SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Chattanooga forward Whitney Hood has been selected the Southern Conference women's basketball player of the week for all games played from December 21 through January 3.
The junior from Meridian, Miss., scored a then-career-high 32 points against Kennesaw State in an overtime loss on Dec. 21. Hood followed that showing by putting up 15 points in a 66-61 win against Belmont, which ended a four-game losing streak for the Lady Mocs. On Jan. 2, Hood bested her career high against Wofford with 40 points to set a McKenzie Arena record in a 93-88 come-from-behind win. The 40 points is the most points scored this season in the SoCon, and her 32 field goal attempts was the second-highest single game total in conference history. Against the Terriers, Hood also pulled down 12 rebounds to post her fourth career double-double.
Hood currently leads the conference and ranks seventh nationally in scoring (22.7 ppg). She is also fourth in and conference and 22nd in the nation in field goal percentage (.564).
Chattanooga returns to the court on Tuesday when the Paladins visit McKenzie Arena at 7 p.m.
Other top performers in the opening week of play were Appalachian State's Anna Freeman, Elon's Kelsey Evans, Georgia Southern's Meredyth Frye, UNCG's Amanda Leigh and Samford's Emily London.
