Appalachian State 3, Marist 1
DAVIDSON, N.C. Appalachian State men's soccer (1-0-1) triumphed over Marist (1-2), 3-1, and took home second place on the final day of the Davidson adidas Classic on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Stadium on the campus of Davidson.
After not scoring a goal in their 0-0 tie against Bowling Green on Friday night, the Mountaineers wasted no time trying to find the back of the net on Sunday. Junior Chad Dalton (Tampa, Fla./Land O'Lakes) launched a shot 2:56 into the match, but the attempt was wide. Less than six minutes later, senior Steven Sassano (Liverpool, England/Hillside) attacked the net again with a shot, but resulted in a save for Marist goalkeeper Joe Pilla.
On ASU's first corner kick of the afternoon taken by Sassano, junior Ryan Duffy (Apex, N.C./Apex) headed the ball into the net to score Duffy and the Apps first goal of the season, putting Appalachian up early, 1-0.
After Sassano attempted three more corners, sophomore David Dodge (Oviedo, Fla./Oviedo), Dalton, junior Sean Dreybus (Newport News, Va./Warwick) each tried to increase the Mountaineer lead, but settled for a 1-0 halftime lead.
Coming out of the intermission, both teams traded shots for much of the half. Junior Collin Taylor (Morganton, N.C./Freedom) collected all three of his saves during this period for the victory. It was not until the end of the second half, before either team would score a goal.
After allowing Marist's Lucus Szabo to net a goal at 81:11, that would be Marist's only goal of the match, as ASU scored two quick goals to put the match away for the Mountaineers. Dalton ran past the MC defender and scored from 10 yards out off the pass from sophomore Ethan Durland (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville Road) to put the Black and Gold up, 2-1.
Minutes later, Dreybus, who attempted three shots on the afternoon, found the back of the net off the pass from junior Bruno Mbamala (Grand Prairie, Texas/South Grand Prairie) for Appalachian's final goal of the match.
ASU outshot the Red Foxes, 15-11, with the Mountaineers holding the advantage on the corner kicks, 6-5. The Apps were led in shots by Dalton (four) and Dreybus.
Players from each team were selected for an all-tournament team for their performance over the weekend and Taylor, Dalton and Duffy were selected as ASU's representatives.
Appalachian gets back on the field on Friday, Sept. 10 to take on Cincinnati as part of the Big East adidas Challenge. Action is set to begin at 7 p.m. from Gettler Stadium.
Davidson 2, Bowling Green 2
DAVIDSON, N.C. - Alex Caskey and George Ramsay both tallied goals for Davidson, but Bowling Green was able to match their production and battle to a 2-2 draw in the third game of the Davidson adidas Classic Sunday afternoon at Alumni Stadium. Appalachian State (1-0-1) defeated Marist 3-1 in the tournament's final match Sunday evening, giving Davidson (1-0-1) the tournament title based on goal differential.
Caskey, senior forward Yannick Pilgrim, junior forward Mark Millard and junior defender Greg Macnamara were all named to the all-tournament team.
Caskey's goal came just before the conclusion of the first half on a feed from Pilgrim.
"Alex's goal was 1st class," said Davidson head coach Matt Spear. "Yannick fed him an excellent pass, and Alex made the 1st touch, dribble, and shot look so graceful."
Bowling Green battled back and evened the match 4:45 into the second half as Zach Schwee was able to convert a corner kick.
Ramsay put the 'Cats back on top at 62:36 after intercepting a Bowling Green clearing attempt.
"George showed great composure and touch on his goal," said Spear. "The tendency is to rush that kind of opportunity, or go for power rather than finesse."
A long goal from Max Weston evened the game though with less than 10 minutes remaining. Both teams had opportunities in overtime, but were unable to convert.
"It was a hard fought game, and we definitely can learn early in our season from its intensity," said Spear. "I give a ton of credit to Bowling Green. They came back twice from a goal down, and they battled to the final whistle. That shows a lot of character, and that is in line with a Eric Nichols' squad."
Miguel Rosales made six saves for Bowling Green, while Davidson keeper Chip Sanders made five stops. Bowling Green held a slight advantage in total shots, 16-15.
Davidson returns to action Tuesday night at Alumni Stadium, hosting Campbell at 7 p.m.
