SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Samford junior goalkeeper Alyssa Whitehead has been chosen as the Southern Conference women's soccer player of the week for all matches from September 6-12.
Whitehead was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2010 Samford Invitational on Sunday after she led the Bulldogs to the championship of the four-team, two-day competition. In Samford's identical 2-0 victories against Kennesaw State and Tennessee Tech, Whitehead tallied complete-game shutouts in each win and made a number of key saves.
The Bulldogs' 6-foot-3 native of Hattiesburg, Miss., has registered four straight shutouts and has not allowed a goal in the past 381:06 minutes, dating back to a 2-2 draw with Mercer on Aug. 27.
Other Nominees: Chelsey Stark (Elon), Deprise Brazel (Davidson), Jessica Smith (Furman), Sloane Levin (College of Charleston), Amy Loughran (The Citadel), Jessi Gulledge (UNCG), Taylor Mangrum (Chattanooga) and Megan Wellborn (Wofford).
