Charleston, S.C. - The Citadel soccer player Mariana Garcia was tabbed to the 2010 Soccer America All-Freshman second team. Garcia, the lone Southern Conference honoree, joins players from around the nation from the likes of Duke, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, North Carolina and Notre Dame.
Garcia, the 2010 SoCon women's soccer Player and Freshman of the Year, led the Bulldogs in goals (10), shots (53), shots on goal (32), points (21) and game winning goals (5). A starter in all 21 matches played this season, the Bogota, Colombia, native finished tied first for goals scored and held sole possession of first place in game-winning goals among the league stat leaders.
Garcia surged into The Citadel record books earning sixth place for most goals in a career and tied for seventh for most points in a career. Additionally, she finished in third place for most points and goals in a season and tied for third for most shots in a season.
Garcia racked up numerous awards during her outstanding rookie campaign. Along with capturing the SoCon individual awards, Garcia was garnered to the first and freshmen All-Conference teams. She was also selected to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Women's College Soccer Freshman Top 100 Players to Watch at No. 100 and ranked No. 2 on the website's Top 20 ranking in the Southern Conference, improving from a previous ranking of No. 15.
