McFadden, Elon Take Top Honors at Sea Trail Tournament
SUNSET BEACH, N.C. - Tara McFadden posted a one-under-par 215 (73-69-73) after three rounds to take an eight-stroke advantage and the top medalist honors while also leading her Elon squad to the team title at the Sea Trail Women's Intercollegiate. Elon finished with a three-day score of 894 (299-295-300). Morgan Jackson of Jacksonville finished second with a score of 223 (75-76-72), helping her team to the second-place spot with a score of 911 (311-302-298). Appalachian State placed third with a score of 918 (301-310-307) behind the lead of Yue Xu. Xu finished third with a score of 224 (75-74-75).
Samford finished fourth with a score of 926 (311-305-310) and Presbyterian place fifth with a final score of 935 (322-308-305).
Elon's Diana Davis posted a 74 on Sunday to finish fourth with a three-day score of 225 (73-78-74) while Virginia Mayer finished tied for seventh (76-75-76 - 227) and Martyna Mierzwa posted a score of 230 (77-73-80) to finish tied for 14th. Shannon Prunty finished in 25th place with a score of 236 (80-79-77). Playing as an individual, Meghan Green finished tied for 18th with a score of 233 (81-77-75) while Lauren Lebak finished tied at 39th with a 246 (84-86-76).
Kristen Boettcher of Jacksonville finished tied for fifth with a final score of 226 (77-73-76). Jessica Williams finished tied for 14th with a score of 230 (80-76-74) and Melissa Magdor finished 17th with a 232 (79-77-76).
Appalachian State's Rumbidzai Masamvu finished tied for seventh (75-75-77 - 227) while Keri Dice finished tied for 18th with a 233 (76-81-76) and Kristina Boo placed in a tie for 28th with a score of 238 (75-84-79).
Tiana Jones of South Carolina State finished tied for fifth after shooting a two-under 70 on Sunday (80-76-70 - 226). Kasay Holbrook of Presbyterian (78-75-74) and Old Dominion's Sam Morrell (74-78-75) finished tied for seventh with Masamvu and Mayer with a score of 227.
WCU Women's Golf Third, Sundh Sixth at UNCG Starmount Fall Classic
Monday's second round scheduled for a Noon shotgun start
Brown Summitt, N.C. - Led by an opening round one-over par 73 by senior Josefine Sundh, Western Carolina's women's golf team stands third, three strokes off a two-way tie for first at the UNCG Starmount Fall Classic being played at the par-72, 6,323-yard Bryan Park Golf Course. The players barely beat rain moving into the area on Sunday with several groups playing their final hole in a light shower.
The tournament was moved from the Starmount Forest Country Club to the Bryan Park Golf Course Players Course because of course problems over the last several weeks at Starmount. The shotgun start of the second round is set for Noon on Monday. However, forecasters are calling for more than an inch of rain on Sunday evening through Monday.
North Carolina State and fellow Atlantic Coast Conference member, Maryland, posted identical rounds of 302 on Sunday to stand tied atop the leader board. Western Carolina is three strokes back at 305, with East Tennessee State and Penn State both tied for fourth, three strokes in arrears at 308.
Other Southern Conference schools in the field include UNC Greensboro (t-8th) and Furman (t-11th).
All told, nine teams are within nine shots of the leaders entering Monday's second round.
For the Catamounts, Sundh stands in a two-way tie for sixth-place, three strokes off the pace. Sophomore Malin Jansson is tied for 12th with a three-over 75 on Sunday, while junior Rachel Nelson is tied for 17th after shooting five-over par, 77. Rounding out WCU's scorers were junior Blaire Minter and redshirt senior Tiffany Schisler, both in at eight-over, 80, and tied for 43rd.

SUNSET BEACH, N.C. --- The Samford University women's golf team registered its best finish of the 2010 fall season Sunday as the Bulldogs placed fourth at the annual Sea Trail Women's Intercollegiate hosted by Elon University. Samford carded a total team score of 926 (311-305-310) at the prestigious 10-day event held at the Sea Trail Golf Resort.

True freshman Alex Jasper tallied an 18th-place finish in the individual standings. The Bulldogs' native of Clarksville, Tenn., carded a 76 on Sunday to finish the tournament with a total score of 233 (77-80-76). Samford's Kayla Turner was the most consistent player on the squad this weekend. She placed 22nd with a mark of 234 (78-78-78).
The Bulldogs' Sarah Butts finished one stroke behind Turner at 235 (78-76-81), while Savannah Schubert tallied a three-day score of 240 (82-76-82).
The Samford University women's golf team will next be in action Oct. 8-10 as the Bulldogs travel to Daytona Beach, Fla., for the annual Xavier Invitational to be held at the LPGA International Golf Course.
Women's Golf Finishes Third at Sea Trail Intercollegiate
SUNSET BEACH, N.C. - Yue Xu shot a consistent 75-74-75=224 (+8) to finish third out of 54 golfers and paced Appalachian State University women's golf to a third-place team finish at the Sea Trail Intercollegiate over the weekend. The Mountaineers carded a collective 301-310-307=918 (+54) at the 10-team event.
Fellow sophomore Rumbidzai Masamvu also finished in the top 10 with a 75-75-77=227 (+11) for seventh overall while senior Kerri Dice finished in a tie for 18th place at 76-81-76=233 (+17).
Kristina Boo shot a 75 84 79 238 (+22) for 28th place and Mimi Burke improved each round with a 84-80-79=243 (+27) for 34th place.
Competing individually, Appalachian newcomer Brittany Zachrich ranked 39th at the event with a 84-81-81=246 (+30).
Host Elon took home the team title with an 894 (+30) while the Phoenix's Tara McFadden earn medalist honors at 215 (-1).
Jacksonville University took over second place for the Apps on Sunday with a 911 (+47) while Samford placed fourth, eight strokes behind the Mountaineers.
Also from the Southern Conference, The Citadel finished seventh at 965 (+101).
ASU has a pair of weekends off before traveling to the Boscobel Invitational at Pendleton, S.C. on October 9.
Mocs in 10th at Golfweek Conference Challenge
Senior Emma de Groot led Chattanooga ahead of Tennessee and Texas A&M in first round
VAIL, Colo. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's golf team opened the Golfweek Conference Challenge with a 15-over par round of 303 to stand in 10th-place at Red Sky Golf Club on its Fazio Course. The Mocs are one stroke ahead of Tennessee and four clear of Texas A&M.
Emma de Groot (Coffs Harbour, New South Wales, Australia) led UTC with a one-over par 73. She carded four birdies against five bogeys in the Mocs' second tournament of the season and is tied for 17th.
Fellow senior Christine Wolf (Igls, Austria) parred 15 of her first 16 holes with the lone blemish being a double bogey on the par four 11th hole, her second of the day. After a bogey at eight, Wolf closed with a birdie two on nine for her 74.
Maria Juliana Loza (Bucaramanga, Colombia) was two over through her first eight holes before making her turn at plus one with a birdie four on 18. She played holes one through nine at plus four to shoot 77 (+5).
Freshman Yushira Budhram (Johannesburg, South Africa) and Jordan Britt (Dayton, Tenn.) played with a stroke of each other. Budhram's 79 (+7) was one shot better than Britt's 80 to round out the team scores.
Chattanooga tees off at 10 a.m. (MDT), and is paired with Tennessee and Texas A&M. The Mocs will be led off the 10th tee by Britt who is followed by Budhram (10:09), Loza (10:18), Wolf (10:27) and de Groot (10:36).

Sunset Beach, N.C. - The Citadel Golf team competed in their second tournament of the 2010 fall season this weekend at Sea Trail Golf Resort in Sunset Beach, N.C. The Bulldogs finished the three-day tournament in seventh place out of 10 teams shooting a total score of 965.
Freshman Erica Pellegrini lead the Bulldogs for the second consecutive week, firing a team low 76 on Sunday to finish tied for 26th place. Pellegrini concluded the tournament 21 over par, (81-80-76), while senior teammate Sheri Rockefeller finished right behind her, tied for 28th place (79-80-79). Junior Alanna-Jean Keith (82-80-79), junior Bree Baumgartner (84-80-88), and senior Christine Clark (90-81-85) also competed for the Bulldogs this weekend.
Southern Conference foe Elon University ended the match in first place firing a team score of 894 (+30), while Appalachian State ended the weekend in third place. Elon's Tara McFadden finished first overall posting a 73 on Sunday to finish the weekend one under par and eight strokes better than Jacksonville State's Morgan Jackson (+7).

Cougars Finish 17th at Mason Rudolph
CHARLESTON, S.C. - The College of Charleston women's golf team fired a 311 in the third round to finish with a 921, putting the Cougars in 17th at the conclusion of the Mason Rudolph Women's Championship held Sept. 24-26 at the Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn. #2 LSU shot a 283 for a combined 54-hole score of 843 to take the two-stroke win over #20 Purdue.
The tournament consisted of 15 of the nation's top 50 teams and seven of the nation's top 10.
Finishing tied for third behind the Tigers and Boilermakers were #3 Southern California and #10 UCLA, who both finished with an 851. Rounding out the top five was #11 California with a three-day total of 856.
California's Pia Halbig was 13-under par for the tournament to take individual medalist honors with a 203 after firing a 68 today. Michelle Shin, of Wake Forest finished second with a 206.
Leigh Whittaker (Baden-Baden, Germany) led the Cougars, tying for 54th with a 223 after shooting a par-73 in the third round. Ainhoa Nogales (Pozuelo de Alarcon, Spain) tied for 72nd with a 228 an tied for 83rd was Anna Martin (Easley, S.C.) with a 234. Kathryn Miranda (Lexington, S.C.), with a 242, was tied for 88th, while Vanessa Koechli (Greer, S.C.) finished 92nd with a 248.
The Cougars next travel to State College, Pa., Oct. 2-3 for the Nittany Lion Invitational at the University Club.

UNCG sits eighth after opening round in UNCG Starmount Fall Classic
BROWNS SUMMIT, N.C. - UNCG's trio of Courtney Taylor, Lizzy Bundy and Erica Creed each carded opening rounds of 77 on Sunday at Bryan Park's Players Course to help UNCG to a team score of 311 in the opening round of the UNCG Starmount Fall Classic.
North Carolina State and Maryland are tied atop the team standings at 302, followed by Western Carolina at 305. Nine teams are within nine shots of the leaders entering Monday's second round.
The players barely beat rain moving into the area on Sunday. Several groups had to play their final hole in a light shower, but the rain held off for most of the day. The forecast isn't as fortunate for Monday with more than an inch of rain forecast for both Sunday night and Monday.
Stetson's Alex Buelow sits atop the individual leaderboard after an opening round 70. She and NC State's Brittany Marchand were the only two golfers to record sub-par rounds on Sunday. Marchand is one shot back of Buelow, who jumped into the lead late with an eagle on her next to last hole. Buelow, who began her day at No. 4 in the shotgun format, eagled No. 2, a 491-yard par 5, to finish her day at two-under par and in the lead.
Bundy carded two birdies and nine pars on the day, playing the front side in 39 and the back in 38 to finish at five-over par. Taylor, who started on No. 2 in the shotgun format, had one birdie and 11 pars in her round. She played the front side in 39 and the back in 38. Creed, who also started at No. 2 in the shotgun format, did not record a birdie on the day. However, she did have 13 pars in her round, playing the front in 40 and the back in 37.
Monday's second round is slated for a 12 noon shotgun start, weather permitting. UNCG's groups will begin on hole Nos. 8, 9 and 10.
Furman's Kenoyer Cards First Round 72, Holds Third Place At UNCG Fall Classic
Greensboro, N.C. - Senior Stefanie Kenoyer fired an even-par 72 to hold a share of third place after 18 holes at the UNCG Starmount Fall Classic at the par-72 Bryan Park Players Course on Sunday.
The Lighthouse Point, Fla., native, who started on No. 8, carded an eagle at the par five No. 2 and a birdie at the par five No. 4 to forge a three-way tie for third place at even-par with Emily Ransone of Penn State and Jessie Hollandsworth of Maryland. Alex Buelow of Stetson grabbed the first round lead at two-under 70 while Brittany Marchand of North Carolina State is in second place after an opening round 71.
Furman's Laura Wearn, Liz Wendt and Alexa Rancourt each shot nine-over 81 as the Paladins settled for 11th place after 18 holes shooting 315. North Carolina State and Maryland are tied for the lead at 14-over 302 while Western Carolina is three strokes back in third place.
Second round play is scheduled to begin with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. on Monday with final round action set for a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
