. Regardless, the Mocs battled hard and nearly pulled off the upset. Chattanooga gave up bonus points in the first two matches and found itself down 9-0.
Freshman Shawn Greevy (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) continued his strong season with a pin over ASU's Kailin Goodsite at 141, pulling the score back to 9-6. Goodsite came into the match with a 15-9 record, but Greevy was able to improve to 6-3 with his third pin of the year.
"Shawn did a great job," stated Eslinger. "Every time he competes we miss less and less of Cody because he gets better. Now Cody doesn't have to rush back and can be rested and at 100% when the conference season starts. Regardless, Shawn continues to make improvements and is showing that he can wrestle at the highest level."
Freshman Trevor Herron (Cleveland, Tenn.) was forced to wrestle up a class since Hudson and Pavlou were out. He posted an impressive 5-4 decision to tie the team score at 9-9. The Sun Devils went back up 12-9 after No. 4 Bubba Jenkins defeated sophomore Josh Condon (Powder Springs, Ga.) 9-3, but Chattanooga took a 15-12 lead following a forfeit at 165. The score was tied again when ASU's Eric Starks defeated junior Brandon Wright(Germantown, Tenn.) at 174.
Junior Jason McCroskey (Soddy Daisy, Tenn.) gave the Mocs their last lead of the day when he won his 184 match 5-2 over Jake Meredith. Arizona State took the last two matches to secure the win.
"We had five starters out of our lineup and gave ourselves a chance to win," added Eslinger. "It shows that we have kids in the room who can step up and help us win. It is a long year and everyone is dealing with injuries. We have to find a way to work around it and it can't be an excuse. We want to win every match, but it is most important that our guys are healthy when the conference season rolls around."

UTC then took on Rider in the consolation round. The Mocs never could get things going against the Broncs, dropping each of the first seven matches. McCroskey and sophomore Robert Prigmore (Southlake, Texas) won at 184 and 197, respectively, to give Chattanooga its 10 points. McCroskey won a major decision while Prigmore scored his second pin of the year.
"We just matched up horribly with them," explained Eslinger. "They came out and took it to us right from the start. We could not get any advantage and they wrestled very well."
