SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Chattanooga's Omar Wattad has been named the Southern Conference Player of the Week for all games played January 11-17 the league office announced Tuesday (Jan. 18). Wattad averaged 24.7 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists in victories over The Citadel (69-68), Samford (65-60) and College of Charleston (91-88).
The junior scored a career-high 30 points in Chattanooga's 69-68 victory at The Citadel. It was the first 30-point game for a Moc since Stephen McDowell tallied 32 against Samford in the 2009 Southern Conference Tournament and was just the 45th 30-point game in school history. Wattad scored 17 points on the strength of 5-of-11 shooting from three-point range against Samford. He then scored a game-high 27 points and pulled down six rebounds as Chattanooga defeated College of Charleston in a matchup of two undefeated teams in league play.
In addition to his 24.7 points per game average last week, Wattad shot 46 percent from the field (24-of-52) and connected on 54 percent (19-of-35) of his shots from beyond the arc.
Wattad ranks seventh in the Southern Conference in scoring (15.7 ppg) and is second in made three-pointers per game (3.3).
Chattanooga (11-8, 7-0 SoCon) returns to the action Thursday when the Mocs visit Wofford at 7:00 p.m.
Other top performers in the Southern Conference included Appalachian State's Omar Carter, College of Charleston's Andrew Goudelock, The Citadel's Cameron Wells, Georgia Southern's Ben Drayton III, UNCG's Aaron Brackett, Western Carolina's Trey Sumler and Wofford's Noah Dahlman.
