College of Charleston 6, Presbyterian 1
MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - The College of Charleston women's soccer team dominated Presbyterian in the closing match of The College of Charleston Tournament at Patriots Point on Sunday afternoon.
The win improves the Cougars' season record to 3-4-0. Presbyterian falls to 1-5-0.
The Cougars dominated virtually all facets of the game and maintained possession for a vast majority of the contest. The Cougars posted 24 shot attempts and put 16 on goal.
"It was a really great day for the Cougars," said head coach Christian Michner. "We were able to create a lot of dangerous scoring opportunities and were fortunate to have the composure in front of goal to finish on several of those chances."
Sarah Schaidle (Simpsonville, S.C.) got CofC started early with the opening goal in the third minute. McCallie Jones (Charlotte, N.C.) got a throw deep into the box by way of a crowd-exciting summersault throw in. Schaidle possessed the ball and fired into the keeper before Annie Pease (Marietta, Ga.) gained the rebound and got the ball back to Schaidle who capitalized on her second attempt.
Jones executed another flip-throw in the 18th minute and Pease flicked a header to the far side of the box where a wide-open Maryam Buazza (Katy, Texas) controlled the ball and booted it into the open net for her fourth goal of the season.
PC countered just 50 seconds later with a goal from Stephanie Aaron to cut the score to 2-1. Tori Lopez gained an assist on the play.
The Cougars regrouped after allowing the goal and continued to dominate possession. Megan Hilbert (Apex, N.C.) then extended the lead back to two goals in the 38th minute. Hilbert made a long run down the left-hand side of the field before chipping the ball over the charging keeper.
The Cougars went into the locker room at the half leading 3-1 on the scoreboard and 13-1 in shots.
The Cougars remained aggressive in the opening minutes of the second half. The Blue Hose were pinned deep in their own end and tried to clear the ball out but Sloane Levin (Hamburg, Mich.) intercepted the attempt and fired a perfect shot into the upper corner of the goal in the 48th minute.
Just 76 seconds of clock time later, Levin controlled a botched punt off the PC keeper's boat and struck again in a virtually-identical fashion to move the score to 5-1.
After Levin's pair of quick goals, the Cougars were contempt with controlling the ball in the middle third of the field for much of the second half. CofC then capitalized again on a set piece from the corner in the 76th minute. Morgan Benz (Clifton, Va.) sent the ball into the box where Kelly Gautreaux (Mandeville, La.) headed the ball into the open net.
At the conclusion of the game, Benz, Schaidle and Hope Atkinson (Rumson, N.J.) were named to the eleven-member all-tournament team.
"I was really impressed by our commitment to focus on our game over the entire 90 minutes," said Michner. "This team is ready for the road ahead." Congratulations to Morgan, Hope and Sarah for being named to the all-tournament team, a well-deserved honor."
The Cougars will now take to the road to face Georgia on Friday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m.
Samford 2, Tennessee Tech 0
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The Samford University soccer team earned its second straight 2-0 win Sunday as the Bulldogs defeated the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles in the championship match of the 2010 Samford Invitational held at Bulldog Field. Samford defenders Leah Leppert and Sabbath McKiernan-Allen both scored goals in the victory.
"Sunday games are always tough for us, especially after very competitive Friday night games," said Samford head coach Todd Yelton. "We are very happy to get the win, but I wish we would have been a little better in front of goal, but at the end of the day, we're happy to get the result."
With the win, Samford (4-2-1) concluded its 2010 home tournament with an unblemished 2-0 record. On Friday, the Bulldogs opened play in the four-team, two-day competition with a 2-0 victory against Kennesaw State. Samford extended its winning streak to four-consecutive matches Sunday and remained undefeated at home this season with a 4-0-1 record.
In the third-place match held prior to Samford's victory, Kennesaw State rallied for a 2-1 win against Georgia Southern. Kennesaw State finished the tournament with a 1-1 record, while Georgia Southern placed fourth at 0-2.
Samford concluded its early-season, five-match homestand with a 4-0-1 record. After playing to a 2-2 draw with Mercer on Aug. 27, the Bulldogs have rattled off consecutive shutout victories against Southern Miss 4-0, UAB 1-0, Kennesaw State 2-0 and Tennessee Tech (2-5), 2-0.
For their outstanding play in the 2010 Samford Invitational, the Bulldogs' Alyssa Whitehead, Hilary Samuels, Leppert and McKiernan-Allen were all named to the All-Tournament Team. Whitehead, Samford's 6-foot-3 All-Southern Conference goalkeeper has recorded four straight shutouts and has not allowed a goal since the second half against Mercer.
With Sunday's loss, Tennessee Tech had its two-match winning streak snapped. Prior to facing Samford, the Golden Eagles had rattled off consecutive victories against UNC Asheville and Georgia Southern. Tennessee Tech's Kerri Reid, Leigh Heffner and Kris Cambron were all named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Bulldogs improved their all-time record against Tennessee Tech to 8-2-1. Samford holds a six-match winning streak against its former Ohio Valley Conference rival and Tennessee Tech's last win in the series occurred Oct. 30, 2002, in a 3-2 decision held in Cookeville, Tenn.
"Tennessee Tech is a tough team and (Head coach) Daniel (Brizard) is doing a very good job with that program," Yelton said. "That's the best Tennessee Tech team that we've ever faced and they made it very difficult to score and their players compete. To get a positive result today was our key goal and we're just glad to have it."
Samford jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in Sunday's championship match as Leppert tallied her first goal of the season at 12:25. On the game-winning score, Leppert took a direct kick from approximately 30 yards out on the right side of the field and rifled a hooking shot into the top right-hand corner of the net.
The Bulldogs' second goal of the match was also scored on a set-piece. Just over five minutes into the second half, McKiernan-Allen notched her first goal of the season as she headed in a corner kick.
On the play, senior Paige Lanter sent a high corner kick from the left side into the box and McKiernan-Allen skied over a Tennessee Tech defender to head the ball into the back of the net. Lanter was credited with an assist on the play.
"Jay (Yelton) spends a lot of time with our players working on set-pieces and we recently put in a few more wrinkles, so we were really happy to see that pay off today," said Yelton. "So, I have to give full credit to Jay and our players for organizing that.
"We're a young squad and we just want to get better and better as the year goes on. Hopefully, by the time we get to conference play, we'll be starting to peak a bit and we just want to keep working hard, rolling up our sleeves and getting better. We just need to try to keep this positive momentum going."
The Samford University soccer team will next be in action Friday at 7 p.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs travel to Auburn, Ala., for an in-state matchup against the Auburn Tigers. The non-conference duel will be held at the Auburn Soccer Complex.
Chattanooga 1, USC Upstate 0
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's soccer team posted a 1-0 win over USC Upstate Sunday afternoon on the final day of the Border Classic hosted by Gardner-Webb.
Of Chattanooga's seven games this season, it was the sixth decided by just one goal. Sophomore Becca Smith (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) has seen little action this year as she has recovered from a preseason injury, but made the most of her playing time Sunday with her fourth career game winning goal. Sophomore Hayley Sloan sent a corner kick into the pack in front on the goal and Smith flicked it on with a header in the 72nd minute to move Chattanooga to 2-5 on the year.
"We're a much better team than our 2-5 record indicates," Chattanooga head coach J.D. Kyzer said. "We still have some things to work out before the [Southern] conference season gets underway and we're doing those things."
The Lady Mocs outshot USC Upstate (1-6) 25-11 with an 11-4 shots on goal advantage. UTC keeper, freshman Taylor Mangrum, got the starting nod and made four saves on the day and recorded her first shutout. Upstate's keeper Collins nabbed 10 saves for the Spartans.
"Taylor has been very consistent for us," Kyzer said. "We are fortunate enough to have two very capable goal keepers and she's on right now, playing very well. She does a good job of being vocal and managing the box."
The win was UTC's second over Kyzer's alma mater, but was a bit more even as opposed to last year's 8-0 romp. The Spartans are led by first-year head coach Renee Lopez.
"We were on them today, but they are a much better team than we played last year," Kyzer said. "It's my alma mater and I'm really proud of them. They won their first game Friday night and they were really jacked up and excited."
Chattanooga will return to action with a road game against the University of Tennessee at Knoxville Sunday afternoon.
Appalachian State 1, Longwood 0
BOONE, N.C.- Freshman Amy Werdine (Tampa, Fla./H.B. Plant) found the back of the net off a corner kick by junior Sydney Hill (Alpharetta, Ga./Chattahoochee) in the first period and that was all Appalachian State women's soccer (3-3) needed to seal the victory against Longwood (4-4) on Sunday afternoon at the Appalachian Soccer Complex.
The match turned out to be a physical one for the Mountaineers with ASU and Longwood exchanging fouls before Hill got a shot off of her own 18:22 into play, but it was wide.
Longwood marched down the field and managed to get a shot in by Dylan Spicker, but it was wide, as well.
It was then that Werdine came in and scored her first goal of the season at the 30:20 mark, the teams sixth on the season.
Appalachian continued to hold their own during the second half of action and did not allow the Lancers to get on the board, giving the Black and Gold their second shutout of the season.
Senior Caroline Clarke (Greenwood, S.C./Greenwood Christian) evened her record at 3-3 and notched five saves on the afternoon.
"It was not our best match, but we took the necessary steps to win," said ASU head coach Sarah Strickland. "They (Longwood) were a very competitive team and played a style that we were not accustomed to, but I was proud of the way the girls got on the board early and battled to preserve that lead. The character of a team is shown when you find different ways to win."
The Mountaineers continue their homestand on Friday, September 17, against Gardner-Webb with action from the Appalachian Soccer Complex starting at 7 p.m.
Elon 2, Liberty 0
ELON, N.C. - The Elon women's soccer team extended its winning streak to five straight games with a 2-0 shutout of the visiting Liberty Flames in Sunday afternoon soccer action from Rudd Field. The win streak ties Elon's longest ever during its 11-year Division I history. The Phoenix improved to 5-1 overall while Liberty fell to 1-3-2 on the season.
"We played really well today," commented Elon head coach Chris Neal. "This was probably the most professional approach we have had all year. Liberty is a good team - the defending Big South champions - so it was good to get this victory."
The Phoenix was dominating in its offensive third of the field, getting off 19 shots compared to only six by Liberty in the contest. Elon forced Liberty keeper Ashley Nyhold to make nine saves in 90 minutes of action.
Elon got on the board in the 24th minute as forward Brittany Hallberg netted the fourth goal of her final season. Following a corner kick, freshman Chelsey Stark touched the ball to Hallberg who cleaned up the loose ball in the box. The assist was Stark's second of the year.
Holding a one-goal lead after the break, rookie Kimmie Krauss netted her third career goal to give Elon an extra cushion. Senior Alanna Winsper took a shot from the right side of the field that was deflected away by Nyhold. The ball went back to Krauss who drilled the shot from about 15 yards out into the far corner of the net at 51:53.
The shutout was Elon's third of the season as Kristen Haney earned the clean slate with four saves in the victory. This was the Phoenix's first victory over Liberty since Elon defeated the Flames in the 1999 Big South Championship game. The last time Elon won five of its first six games was in 1995.
Elon will be on the road for its next four games, beginning with a battle at Longwood on Friday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m.
Wofford 3, UNC Asheville 2
Asheville, N.C. - The Wofford women's soccer team won their second straight, with a victory on the road against UNC-Asheville. After the Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead in the second half, the Terriers rallied together to score two late goals with 15 minutes left in the match. The final after regulation was a 3-2 result, improving Wofford to a 4-2 record on the season. The Bulldogs drop to 0-5 on the year.
The women's squad flew out of the gates early, with the first goal being scored in the first 58 seconds of play by freshman sensation, Emily Bougas. The score gives Bougas four goals total on the season.
Wofford kept applying pressure to the UNC-Asheville goal with shots from Anne Phillips and Alex Kachulis throughout the next ten minutes of play, but both attempts sailed wide.
In the 28th minute, Wofford goalkeeper Erika Christensen made a critical save against a shot from Leilani Halkiotis. UNCA's goalkeeper returned the favor with a save of her own against a shot bulleted from Nikki Siebert a couple minutes later.
With five minutes left in the first half, the Bulldog's Chole McCleary-Small slipped a goal in with an assist by Lelani Halkiotis.
Siebert nearly put a go-ahead goal in with 22 seconds to spare before the halftime whistle, but Megan Dent saved the attempt.
At the end of the first half, Wofford accounted for sevent shots and two corner kicks. Christen was able to save three Bulldog shots in the first half.
Starting the second half, the Bulldog's took a quick offensive advantage, with a pair of shots and corners attempted in the first five minutes of play. Eventually Halkiotis pushed a shot in, taking a 2-1 lead over the Terriers.
The women's team was able to steal the momentum back in the 71st minute with the equalizing goal from midfielder Alex Kachulis. The goal came from a corner kick taken by Jewel Kawamoto. The header gave the freshman her second goal of the year and Kawamoto her first assist on the season.
Four minutes later, Megan Wellborn rebounded a ball that was trickling around the 6' box into the back of the net. The finish was set up by a well-placed corner kick from Kawamoto. The finish gives Wellborn her first game-winning goal of her career.
The Bulldogs attempted to tie the game up in the last ten minutes of play on a couple of occasions, but the Terrier defense and Christensen held strong for the 3-2 win.
Wofford tallied 14 shots throughout the afternoon. Ten of the shots were on frame, giving the Terriers a 71 percent shots on goal average. The final two goals came from corner kicks by Kawamoto, but only one counted as an assist. Siebert led the team in shots (3) and shots on goal (3), and four different Terriers accounted for two shots apiece (Wellborn, Kachulis, Bougas, and Maggie O'Brien). Christensen totaled for four saves in the match.
The women's soccer teams looks for their third straight win next Sunday, Sept. 19, against Converse College. The match will start at 2:00 pm at home on Snyder Field.

Iowa 3, Davidson 1
CHARLESTON, S.C. < All-tournament team pick freshman Deprise Brazel (San Diego, Calif.) netted her third goal of the weekend, but the Davidson Wildcats were unable to halt the Iowa Hawkeyes¹ winning streak in falling 3-1 on the final day of the College of Charleston women¹s soccer tournament on Sunday.
Iowa earned the tournament title with 2-0 and 4-0 wins over host CofC and Davidson to run its record to 6-1 as it continued its six-game winning streak. Five of the six wins have been shutouts. For Davidson (3-4), it was its first loss in the tournament after taking home the title in 2007.

Davidson settled down and held the Hawkeyes scoreless the rest of the half.

Brazel broke up the shutout for Davidson and capped off a solid weekend for herself, with a goal 18 seconds into the 89th minute. After fellow classmate Tori Krause (Cary, N.C.) got off a shot, the ball was loose and there was a scramble for it. The forward gathered in the rebound, controlled the ball and knocked it through for her third score of the season. Two days prior, Brazel had her first career two-goal collegiate game in a win over Presbyterian.
For her excellent weekend effort, Brazel was named to the all-tournament team along with senior Allison Drutchas (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) as the two represented Davidson on the team. Drutchas registered her third assist of the season on Friday night against the Blue Hose.

Lipscomb 3, The Citadel 0
Orangeburg, S.C. - Lipscomb's three goals in the first half were enough to give them the 3-0 victory against The Citadel Soccer team in a close battle in Orangeburg, S.C. on Sunday afternoon. The Citadel dropped to 2-3-1 on the season while Lipscomb improved to 2-5.
The Lady Bisons set the tone kicking the first goal 19 minutes into the match as Tatjana Shirley fired into an open net on a pass from Kelsey Reiman.
