Freshmen Power Furman Past USC Upstate, 5-0

Greenville, S.C. -- Junior Laura White scored 28 seconds into the match and Furman's freshman class followed with four second half goals to lift the Paladins to a 5-0 victory over USC Upstate in non-conference women's soccer action on Tuesday at Stone Stadium.

The win, Furman's first of the 2010 season, improves the Paladins to 1-1 while USC Upstate falls to 0-2.

"It was great to get our first win of the season and to have so many players contribute," said Furman head coach Andrew Burr.  "We finished our chances tonight and played with a lot of confidence."

White opened the scoring just 28 seconds into the match when Rachel Shelnutt delivered a cross from the left side of the box and the Atlanta, Ga., native finished at the far post for her first goal of the season.  Despite a 14-3 edge in shots over the opening 45 minutes, Furman went into halftime with a 1-0 lead.

Freshman Emily Cooper doubled the lead at the 65:27 mark.  The Auckland, New Zealand, native beat her defender through the left channel and unleashed a shot over the head of USC Upstate keeper Rachel Collins to tally her first collegiate goal.

In the 77th minute, freshman Colleen Lynch sent a corner kick into the box and Dee Makris collected a fired a shot that was redirected into the back of the net by freshman Caitlin Shelton for her first goal as a Paladin.

Furman added two more goals at the 86:55 mark and again just 16 seconds later.  Makris gave the Paladins a 4-0 cushion tucking a shot into the right corner past Collins before Lynch played Cooper into space on the right side and freshman Ellen Moore tapped in a Cooper cross from point-blank range.

Furman held a 27-4 edge in shot attempts and 10-1 advantage in corner kicks attempted.  Junior Jessica Smith recorded one save to notch the shutout in goal for the Paladins while Collins stopped nine shots in a losing effort for Upstate.

Furman returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to face Southeastern Conference member Alabama in an 8 p.m. contest.
