ASU Wrestling Secures Two Wins at Lonestar Duals
ARLINGTON, Texas- Appalachian State University wrestling (6-7, 0-1 SoCon) secured two wins against one defeat at the annual Lonestar Duals to move the Mountaineers' career record at the event to 6-5 overall in three appearances on Saturday.
The Black and Gold grapplers tallied back-to-back victories against Harvard, 22-17 and Northern Colorado, 28-12, but fell to Utah Valley, 19-16.
During the Harvard dual, Appalachian dropped the 125 and 133 matches, but bounced back when junior Mike Kessler (Bay City, Mich./Western) defeated Joe Marino, 6-3 at 141. Freshman Russell Benner (Roselle Park, N.J./Roselle Park) notched the Mountaineers' next win of the match by earning his first pin of the season against Joe Alie in the first period in 1:28 in the 149-pound weight class.
ASU cruised to three more wins as junior #18 Kyle Blevins (Sapulpa, Okla./Sapulpa) pinned Nick Brazeau in 4:17 during the second period at 165 and redshirt junior #25 Austin Trotman (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) scored a major decision against Cameron Croy, 14-3 during the 184 match. Sophomore Paul Glover (Rochester, N.Y./Spencerport) completed Appalachian's wins by earning a 7-2 decision over Bryan Panzano at 197.
Sophomore Tony Gravely (Martinsville, Va./Magna Vista) opened up the Northern Colorado dual by winning the 125 match-up, 6-3, against Sam Bauer. ASU dropped the 133-match, but Kessler was able to pick-up his second win of the day via a forfeit. Benner ran the Mountaineers' third ranked opponent of the day and fell to #5 Justin Gaethje. Appalachian recorded victories in five of their last six matches to put away Northern Colorado.
The Apps faced their toughest competition of the tournament against Utah Valley. The Mountaineers took losses in the first four matches before sophomore John Blakely (Birmingham, Ala./Oak Mountain) got ASU on the board at 157 by knocking off Richard Winger, 8-4. Blevins recorded his third victory of the tournament by earning a close decision against #29 Jeb Clark, 3-1. With Utah Valley still in the lead, Appalachian closed the gap with Trotman scoring a major decision against Casen Eldredge, 15-5 and Glover earning the decision against Trevor Rupp, 5-4, but were unable to get any closer despite, freshman Marc Tyson (Monroe, N.J./Monroe Township) tallying a 2-0 decision against Christan Denny.
With Blevins' three decisions, he currently has a career-high 27 wins on the season and needs just three to become the latest Mountaineer to post 30 wins in a season since Scott Ervin did so in 2008. Trotman joined the 20-win club with his three wins on Saturday and now has 22 wins for the season and 80 wins for his career. Trotman is now only two wins shy of breaking into the career wins list.
The Mountaineers are back in action on Jan. 21, taking on UNC at 8:30 p.m. in Chapel Hill.

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team split a pair of matches at Missouri today. The Mocs scored a 35-10 win over Southern Illinois-Edwardsville and dropped a 29-9 bout with No. 20 Missouri in the Hearnes Center in Columbia, Mo.
Sophomore Dean Pavlou (Cleveland, Tenn.) led the Mocs with two wins at 149 as Chattanooga moves to 6-9 overall. Against the Cougars, sophomore Prescott Garner (West Linn, Ore.) opened with a win at 125. He pinned Kris Treat at the 1:46 mark in the match to score his sixth fall and improve to 15-9 on the year.
SIUE's John Petrov came back with a major decision over freshman Adam Wilson (Atlanta, Ga.) at 133. That made the team score 6-4 and was as close as the Cougars would get the rest of the way.
Freshman Shawn Greevy (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) continued his strong season with a technical fall against Nick Capozzoli at 141, upping the team margin to 11-4. Pavlou continued the Mocs' run with a 5-3 decision over Derrick Pousson at 149.
Head coach Heath Eslinger switched his lineup at 157, giving senior Kelly Felix (Franklin, Tenn.) his first action of the year. Felix responded with a technical fall against Kyle Lowman. Junior Dan Waddell (Chattanooga, Tenn.) followed that up with a pin against Gabe Hocum at 165. Waddell's win was his first pin of the season and gave Chattanooga a 25-4 advantage.
The Cougars rounded out their scoring when Michael Dace pinned freshman Levi Clemons (Kissimmee, Fla.) at 174. Junior Jason McCroskey (Soddy Daisy, Tenn.) won his 184 match by major decision while sophomoreRobert Prigmore (Southlake, Texas) and Matt Lettner (Soddy Daisy, Tenn.) won by decision at 197 and 285, respectively.
The Mocs knew they would have to put up a near-perfect match to take down the Tigers, but fell behind early with losses in the first three matches. Pavlou got UTC on the board with his 8-6 decision over Kyle Bradley.
Bradley jumped out to a 5-0 lead with a takedown and a near fall less than two minutes into the first period. Pavlou battled back with an escape and a takedown before the end of the period. The score moved to 6-5 after the second period and Pavlou tied it up early in the third with an escape. He scored the winning takedown with 27 second left on the clock, improving to 11-10 on the year.
Sophomore Josh Condon (Powder Springs, Ga.) was well rested at 157 after sitting out the SIUE match. He was leading Missouri's Nick Gregoris 3-2 in the third period when he scored his second takedown of the match. From there he pinned Gregoris at the 5:24 mark, closing the team gap to 13-9 in favor of the Tigers.
Unfortunately for Chattanooga, that was all of the scoring they could muster on the afternoon. McCroskey nearly scored an upset at 184, but 15th-ranked Mike Larsen escaped with 1:46 left on the clock for a 3-2 decision.
Chattanooga returns home on Jan. 30 to open its Southern Conference schedule. UTC hosts The Citadel at 2:00 p.m. in Maclellan Gym. The Mocs have won six consecutive SoCon regular season titles and own a 30-match unbeaten streak in league action.
