UNCG 1, Utah 0
ATHENS, Ga. - Sophomore Tabitha Padgett scored in the 66th minute to break a scoreless draw and UNCG's defense did the rest as the Spartans topped Utah 1-0 at the Georgia Nike Invitational on Sunday.
Padgett, the reigning Southern Conference Co-Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year, chipped Utah keeper Hannah Turpen at the 65:24 mark for the game's lone goal. Cat Barnekow and Jaimey Etten picked up assists on the play, as Etten started the play with a pass to Barnekow, who slipped the ball to Padgett.
UNCG (3-0) kept the pressure on looking for insurance, with freshman Kristen Schmidbauer and junior Etten forcing Turpen saves in the next seven minutes.
Utah (0-4) had its chances in the contest, but saw three shots hit posts. The Utes had an excellent chance to go on top early, but Lauren Dudley's attempt found the post in the fifth minute. The Utes had some more bad luck in the 17th minute, as Erin Dalley's shot again drew iron. Dalley put yet another shot off the post in the 50th minute.
"It's great to get the win," UNCG coach Eddie Radwanski said. "Any time you can get a win on the road, that's good. Any time you beat a team from the West region, that's a good result. I expected it to be a close game. Utah does a good job. They get a lot of people behind the ball, they make it difficult to play and they defend well.
"For an 11 a.m. game, I thought it would be a bit choppy play at times, and it was. I thought we did a nice job of really just finding a way to get it done and grind out the result. Sometimes you have to do that. That's the sign of a good team, when maybe you're not playing at your best, but you find a way to win."
UNCG keeper Kelsey Kearney made four saves for her second shutout of the season and 21st of her career. That moved her into a tie for second place in school history with Kathryn Clewley, who had 21 shutouts from 1998-2001. Kearney is now just four shy of the school record of 25 set by Jennifer Stillman from 2002-05.
The Utes put the pressure on Kearney to start the second half, with Lexi Krantz forcing a save in the 47th minute, Talley hitting the post in the 50th and Utah getting a corner kick shortly thereafter.
The Spartans weathered the storm and turned the tables, starting with a Padgett shot in the 55th minute that Turpen saved. UNCG rattled off four corner kicks over the next five minutes before Padgett finally found the back of the net in the 66th.
Schmidbauer led UNCG with five shots on the day, while Dalley had four to lead Utah.
Turpen made six saves and allowed one goal.
Despite the Spartans' storied history, the win moved UNCG to 3-0 on the season for the first time in school history.
The Spartans return to action next weekend at the Under Armour Invitational in Fullerton, Calif. UNCG will play Southern Cal on Friday at 8 p.m. Eastern and host Cal State Fullerton on Sunday at 4:30 p.m.
The Citadel 3, Maine 1
Charleston, S.C. - The Citadel Soccer team topped Maine, 3-1, on a hat trick performance by freshman Ruth Leiva to give the Bulldogs the first win of the regular season on Sunday, Aug. 29 at WLI Field.
The Citadel opened the match firing early as senior Nicole Martinoli dribbled from midfield and sent a pass from the top left of the box to freshman Ruth Leiva, who from the center, put the Bulldogs up, 1-0, just over two minutes into the match. Maine's Kaitlyn MacIsaac tried tying the score at the 4:27 mark with a header from Kelsey Wilson's corner kick, however, goalkeeper Laura Serafino was in position for the Bulldog save.
The Citadel offense went on attack again when from the right of the field, freshman Mariana Garcia sent the ball forward to classmate Jaslene Thiara to the right corner. From there Thiara centered a kick to Leiva, who waited for the Black Bears' goalkeeper Meagan Price-Leibenzeder to make the first move before she sent it slowly to the left corner of the net for the Bulldogs' second goal of the match.
Maine attempted five of the final six shots of the half, but The Citadel defense held on to send the Black Bears scoreless into halftime. Maine slightly outshot The Citadel, 6-5, despite the Bulldogs' two-point lead with credit going to Serafino's four saves.
The Citadel's Leiva attempted her skills at the net again to open the second period but the shot was saved by Maine's Price-Leibenzeder. The Black Bears' offense attacked immediately trying to reduce the Bulldogs' lead and controlling much of the second half. At the 74:37 mark, Maine's Wilson took the corner kick and Hannah Breton shot from the left, but Serafino made a leaping catch to maintain the Bulldogs' lead. On a second attempt, Wilson kicked from the center and again Serafino made a diving save. Seconds later, the Black Bears' Maddie Hill fired but it was wide right. After committing two fouls, Maine's Wilson grabbed the loose ball at the top of the box, dribbled left and shot with her left foot to pull the Black Bears' within one to make the score 2-1.
After taking a breather, Leiva re-entered the match for the Bulldogs at the 85:30 mark. Seconds later, on a throw in from junior Leah Hawkins, Leiva settled and circled right to find the ball and kicked it center into the net, sealing a 3-1 victory for the Bulldogs and her third goal of the match.
Maine doubled The Citadel's shots, logging an 18-6 edge with nine on goal. From Serafino's standout performance, she recorded eight saves to pick up her first win of the season. With her three goals earned, Leiva registered six shots, five on goal. Wilson topped the Black Bears' offensive board with seven shots, five on goal. P-Leibenzeder tallied two saves for Maine.
"We started the game off strong and played good soccer through the first half which enabled the team to score two goals," said junior midfielder Hannah Warne. "In the second half we ensured the win with the third goal."
The Bulldogs will being their four-match road slate as they first travel to Colorado Springs, Colo. for the Air Force Academy Tournament. There they will face the host Air Force Academy on Friday, Sept. 3 at 6:30 p.m. (ET). ROCK HILL, S.C.- Appalachian State (1-1) womens soccer bounced back from their opening round loss to defeat Winthrop (0-1-1) in game four of the Winthrop Invitational, 2-1, to clinch second place on the final day.
Defense proved to be key for the Mountaineers as they held Winthrop shotless in the opening period of the match. ASU attempted four shots in the tight first stanza, with junior Sydney Hill attempting two of those. Sophomores Meggie Graham and Sam McVeigh tallied the other two shots.
For their strong defensive effort, the Apps were able to take a 0-0 score into the locker room.
After coming out of the intermission, it did not take long for the Black and Gold offense to fall in line with the defense. Sophomore Hannah Coad (Alpharetta, Ga./Blessed Trinity) received a pass from sophomore Taylor Dunlap (Linden, Mich./Fenton) to take Winthrop goalkeeper Sarah Schippers one-on-one, and score ASU and the contests first goal at the 48:21 minute mark.
The Apps continued to attack the goal and got their second goal of the match minutes later from junior Jordan Horvath (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Lanser), who broke away to give ASU a 2-0 advantage.
Winthrop came out and started their attack on the goal, but senior goalkeeper Caroline Clarke (Greenwood, S.C./Greenwood Christian) saved three straight shots before giving up a goal to WUs Gabrielle Corn with less than 10 minutes left in the contest.
Clarke finished the match with four saves.
Appalachian edged Winthrop in shots, 9-8 in the contest, while WU held the upperhand in corner kicks, 3-2.
It is traditionally a difficult battle between us and Winthrop, but I am really proud of how the girls fought, said ASU head coach Sarah Strickland. It is always tough to win on a Sunday, but our girls came to compete. Hannah (Coad), Jordan (Horvath) and Taylor (Dunlap) rose to the challenge and put the game away for us. We have a lot of work to do before we leave for Marshall and are looking forward to two difficult games next weekend.
Following the conclusion of the contest, an All-Invitational team was named and ASU placed three on the team with Coad, Dunlap and junior Katy Dodd (Apex, N.C./Apex).

Austin Peay 2, Chattanooga 0
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's soccer team fell 2-0 to Austin Peay in the Lady Govs Invitational Sunday afternoon in Clarksville.
"We were a little sore and tired from Friday night's game, so we came out a little slow at the start," UTC Head Coach J.D. Kyzer said. "But I'm really proud of this team. They have a lot of spirit and a lot of fight. Even though we were down by two goals, we were playing like it was a tie game all the way to the end."
Chattanooga (1-3) got down early for the second straight game giving up a goal to the Lady Govs in the 13th minute. After a 30-minute lightning delay, Austin Peay (4-0) was at it again scoring a second goal in the 17th minute.
Chattanooga freshman Taylor Mangrum got the starting nod for the Lady Mocs and was put to the test early with a pair of saves and two shots off the post before Emily Kink found the back of the net at the 12:13 mark. The game was delayed for 30 minutes following the goal due to the threat of lightning.
Once the two teams reentered the pitch, APSU made short work of getting its second goal. Natalie Ariza was assisted by Tatiana Azira and Emily Kink for the score. Tatiana Azira was also credited with the assist on the Lady Govs first goal. Kink had another shot blocked by the UTC defense and Mangrum managed two more saves before the half.
"Both goals were inside the box," Kyzer said. "There was nothing you could do. She did a really good job for us."
In the second half, Chattanooga allowed the Lady Govs to get off eight shots but none were able to find the net as Mangrum nabbed four more saves. The Lady Mocs managed to get four shots off in the latter period with two on goal.
Junior Donna-Kay Henry went down with an injury in the first half and had to come off the field in the seventh minute and was unable to reenter the game until the second half as did Anna Cusick in the 11th minute.
Austin Peay outshot Chattanooga 18-7 with a 10-4 shots on goal advantage. Mangrum had eight saves in her first collegiate start while APSU's Carley Newman and Haylee Shoaff each tallied two saves while splitting time in goal.
The Lady Mocs will return to action next Sunday at Alabama in Tuscaloosa. The game is set to kick off at 2 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. UTC is 1-3 against the Tide. Live stats will be available at the official website of UTC athletics, GoMocs.com.
Francis Marion 3, Wofford 2 (2 OT)
FLORENCE, S.C. - The women's soccer team overcame a two goal deficit in the competition against Francis Marion, scoring the two tying goals in the span of a minute with only six minutes left in the match, but gave up a devastating goal in the second overtime. The match ended in a 3-2 result, giving the Terriers a 2-2 record on the season, while the Patriots improve to 1-4 on the year.
The Patriots were able to take the first advantage of the match in the 28th minute with a goal by Kiley Williams, off a ball pushed ahead in the center of the field from Rebecca Nelson. The Terriers earned their first goalscoring opportunity in the 30th minute when senior Rachael Blackburn ripped a shot from the right wing, only to have it saved by FMU's goalkeeper Lauren Vetock. Maggie O'Brien followed suit with a shot of her own in the 33rd minute, but Vetock was able to spoil the attempt.
Three minutes later freshman Alex Kachulis streamed a shot toward the goal from outside the top of the 18', but Vetock protected the net successfully once again. Late in the first half Chelsea Ashworth was able to put an attempt on frame, but it was saved by the Patriot's keeper. Entering halftime, the Terriers trailed 1-0 after being able to put four shots on frame.
FMU was able to double their lead in the 10th minute of the second half after Adrienna Osorio-McKenna scored from inside the box off an assist from Jordan Allen and Kiley Williams. The Terriers were able to hold off all other attacks for the rest of regulation.
The squad was able to keep cool heads and present a formidable offensive attack throughout the next 25 minutes of play, with two shots by Blackburn and a shot from Anne Phillips until finally in the 85th minute freshman Amanda Morris put the Terriers back into the game with her first goal of the season from an assist by Sydney Reed.
With renewed spirits, the Terriers kept the fire coming and Reed forced a header in the back of the netting off a cross from Blackburn with only five minutes left in regulation. The score tied the game 2-2, and sent the match into overtime with dramatic fashion.
Running on uplifted momentum, Kachulis was able to let a shot attempt fly in the opening 30 seconds of the first overtime, but the shot was saved by Vetock. Two minutes into the first overtime, Erika Christensen delivered a crucial save off William's shot attempt at the top of the box.
With only a minute left in the first overtime play, Emily Bougas, who delivered the game winning shot in overtime just two days prior, pushes a header toward the Patriot frame, but just barely missed as it clanked off the crossbar.
In the first minute of the second overtime, the Patriot's Rebecca Nelson knocked in the game winner to end the match in double overtime.
The Terriers managed to get off 14 shots throughout the afternoon, with nine shots being on target. The Terriers return to action on Snyder Field next Sunday, Sept. 5, where they face USC Upstate at 2:00 p.m.
