Davidson 79, Furman 70
DAVIDSON, N.C. - Nik Cochran scored a career-high 22 points, and Davidson held Furman without a field goal for 10:20 in the second half to post a 79-70 Southern Conference men's basketball victory over the Paladins Wednesday night in Belk Arena.
Cochran made all three of his field goal attempts, which all came from behind the 3-point line, and netted 13-of-15 from the free-throw line. JP Kuhlman added 14 points for the Wildcats (8-8, 2-3 SoCon), and De'Mon Brooks recorded 11 points, eight rebounds and three assists.
Jordan Miller led the Paladins (11-5, 3-2 SoCon) with 21 points, and Colin Reddick scored 13 points, with nine coming from the charity stripe. Noah States added 10 points.
The teams combined for 51 fouls and shot 71 free throws, making 55. Davidson shot 76 percent from the line, and Furman made 79 percent. The Wildcat bench exploded for 40 points as a few starters sat most of the first frame in foul trouble.
After a layup by Amu Saaka that made the score 53-52 in favor of the 'Cats with 11:47 left , Davidson held the Paladins without a field goal until Miller hit a triple with 1:27 to play. The Wildcats opened that stretch with an 11-2 run, capped by a Cochran 3-pointer from the corner, that made the margin 64-54 with 8:33 remaining.
After Furman trimmed the lead to 66-60 on a pair of Brandon Sebirumbi free throws, Clint Mann answered with a driving layup, and Tom Droney tallied a conventional 3-point play to push the lead back to 11 with 1:47 to go. Davidson went 8-for-10 from the line the rest of the way to seal the win.
The Paladins used an 11-4 spurt, capped by a pair of Sebirumbi free throws, to open a 28-19 cushion in the first half. Davidson responded by capping the half on an 18-4 run to take a 39-35 edge at the break. Cochran scored seven points during the stretch, and Brooks added six.
Wofford 74, Georgia Southern 65
STATESBORO, Ga. - The Wofford College men's basketball team picked up a 74-65 win over Georgia Southern at Hanner Fieldhouse on Wednesday night. The Terriers led by as many 17 points as late in the second half, but the Eagles fought back to make it close in the end.
Wofford is 7-9 on the season and 4-1 in the Southern Conference and Georgia Southern is 4-14 overall and 0-5 in SoCon play. The Terriers were led by Noah Dahlman, who had 26 points and six rebounds and was a perfect 10-of-10 from the floor. Terry Martin added 15 points and Kevin Giltner scored eleven. The Eagles were led by Ben Drayton with 15 points and Jelani Hewitt with four rebounds.
The Terriers scored first and used two three pointers by Kevin Giltner to take an 11-8 lead at the 13:12 mark in the first half. Two lay-ups by Terry Martin pushed the advantage to 15-8 at 9:34. The Eagles battled back with three pointers and took a 26-25 lead with 2:14 left in the first half. A three by Cameron Rundles regained the advantage for Wofford at 28-26 with 1:38 on the clock and a bucket by Noah Dahlman at the buzzer made it a 30-26 contest at the half.
To begin the second half, Wofford had a put-back by Tim Johnson. The Terriers held a 37-33 advantage four minutes into play. A traditional three point play and a three by Kevin Giltner pushed the lead to 42-33 at the 13:54 mark. Two free throws by Jamar Diggs and a lay-up by Noah Dahlman made it a 51-38 score with 9:05 left in the half.
Wofford added to the lead and had a 15 point advantage with eight minutes left after two more free throws by Jamar Diggs. The Terriers kept going inside and had a 64-50 lead with 1:33 left in the game. The Eagles answered with full-court pressure that forced two turnovers and cut the lead to 64-57 after a three by Zuri James with 46 seconds left. After four straight free throws for Wofford, James hit another three and added a foul shot to make it 68-61 game with 26 seconds on the clock. The Terriers were able to make six straight free throws down the stretch for a 74-65 final score.
Wofford shot a 58.5 percent from the floor and made 45.5 percent of its attempts from three-point range. Georgia Southern was shot 49 percent from the floor overallThe Terriers had a 26-19 lead in rebounds and forced 15 turnovers.
