Furman's Wearn Grabs Second Round Cougar Classic Lead; Paladins Move Up To 10th Place

Hanahan, S.C. - Furman's Laura Wearn totaled seven birdies to fire a second round 69 and grab a share of the lead at four-under par on Monday in the Cougar Classic at the par-72, 6,210-yard Yeamans Hall Golf Club in Hanahan, S.C.

Wearn (71-69=140), a sophomore, birdied three holes on the front nine to shoot a two-under 34 and carded four birdies on the back nine to overcome a double bogey and shoot a one-under 35.  The Charlotte, N.C., native enters Tuesday's final round in a tie with North Carolina's Courtney Gunter (69-71=140) at four-under.  The Tarheel's Jackie Chang (72-69=141) is one stroke behind in third place after 36 holes.

Sophomore Alexa Rancourt posted a second round 75 and junior Stefanie Kenoyer posted a 76 to help Furman (304-297=601) climb from 14th place to 10th place with a nine-over 297 on Monday.  North Carolina (285-285=570) continues to pace the field and stands nine strokes ahead of second place South Carolina (291-288=579).  Mississippi and Oklahoma are tied for third entering the final round.

The tournament conlcudes on Tuesday morning with a shotgun start scheduled for 8:30.

Cougars Eighth at Cougar Classic

HANAHAN, S.C. - Leigh Whittaker (Baden-Baden, Germany) fired a 74 in the second round to finish the day with a 147, and lead the College of Charleston women's golf team to eighth with a 595 at the Cougar Classic being held Sept. 12-14 at Yeamans Hall Golf Club in Hanahan, S.C.  North Carolina maintained its lead after firing a three-under par 285 for a 570, putting the Tar Heels nine strokes ahead of second-place South Carolina.  UNC posted 12 birdies on the day with Jackie Chang leading the way with four.

"We've had two very good rounds," said Head Women's Golf Coach Jamie Futrell.  "With a solid finish we can have a great start to the season."

Mississippi was the big mover of the day, jumping from a tie at 10th to a tie for third with a 284 second-round.  Ole Miss sits tied with Oklahoma with a 584.  Rounding out the top five is Minnesota with a 585.

North Carolina's Courtney Gunter, who led after the first round, is tied for first with a 140 after firing a 71 in today's round.  Furman's Laura Wearn shot a 69 today to move from third to a tie at the top spot.

Whittaker finished with three birdies and just four bogies to tie for 20th with a 147.  After ending the front nine with a double bogey and a bogey, Kathryn Miranda (Lexington, S.C.) recovered with two birdies on the back nine to end the round with a 75 and a tie for 24th with a 148.  Ainhoa Nogales (Pozuelo de Alarcon, Spain) finished tied for 51st after posting an 81 in the second round to total a 152 in 36 holes.

Katharina Boehm (Poing, Germany) recovered from an 80 in the first round with a one-over par 73 in the second to sit tied for 58th.  She posted two birdies and just three bogeys in today's round.  Tied for 90th is Vanessa Koechli (Greer, S.C.) who improved her performance by six strokes with a 76 in today's action.  Anna Martin (Easley, S.C.) is competing for the Cougars as an individual and is tied for 99th with a 160.

UNCG women's golf sits in 18th after two rounds at Cougar Classic

HANAHAN, S.C. - UNCG sophomore Courtney Taylor recorded the Spartans' low round of the day on Monday with a 77 at the Cougar Classic, hosted by College of Charleston at Yeamans Hall.

Taylor overcame a sluggish start to card her 77. She began the day with a bogey and a double-bogey, but bounced back with a birdie at No. 3. She finished the front side of the course in 37 and closed out the back side with a birdie at No. 18.

The Spartans shot 318 on the day and dropped to 18th place with a score of 618 after 36 holes. North Carolina leads the team standings with a score of 570, nine shots better than South Carolina and 14 ahead of Mississippi and Oklahoma.

North Carolina's Courtney Gunter and Furman's Laura Wearn are tied atop the individual leaderboard. Gunter began the day as the leader, but Wearn's second-round 69 pulled her into a tie. North Carolina's Jackie Chang is one shot back.

The final round of the 21-team tournament gets underway with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. The Spartans will begin in groups on hole Nos. 13, 14, 15 and 16.
