Georgia Southern 3, Charleston Southern 2

STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Women's Soccer team exploded for three goals in the first half and kept Charleston Southern out of the net late to take a 3-2 victory over the Buccaneers Sunday (September 5) at Eagle Field. With the win, Georgia Southern improved to 2-2-0, while Charleston Southern fell to 3-2-0.

"I think we really grew up today," Head Coach Ashley Hart stated. "We went behind early, and started out slow, but I was proud of our team to score three goals and hold on at the end when Charleston Southern was really playing well."

The Eagles scored three first-half goals to take a 3-1 lead into the locker room at halftime. Elena Karakizis (Lilburn, Ga.) evened the match with her first goal of the season. The freshman got the ball from Alex Murphy (Cincinnati, Ohio) and buried it in the top of the net in the 29th minute.

Kyrstin Smith (Acworth, Ga.) gave the Eagles the lead just over a minute later. The junior got the ball just outside the 18-yard box and sent it into the net over the outstretched arms of Charleston Southern goalkeeper Amy Arroyo in the 30th minute.

In the 40th minute, Sara Oland (Evans, Ga.) out-raced three Buccaneer defenders to catch up to a long ball from Morgan Springer (Mandeville, La.). The junior took just one touch to bury the ball in the right side of the net to give Georgia Southern a 3-1 lead.

"We had a lot of players step up today," Hart said. "Sara (Oland) has scored some goals for us and been consistent with that, but to have Elena (Karakizis) and Kyrstin (Smith) both step up and score some goals from distance, I think it really stretched our attack zone."

Marky Boyce put Charleston Southern on the board first with a goal in the fourth minute, her eighth goal of the season. The senior took possession in the attacking third to score the unassisted goal. Caitlin Wesnesky cut the Eagles' lead to 3-2 with a goal in the 70th minute, but Georgia Southern goalkeeper Missy Meyer (Alpharetta, Ga.) made three saves while keeping the Buccaneers scoreless over the final 18 and a half minutes.

The win improved Furman to 3-2-0 on the season while Presbyterian dipped to 1-3-1.

Elon 3, Coastal Carolina 1

WILMINGTON, N.C. - The Elon women's soccer team took home the UNCW Hilton Garden Inn Invitational title as the only undefeated team in the tournament after posting an impressive 3-1 victory over the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers on Sunday afternoon at UNCW Soccer Stadium. The Phoenix (3-1) has won three straight contests. Coastal Carolina dropped to 2-4 on the year.

Senior Brittany Hallberg was named the tournament MVP after netting the golden goal in Elon's double-overtime victory against Gardner-Webb on Friday night. The all-tournament team included senior Alanna Winsper, sophomores Scarlett Fakhar and Jacyln Wood and freshman Kimmie Krauss.

"It certainly was an absolutely beautiful day for soccer and the girls executed our plan to nearly clinical perfection," said Elon head coach Chris Neal. "We created 13 opportunities which was fantastic to see since we had gained a lot of possession in our earlier games but were not able to create the type of chances we produced today."

Elon got on the board midway through the first half. The Phoenix developed play down the right flank where Wood sent a perfect cross to the far post and found the foot of freshman Jennifer McGorty. Coastal keeper Jessica Barton came over the challenge the play, but McGorty touched it past her to give Elon the 1-0 advantage at 22:27.

Fifteen minutes later, the Phoenix struck again with a goal from rookie Chelsey Stark. Freshman Olivia Mackey bent a corner kick toward the far post and Stark skied above everyone and banged the header home as Elon took a two-goal lead at 37:42.

The Chanticleers countered in the 40th minute when Anna Tupy dribbled into the box and nailed a shot into the lower left corner of the net to split the lead in half.

At the break, Elon held a 9-2 advantage in shots, having forced Barton to make five saves through 45 minutes.

The Phoenix padded its lead in the 69th minute of action when another rookie duo teamed up for a score. Catherine Brinkman had the ball in the middle of the field and turned and made a blind pass to the left side right into Krauss's path. Krauss took one touch to the middle and then finished a pretty shot past new Coastal goalie Amy Haggard.

"On Friday we came out and played well but were not able to create many chances on goal," said Wood. "Today, we knew Coastal was a very good team and we made a few changes. I think this is a big step going forward to see how we can create chances. We have a lot of depth and everyone seems to be blending well. This weekend we showed a lot of who we are going to be this season."

Elon will look to extend its winning streak when it returns home to challenge UNC Asheville on Thursday, September 9 at 6 p.m. at Rudd Field.

Samford 1, UAB 0

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford University soccer team picked up its biggest win of the 2010 season Sunday as the Bulldogs registered a thrilling 1-0 victory against cross-town rival UAB at Bulldog Field. Samford's game-winning goal was scored by sophomore Kaley Blanton in the 13th minute of play, her second of the weekend.

"This was a great win for us tonight," said Samford head coach Todd Yelton. "This was everything that these players have experienced before arriving at the collegiate level. It was almost like a high school rivalry or an intense club game that really mattered, so this was a great win for us to be able to have the bragging rights."

The Bulldogs' junior goalkeeper Alyssa Whitehead recorded her second complete shutout of the season after making four crucial stops in the victory. With the performance, she improved her goals-against average to 1.34 on the season.

"Winning this game tonight was big for us because it gives us more confidence," said Whitehead. "We had a slow start to the season, but right now everybody is coming together and working as a team. This positive outcome against UAB shows that we can beat really good teams if we hang tough and play hard."

Samford (2-2-1) earned its second straight win against a Conference USA opponent Sunday. On Friday, the Bulldogs started the weekend with a 4-0 home triumph over Southern Miss. Samford remained undefeated at Bulldog Field this season and improved its record at home to 1-0-1.

After opening the 2010 campaign with road losses at Alabama and 18th-ranked Memphis, the Bulldogs have rallied back this season with a 2-2 draw with Mercer and a pair of shutout wins against Southern Miss 4-0 and UAB 1-0.

"We've known all along that we've had a talented bunch of players," Yelton said. "We've had to make some changes and move some people around and it just takes a bit of time, but tonight and Friday we really played well and we've really gained a lot of confidence. Right now, we feel good about where we, but we just need to come back on Tuesday to continue to work hard and improve as a team."

With Sunday's loss, UAB (3-3) had its three-match winning streak snapped. Heading into the contest, the Blazers were coming off consecutive victories against Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Western Carolina.

Samford also took a lead in its all-time series record against UAB. With the win, the Bulldogs improved to 2-1 all-time versus the Blazers. The teams have faced each other three times in the previous four seasons, with each team winning on its home field.

Samford's game-winning goal was scored at exactly 12:18 into Sunday's match. On the score, true freshman midfielder Trine Taule battled through a crowd of UAB defenders on the right flank and sent a pinpoint pass up ahead to Blanton in the box.

Blanton, the Bulldogs' sophomore forward from Mandeville, La., gathered the pass 20 yards away from the goal, faked to her left and went around the Blazers' final defender to her right. After evading UAB's last line of defense, Blanton pushed ahead to five yards out and beat the goalkeeper to the bottom right corner of the net.

The goal was Blanton's second of the season and her second of the weekend. She also scored a goal in the Samford's 4-0 victory against Southern Miss on Friday. The Bulldogs' Taule earned her second assist of the season on the play.

"This was a great win for us and I think it will give us some good momentum as we get closer to the conference season," Blanton said. "It was a very good game to get us ready for the rest of the season, because UAB is a really good team. It feels awesome to be able to contribute to the team more now, but I can't take the credit for scoring the goal. Our defenders did an awesome job of getting the ball and then the midfielders did an awesome job of setting me up."

With Sunday's victory against UAB, Samford improved its all-time record against Conference USA opponents to 8-7. So far this season, the Bulldogs have defeated Southern Miss and UAB, but dropped a 3-0 decision at No. 18 Memphis.

"This win will mean a lot for us as we go forward," said Yelton. "This was a win over a really good team and we're really happy, but we also realize that this is a very long season and we still have a lot of tough matches ahead of us."

The Samford University soccer team will next be in action Friday at 7 p.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs begin play in the 2010 Samford Soccer Tournament against the Kennesaw State Owls at Bulldog Field.

Cal State Fullerton 2, #18 UNCG 0

FULLERTON, Calif. - Cal State Fullerton's Casey Volk had a goal and an assist as the Titans handed No. 18 UNCG its first loss of the season in the final game of the Under Armour Invitational on Sunday.

The Spartans (3-1-1) took twice as many shots as Cal State Fullerton - outshooting the Titans 16-8 - but Fullerton (2-2-0) made the most of its few chances.

After a scoreless first half, Volk got Fullerton on the board in the 47th minute, nodding home a Caitlin Mellano cross far post for the first goal against the Spartans in 253:56, spanning four games.

Finding itself trailing for the first time on the season, UNCG fell further behind in the 59th minute on Christina Murillo's close-range blast. Volk got the play started, running down a ball just before it crossed the end line and saving it back toward the goal. Kishi Smith headed the ball on to Murillo, who buried it near post from just a few yards out to make it a 2-0 affair.

UNCG had the run of play in the first half, but ran into some tough luck. Jenn Partenheimer put a nice left-footed shot on frame just four minutes into the game, forcing a Jordan-Michelle Santos save. Santos was unable to corral the ball, but it squirted harmlessly away and was cleared by Geminesse Martinez before another UNCG player could pounce on it.

Partenheimer had another nice scoring chance shortly after that, but her 30-yard attempt smacked off the crossbar in the sixth minute. Jaimey Etten's free kick from about the same spot was just high in the 34th minute, and sophomore Jessi Gulledge smoked a long-range shot just before halftime that also found the crossbar.

The Spartans continued to create nice chances in the second half, but just couldn't punch one in.

Tabitha Padgett's attempt from the left corner of the 18-yard box was saved near post just before Murillo's strike. Cat Barnekow had a pair of good opportunities late, but put both just wide. She appeared to have Santos beaten in the 61st minute, but her chip attempt was just wide left. Her shot in the 88th forced Santos to lay out to her left, but Barnekow's shot went wide right.

Lauren Hein also had a solid chance in the 78th minute, but her attempt was just high. Katie Evans' attempt in the 88th minute was saved by Santos.

"We're disappointed because it's a game that we like to think we should have won," UNCG coach Eddie Radwanski said. "But, we had a number of chances in the first half, whether we hit the crossbar or just couldn't put away, and if you do that, and you allow a team to hang around, they're going to get their opportunities. Credit to Fullerton, they hung in there and got two opportunities in a short period of time in the second half, and they were able to capitalize on them.

"I just felt the difference in the game was, if we put even just one of those chances in in the first half, it's a completely different game. On the road, you just need to get those breaks and take advantage of those opportunities, and unfortunately, we weren't able to do so, and we paid the price for it."

Partenheimer had a game-high six shots, with three of them on frame. Smith led Fullerton with two shots.

UNCG keeper Kelsey Kearney allowed two goals and made two saves. Santos made six stops and posted her first shutout of the season.

Kearney, Padgett and Barnekow were named to the Under Armour Invitational's all-tournament team.

Taking the field as a ranked team for the first time since 1998, the Spartans went 0-1-1 at the Under Armour Invitational after playing to a scoreless draw with 2007 NCAA champion Southern Cal on Friday.

Despite the loss, UNCG is still off to one of the best starts in school history. The year's Spartans are now one of just six squads in UNCG lore to have just one loss through their first five contests.

Sunday's contest wrapped up a season-long four-game road swing for the Spartans. UNCG is back in action on Friday, when it returns to UNCG Soccer Stadium for the first time since the season-opener on Aug. 20. The Spartans will battle the Charlotte 49ers at 7 p.m. Admission is free.

Huntington, W. Va. - Appalachian State women's soccer (2-2) suffered a 2-0 setback against tournament-host Marshall (2-1-2) on the final day of the Best Western Huntington Mall Invitational Sunday afternoon at Sam Hood Field on the campus of Marshall.

The Thundering Herd came out looking to score early, with the Herd taking their first shot less than seven minutes into the match. Senior goalkeeper Caroline Clarke (Greenwood, S.C./Greenwood Christian) made three tough saves before giving up a goal right before the end of the half.

Sophomore Hannah Coad (Alpharetta, Ga./Blessed Trinity) attempted Appalachians first shot 27:22 minutes into play, but the shot resulted into a save for Thundering Herd goalie Lindsey Kerns. Sophomore Sam McVeigh (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) followed up minutes later with a shot of her own, but the shot traveled wide. Freshman Amy Werdine (Tampa, Fla./H.B. Plant) tried one more time to score before the end of the first half off a header, but was high on the attempt.

Marshall took a 1-0 advantage into intermission.

The Apps came out of halftime looking to get on the board with a McVeigh shot, but was wide again. With only a few minutes left in the match, the Herd netted another goal to go up 2-0 and secure the victory and first place in the invitational. Junior Nicole Martinez (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) attempted one last goal before the end of regulation to cut the deficit in half, but was unsuccessful.

ASU attempted just five shots on the afternoon, compared to MU's 11.

Clarke finished the match with three saves in the loss, while Kerns notched one save in the victory.

The Mountaineers finished third behind Radford, while Iona picked up the fourth place position.

As part of the invitational, an all-tournament team was selected by the coaches. Clarke and senior Lindsay Jaffe (Weston, Fla./Cypress Bay) were picked to be part of the team.

Appalachian hits the field again on Friday, Sept. 10, hosting Coastal Carolina in their home opener from the Appalachian Soccer Complex. Action is slated to begin at 7 p.m.

Auburn 3, Western Carolina 0

AUBURN, Ala. - Western Carolina soccer (2-2) dropped a 3-0 decision at Auburn (4-1) Sunday at the AU Soccer Complex.

The Tigers pushed all three of their goals into the net in the first half of the match. Senior Catamount goalkeeper Caitlin Williams fended off 33 shots by Auburn, saving 10 shots, and allowing the three AU goals. It is Williams' second loss of the season, after Western Carolina lost 3-2 to UAB on Friday.

Western Carolina had just four shots in the match, its lowest shot output of the season. Catamounts' Laura Greb, Kayla Sedgeley, Katie Weigel and Alex Gastesi all had shots on goal in the match.

Auburn scored its first goal at the 17:03 mark when Ashley Marks hit a cross from the end line off an assist by Mary Coffred. Three minutes later, at 20:48, the Tigers Katy Frierson scored off a double assist by Gabi Rivera and Jessica Rightmer. The final Tiger score of the match happened just before the half, at 43:34, when Ashley Kotero hit a free shot from 35-yards out from an assist by Heather Havron.

Western Carolina plays its first home matches of the season, hosting the Catamount Classic. The Catamounts play Air Force at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Xavier at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Northern Colorado 2, The Citadel 1

Colorado Springs, Colo. - The Citadel Soccer was upended in the last few minutes as Northern Colorado slipped pass the Bulldogs for a 2-1 victory, crowning themselves winners of the Air Force Fall Classic on Sunday afternoon.

Defense proved to be the key in the first period for each team, as both squads came out firing early. Freshman Mariana Garcia took the first shot 59 seconds into the match but Kirstin Salminen was readily in position defending the Bears' goal. North Colorado's Ariel Cook would take the next shot at the 7:33 mark, but the kick did not convert as junior Laura Serafino waited guarding the Bulldogs' net. Eager for the score, freshman Nicole Levermann made consecutive shots at the 17:39 and 24:37 marks, however the ball went wide on the first shot and Salminen made the save on the next attempt.

Kimmie Feidler and Krystine Dalton kept Serafino on her toes as well, as she had to make back-to-back dives for the ball just seconds apart. At the 44:39 mark, Tassie Forst made the last attempt at putting the Bears on the score board but the shot went wide sending the teams into the half scoreless. Northern Colorado finished the half with a 9-5 shot advantage over The Citadel.

The second period started with the Bears in control of the match, taking the first three shots. However, at the 52:58 mark, freshman Vanessa Aponte took control of the scoreboard as she connected with the net to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. Minutes after Aponte's goal, the Bears took three consecutive shots, each sailing wide before Cook scored to tie the match at 1-1. Freshman Jillian Meyer tried extending the Bulldogs' lead at the 83:59 mark, however the header drifted wide. With less than three minutes left on the clock, Northern Colorado's Cook headed off a free kick from teammate Olivia Deadmond to snatch the match victory.

In addition to her goal, Aponte as well as Levermann concluded the match with two shots to lead The Citadel. Cook finished as the Bears' offensive leader with six shots, four on goal, to go with her two scores. Serafino played all 90 minutes for the Bulldogs and finished with nine saves, while Salminen tallied three for Northern Colorado.

"Our effort this weekend was fantastic," said head coach
Bob Winch. "We are starting to come together nicely. Our defending as a team is excellent. As long as we continue to battle, games like today will start to go our way."

The Citadel will return on the road traveling to Orangeburg, S.C. on Friday, Sept. 10 for a weekend of matches in the South Carolina State Tournament. The Bulldogs will first face Alabama State at 5 p.m. For more information on The Citadel Soccer, visit the official website of Bulldog Athletics at www.CitadelSports.com.

Alabama 2, Chattanooga 1 (OT)

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. --- In the end, it was an overtime penalty kick that gave the University of Alabama a 2-1 victory over the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in women's soccer action Sunday afternoon at the Alabama Soccer Complex.

"They didn't beat us on the field today," Chattanooga head coach J.D. Kyzer said. "We were 1-1 at the end of regulation and it was a PK that won it for them. We're coming together and getting better every game. I'm very proud of the way this team is playing."

After fighting it out to a 1-1 draw, the game went into extra time. In the 98th minute, Chattanooga (1-4) was called for a foul in the box and Rosaly Petriello booted a penalty kick past UTC's freshman keeper Taylor Mangrum (Franklin, Tenn.) for the sudden victory and her second goal of the game.

Petriello snared the Tide's (3-1) first goal in the 38th minute firing to the near post from 25 yards out.

"Taylor commands the box," Kyzer said. "She played well and does a lot of coaching out of the box. She made one mistake. The only problem is that when the keeper makes a mistake, the other team usually scores."

Alabama got off five more shots in the late minutes of the first half with just one on goal and carried a 1-0 advantage into the half.

In the second half Chattanooga got off four shots to the Tide's two before UTC freshman Kerbi Towry netted her second goal of the season to knot the game at 1-1 in the 58th minute. Junior Donna-Kay Henry (Queens Village, N.Y.) sent a cross from the end line to a streaking Towry who picked up the pass at the far post for the equalizer.

"She was on wheels," Kyzer said. "She was flying and snuck in behind the defender."

The Tide outshot Chattanooga 33-9 with 11 shots on goal. Mangrum snared nine saves in the game playing the entire game in goal. Henry had three shots, all on goal, for the Lady Mocs with an assist while Towry had two shots and a goal. Senior Kelly Downs (Hixson, Tenn.) was able to get off two shots for the Lady Mocs with one on goal.

Chattanooga's defense held off the Alabama offense with junior Danielle Barr drawing the assignment of defending the Tide's top player Victoria Frederick.

"Danielle did a really good job of keeping [Frederick] outside. She is their fastest player and she was unable to get anything done because she couldn't get past Danielle. Our whole back line is amazing. Serena [Allen], Anna [Cusick] and Danielle as well as Tayler [Shelby] and Heather [Trumbo] worked together. They were very smooth, very solid."

The Lady Mocs will return to the pitch to defend their title at the Border Classic beginning Friday night in Boiling Springs, N.C., when they take on host Gardner-Webb at 7 p.m. Results and stats will be available immediately following the game at the official website of Chattanooga athletics, GoMocs.com.

SMU 3, Davidson 0

DALLAS, Texas - Making their first trip to the state of Texas, the Davidson women's soccer team did not have the outcome they were hoping for as they dropped a 3-0 setback to Southern Methodist in their final game of the three-day trip on Sunday afternoon.

Davidson, which played at No. 7 Texas A&M on Friday, did not score a result in their two games as the Wildcats fell to 2-3 on the season. SMU ran its record to 3-1-1.

After playing well against the Aggies on Friday night, the Wildcats came out a bit sluggish in the first half against SMU and the Mustangs took advantage.

The Wildcats found themselves down 2-0 after the Mustangs netted a pair of goals less than a minute apart in the late stages of the 25th minute and just past the beginning of 26th minute. Jessica Bartol and Kristen Medeiros each scored a goal to give Southern Methodist all the scoring it would need.

The Mustangs added one more goal in the 49th minute of the second half by Shelby Redman for the final score of 3-0.

Davidson's best chance to score was in the last stages of the second half when Kelsey Krueger (Keller, Texas) pushed a ball into the six-yard box and crossed it over to Elizabeth Underwood (Atlanta, Ga.) who tried to get a touch on the ball but just missed it on the far side.

The junior tandem of Jessie Baxa (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) and Christy Carry (Dallas, Texas) each split time in goal, getting a pair of saves apiece.

Davidson was able to only get off five shots on the afternoon and it was held without a corner kick.

The Wildcats stay on the road as they head to the College of Charleston Tournament in Charleston, S.C. next weekend, Sept. 10-12. The last time the 'Cats were invited to the Cougars' tournament they took home the tourney title with wins over Southeastern Conference schools LSU and Vanderbilt. This year, Davidson will face Presbyterian and Iowa.
