Spartans Set 2010-11 Wrestling Slate

GREENSBORO, N.C. - UNCG head wrestling coach Jason Loukides announced his schedule for the upcoming 2010-11 season on Tuesday afternoon. The schedule for the reigning Southern Conference Tournament Champions includes five tournaments, including the UNCG Southern Scuffle, as well as five homes duals, highlighted by Wisconsin who finished in fourth at the 2010 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.

"I am very happy with how the schedule turned out," said Loukides. "I am excited about the opportunities that a tough schedule provides our student-athletes. We have added a home match against nationally-ranked Wisconsin, the Hoosier Duals, and the Virginia Duals to an already challenging schedule. Two excellent tournaments in the Cliff Keen Invitational and the Southern Scuffle both prepare our athletes and provide opportunities for them to move up the rankings."

The Spartans kick off the season by holding a pair of exhibitions in Fleming Gymnasium. The team will hold an intrasquad Newcomers Exhibition on Oct. 20 before having their annual Blue vs. Gold Wrestle-offs on Oct. 27.

The team will begin actual competition at the Virginia Tech Open to begin the year on Nov. 7, followed by the NC State Open the next weekend, Nov. 14.

UNCG will then host its first home dual match of the season as the Spartans host Wisconsin on Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. The Badgers finished in fourth place at nationals last season and junior Andrew Howe won the 165 pound National Championship as well.

Once again, UNCG will travel to the prestigious Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Dec. 3-4 to begin the month. The Spartans will then have 25 days off before hosting the UNCG Southern Scuffle on Dec. 29-30 at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center.

The Spartans then hit the road to begin January as they will travel to George Mason for a dual on Jan. 5. UNCG will then compete at the Virginia Duals on Jan. 7-8.

UNCG will begin the Southern Conference portion of its schedule on Jan. 16 at Davidson before traveling to The Citadel on Jan. 22. The Spartans have their first home SoCon dual match on Jan. 26 against Appalachian State at 7 p.m. The team will also compete in January at the Appalachian State Open on Jan. 29.

The team will begin February with a nonconference dual at home against Liberty on Feb. 2. The Spartans will host their final SoCon dual of the year as Chattanooga comes to down on Feb. 5 for a 2 p.m. match.
