SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Appalachian State's Omar Carter has been named the Southern Conference Player of the Week for all games played January 4-10 the league office announced Tuesday (Jan. 11). Carter averaged 25.0 points and 6.0 rebounds in victories over Davidson (74-66) and Georgia Southern (79-51). Carter becomes the first player to win the weekly award twice this season after being named the league's Player of the Week on November 16.
Playing at Davidson, the Charlotte, N.C., native scored a game-high 25 points to lift ASU past the Wildcats last Wednesday. Carter scored 19 of his points in the second half, including three late free throws which helped ice the win for the Mountaineers. The junior guard then scored a game-high 25 points in the win against Georgia Southern Saturday afternoon. Carter did the bulk of his scoring from three-point range, connecting on 5-of-8 attempts from beyond the arc against the Eagles. He added five rebounds and three seals against Georgia Southern. Carter was 17-of-32 (.531) from the floor for the week and added 12 rebounds, four steals and three assists.
Carter is fifth in the Southern Conference in scoring (15.7 ppg) and ranks seventh in three-point field goal percentage (.435).
Appalachian State (7-7, 3-1 SoCon) returns to the action Thursday when the Mountaineers host UNCG at 7:00 p.m.
Other top performers in the Southern Conference included College of Charleston's Andrew Goudelock, The Citadel's Cameron Wells, Elon's Drew Spradlin, Georgia Southern's Ben Drayton III, Chattanooga's Omar Wattad, Western Carolina's Trey Sumler and Wofford's Noah Dahlman.
