Sunday Men's Soccer Recaps

UNCG 2, Richmond 0

ELON, N.C. - Aaron Reifschneider and Adam Shore both scored their first collegiate goal and Peyton Ford logged his first shutout of the season as UNCG defeated Richmond, 2-0, at the Elon Classic on Sunday afternoon.

With the win, the Spartans moved back to .500 on the year at 2-2-0. Richmond dropped to 1-2-1 on the year with its second straight setback.

"Obviously we are happier with this outcome," said UNCG interim head coach Justin Maullin. "I thought we did a much better job of playing together as a team this afternoon. That was something we talked a lot about at practice yesterday and again before today's match."

UNCG came out aggressive and jumped out to an early 1-0 lead. Reifschneider, a freshman from Frisco, Texas, hit a shot from 12 yards out for an unassisted tally to give the Spartans the early advantage.

UNCG outshot Richmond 6-1 in the opening half and controlled play for most of the first 45 minutes.

Midway through the second half, Shore provided some insurance. Matt Strine served the ball into Shore from near midfield. Shore, a redshirt freshman from Summerfield, N.C. who saw extended field time on Sunday due to several injuries, made a brief run through the defense and then tucked the ball just inside the far post from 15 yards out. The tally at 65:59 made it a 2-0 game.

Ford, a redshirt sophomore from Jamestown, N.C., recorded one save in logging the shutout. It was his first shutout this season and the fourth of his career.

UNCG wound up with a 13-7 advantage in shots and a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks on the afternoon.

The Spartans return home to begin a four-match homestand on Wednesday. UNCG will play host to William & Mary on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.

Furman 2, Stetson 1 (2 OT)

Greenville, S.C. -- Brooks Duff curled a shot into the upper lefthand corner from 28 yards out in the 105th minute to help Furman down Stetson 2-1 and claim the Diadora/Spinx Furman Invitational title on Sunday afternoon at Stone Soccer Stadium.

The win gave Furman a perfect 2-0 record in the tournament and improved the Paladins to 3-1-0 on the season.  Stetson dropped to 2-1-0.

Stetson outshot the Paladins 17-8 for the game, but managed just a 7-5 edge in shots on goal.  Furman held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.  Kann stopped four shots to earn the victory for Furman and benefited from two saves off of the line by his teammates, including one by tournament MVP Fabien Vorbe early in the first half.  Andreas Schnabl recorded three saves in the loss for Stetson.

GREENVILLE, S.C. - The College of Charleston men's soccer team picked up its first win of the season with a convincing 3-1 victory over Detroit Mercy in CofC's final game in the Diadora/Spinx Furman Invitational at Stone Soccer Stadium.

"I was proud of the way our players responded this weekend," said head coach Ralph Lundy. "In both the Stetson and Detroit matches we increased our movement in the attack and as a result, created a ton of chances."

The teams battled through an even first half until Francis Twohig (St. Simon's Island, Ga.) elevated the Cougars with a goal in the 33rd minute. He controlled an entry pass off a corner kick from Joey De Mare (Chapin, S.C.) and scored to the near post from eight yards away.

The score was still 1-0 in the 56th minute when Twohig found the net once again. This time, he struck from 26 yards to the right of the keeper with Sean De Silva (Port of Spain, Trinidad) picking up an assist on the play.

Ya Ya Toure got Detroit back into the match in the 67th minute with an unassisted goal from the left side of the box.

The Cougars thwarted any potential comeback efforts moments later when Sean Bateau (Port of Spain, Trinidad) was awarded and converted on a penalty kick in the 68th minute, extending CofC's lead back to two goals.

The Cougars were able to control possession for the remainder of the game until the 3-1 score went final.

Freshman keeper Kees Heemskerk (Zaandam, Holland) went the distance in net, picking up four saves and earning the first victory of his Cougar career.

The Cougars will return home to host the Nike / Aaron Olitsky Classic at Patriots Point over the weekend of Friday, Sept. 17. CofC will play Bucknell on Friday night and Lehigh on Sunday afternoon.

"We have to continue to build on this performance going into our home tournament next weekend," said Lundy.

Elon 1, Jacksonville 1 (2 OT)

ELON, N.C. - The Elon men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against the Jacksonville Dolphins in the final game of the Elon Classic on Sunday afternoon at Rudd Field. After the visitors scored in the first half, Elon sophomore Chris Thomas netted the equalizer in the 60th minute, but neither team was able to break the tie through 110 minutes of action. Elon moved to 1-2-1 on the season while Jacksonville ended the weekend at 3-1-1.

"The weekend provided good competition in the Classic," Elon head coach Darren Powell said. "In a highly competitive game today, we were able to tie against a very good Jacksonville team. This weekend also allowed us to find out a lot about this current club of players. We will keep trying to improve as the season progresses."

After Elon controlled possession in the second half, it was Jacksonville who has more opportunity in the first extra session. Phoenix keeper Clint Irwin made two incredible game-saving stops, both on shots off the foot of Anthony Forde. Midway through the first OT, Forde found himself one-on-one with Irwin. The senior goalie came out to block away the shot to keep the game knotted at one. Irwin blocked away a second opportunity with only 1:33 remaining in the first overtime.

The Phoenix got back on the offensive in the final 10 minutes of action, specifically in the closing seconds of the contest. Elon got off two late shots from Denzel Ogunyase and Thomas, but JU's keeper Johnny Foley came up with back-to-back stops.

Jacksonville got on the board in the 20th minute in the contest. Predrag Ivanovic crossed a long ball from the right side to the middle of the box. Elon was unable to clear the ball and Forde struck the short shot into the far corner of the net to put the Dolphins on top at 19:29.

Elon had several strong first-half chances, but was unable to get the equalizer. Late in the period, forward Archie Karpeh got a foot on the ball in front of the goalmouth where Foley blocked the shot away. Senior Brad Franks was there for the rebound, but with a tough angle couldn't find the back of the net as Elon headed into halftime scoreless.

At the start of the second half, Thomas got ahead of his defender and lofted a shot over the head of Foley, but the shot careened off the crossbar. Thomas remained active and just minutes later came up with the score. Ogunyase fed the cross from the left side of the field for Thomas who chipped in the goal from about 10 yards out.

Sophomore Gabe Latigue had one of Elon's best opportunities in the second half, taking service from Hunter Miller on the left side of the field. An impressive Foley save kept Latigue's header from finding the back of the net.

Elon will be back in action on Friday night when it faces off at Old Dominion on Friday, Sept. 17 at 8 p.m.

#17 UCLA 2, Davidson 0

LOS ANGELES - The Davidson men's soccer team did not allow a shot on goal in the first half, but No. 17 UCLA responded as Kelyn Rowe scored twice for the Bruins, handing the Wildcats their first defeat of the season, 2-0, Sunday afternoon in Drake Stadium.

Davidson (2-1-2) outshot UCLA (3-1-0), 6-3 in the first half, forcing Bruin goalkeeper Brian Rowe to make three saves, but UCLA turned the tide in the second half. Kelyn Rowe found the back of the net in the 58th and 77th minutes with assists from Shawn Singh and Evan Raynr, respectively, for the win.

"I commend UCLA for their performance, as they demonstrated that they are a talented, well-organized, national championship caliber team," said Davidson head coach Matt Spear. "I am extremely proud of our team's effort and their performance. By scheduling us for five games in 10 days, I was asking a tremendous amount from our players, and they did the best they could do as fatigue became a factor. I felt that we could have won the game in the second half had we been on fresher legs."

Junior goalkeeper Chip Sanders (Thomasville, Ga.) made seven saves for the 'Cats, while Brian Rowe finished with four for UCLA.

"Chip played well and was excellent controlling balls in the air," said Spear. "UCLA had seven corner kicks in the first half and he did a great job preventing them from generating any offensive opportunities."

Junior forward Mark Millard (Oak Ridge, N.C.) nearly gave Davidson a 1-0 lead in the second minute with a shot that went just wide. He did the same in the 12th minute, coming up the middle of the field, but Rowe was there for the stop. Sophomore forward Andrew DiLallo and junior defender Allen Page (Columbus, Ga.) both had headers stopped by Rowe off back-to-back corner kicks late in the first half.

"In the first half I felt we outplayed them and not only had more shots statistically, but more quality scoring chances," said Spear.

Millard and DiLallo both had chances in the second half, but the Wildcats were unable to crack the UCLA defense.

"This was a fantastic experience for us playing against such high caliber opponents in a great environment with many Wildcats fans out to support us. I am proud of the ability and character our players have demonstrated, how they are playing within the system and the direction we are headed."

Davidson will next travel to Gardner-Webb for a match Saturday night at 7 p.m. The Wildcats will next play at Alumni Stadium Tuesday at 7 p.m., taking on ACC foe Virginia Tech.

Notes: Davidson is now 2-2-1 against the last five Top-25 teams it has faced ... as a player, Matt Spear and the Wildcats won 3-1 at UCLA during the 1992 regular season ... current UCLA head coach Jorge Salcedo was a UCLA starter in the 1992 match against Davidson.
