Three Teams Earn First Victories of 2010 on Sunday

Wofford 6, Alabama State 0

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Wofford women's soccer team defeated Alabama State University by a score of 6-0, giving them their first win of the season. The decisive victory brings the Terriers to 1-1 on the season.

Close to halfway through the first half the freshman Emily Bougas started the show with a chip-in goal from an assist by Anne Phillips. This was Bougas's first goal on the season and her first point as a Terrier. Soon after in the 26th minute, Nikki Siebert was able to fire a shot in to give the Terriers a two goal advantage. Siebert was able to score off an assist from Bougas.

In the second half, the team was able to light up the scoreboard and statbook as four more goals were put into the net. Bougas knocked in her second goal of the game from an assist by Siebert. Siebert was able to match her teammate as she streamed in her second goal of the game off an assist from Lauren Cozzarelli. Siebert stayed busy, as she assisted freshman Alex Kachulis on her first goal of the game and the first points of her career. The final goal of the afternoon was slipped in by Ellen Ezekiel. Her score accounts for the sophomore's first goal of her career.

Today's performance goes into the record books as one of the highest scored contests in Terrier history. At the end of the game Siebert accounted for two goals and two assists, giving her eight total goals in her career. Bougas tallied two goals and one assist, and Katie McChesney was credited with a shutout. The shutout marks for McChesney's 11th of her tenure at Wofford.

The Terriers look to continue their success against Presbyterian College this Friday, August 27th, at 7:00 PM. The match will be the team's first competition at home this season.

Davidson 2, UNC Wilmington 0

DAVIDSON, N.C. - Senior Allison Drutchas (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) opened the 2010 season for the Davidson women¹s soccer team with her fourth career goal 16 minutes into the game and Davidson went on to earn a 2-0 shutout win over visiting UNC Wilmington on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.

Davidson (1-0) halted its three-match losing skid to UNCW (0-2) as it opened the season with a win for the third straight year. The 'Cats improved to 5-2 in season-openers under head coach Greg Ashton and dating back to last regular season, Davidson is 7-0-1.

Drutchas got her senior campaign started off on a solid note as she gathered in a blocked rebound shot from 22 yards out and fired the ball across the box to the far post for the first goal of the game at the 16:58 mark.

Three minutes later, freshman Kelsey Krueger (Keller, Texas) tallied her first collegiate goal when she kicked in a loose ball off a corner kick by Drutchas that landed in the goalie box and had been headed by three players before coming to rest at the feet of Krueger, who spun and drilled in a shot to the near post.

The Seahawks' best chance for a goal came in the 33rd minute on a penalty kick, but Erin Pardini hit the cross bar and the ball was cleared out.

Junior Jessie Baxa (Bloomfield, Mich.) was credited with four saves in the shutout win.

Davidson held a 13-8 advantage on shots, led by Krueger¹s seven.  UNCW had a
5-4 edge on corner kicks.

The Wildcats return to action on Friday, Aug. 27, when they head down I-77 to take on cross-county rival Charlotte at 7 p.m. They then finish out the weekend with a 7 p.m. home contest against High Point.

Chattanooga 2, Tennessee Tech 1

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's soccer team returned to Finley Stadium for the first since 2004 and tallied a thrilling 2-1 victory over Tennessee Tech in front of nearly 500 fans at the South Side stadium Sunday afternoon.

The Golden Eagles got on the board in the first half on a goal by Andrea Meloff. Tennessee Tech's Ellie Iaciofano, running down the middle of the field, got off a pass as she was tripped to Meloff on the right. Meloff then took the ball and shot just over the outstretched hand of Chattanooga keeper Taylor Davidson (Ooltewah, Tenn.) in the 30th minute for the 1-0 lead.

Tennessee Tech controlled the ball throughout most of the first half allowing just one shot by the Lady Mocs and led 1-0 at halftime.

Chattanooga stepped up the offense in the second half with six shots to the TTU's eight and scored two goals for the win.

The equalizer came at the 56:55 mark from freshmen Kerbi Towry (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) who nabbed her first collegiate goal. Sophomore Kelsey Swann (Hixson, Tenn.) sent a pass from the right to the front of the net with several UTC players waiting. Towry picked up the pass and headed the ball into the top left corner to tie it up 1-1.

Late in the game, the Tennessee Tech keeper scooped up a pass from her own player that led to a penalty and an indirect free kick for Chattanooga. Four UTC players were at the penalty line discussing strategy as the Golden Eagle defense set up a wall in front of the net.

Sophomore Anna Cusick (Norcross, Ga.) tapped the ball to junior Donna-Kay Henry (Queens Village, N.Y.) who sent a strong shot over the defense and into the top right of the net for the game winner.

Tennessee Tech outshot UTC 11-7 and held the advantage on shots on goal 6-4. Davidson had five saves on the day while TTU's keeper Megan Polk managed two.

The Lady Mocs will hit the road for a six-game stretch beginning next weekend at Austin Peay for the Lady Govs Invitational. Chattanooga will take on Miami (Ohio) in a neutral match Friday evening. Live stats will be available at GoMocs.com, the official website of Chattanooga athletics.

#18 Memphis 3, Samford 0

MEMPHIS, Tenn. --- The Samford University soccer team was defeated by the 18th-ranked Memphis Lady Tigers on Sunday as the non-conference foes squared off in an early-season contest held at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex.

With the loss, Samford (0-2) concluded its season-opening road trip with an 0-2 record. In their season opener on Friday, the Bulldogs dropped a 2-1 decision at Alabama.

Memphis (2-0) picked up its first victory in school history against Samford on Sunday. Heading into the match, the Bulldogs held a 3-0 record in the all-time series between the teams.

Providing the offensive attack for the Lady Tigers on Sunday was freshman forward Rasheeda Ansari. She scored a pair of goals for Memphis including the opening score in the 22nd minute with a goal off of one of Memphis' six first-half corner kicks. Freshman midfielder Christabel Oduro assisted Ansari on her first goal of the season as Ansari found the ball and played it to the left post.

The Lady Tigers' Laura Laufenberg scored her eighth career goal in the 48th minute of play to give Memphis a 2-0 edge early in the second half. Seniors Ashley Berra and Krista Turner were both credited with assists on the Laufenberg goal.

Later in the second half of play, Ansari connected on her second goal of the night in the 58th minute. The Lithonia, Ga., native played the ball inside the box and found the back right post for her second career goal.

Memphis' junior keeper Jordan Boyle recorded her fifth career shutout, earning her second victory of the season. Boyle finished the night with four saves, while Samford's goalkeeper Alyssa Whitehead made seven saves in Sunday's match.

The Samford University soccer team will next be in action Friday at 7 p.m. (CST) as the Bulldogs begin a five-match homestand against the Southern Miss Golden Eagles at Bulldog Field.

Mercer 4, Georgia Southern 0

MACON, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Women's Soccer Team dropped its first game of the season 4-0 against Mercer Sunday afternoon at Bear Field in Macon, Ga. Georgia Southern is 0-1-0 on the season, while Mercer starts 2010 1-0-0.

The Bears struck first, breaking down the Eagle defense for a goal in 10th minute by Sara Elliott. Lizzy Shaughnessy started the play, hitting Casey Barrett from midfield. Barrett sent the ball from the right corner to the top of the box, finding Elliott, who beat Georgia Southern goalkeeper Missy Meyer (Alpharetta, Ga.) in the right side of the net.

The Bears found the back of the net for the second time in the 17th minute, when Emily Milone collected a rebound off a corner kick and found the top-right corner of the goal from 25 yards out.

The Eagles appeared to cut the lead in half when Alex Murphy (Cincinnati, Ohio) headed a corner kick off the foot of Carlee Storey (Medford, Ore.) into the net in the 32nd minute, but the goal was disallowed because of a foul called on the Eagles.

Milone scored her second goal of the game in the 64th minute, beating Katie Merson (Albuquerque, N.M.), who relieved Meyer at the start of the second half. Four minutes later, Lauren Johnson pushed the lead to 4-0 when she buried a rebound off a corner kick.

Georgia Southern was only able to get three shots off, while Mercer took nine shots, placing seven on frame. Meyer recorded two saves, while Merson had one.

The Eagles are on the road again on Saturday, Aug. 28, when they take on USC Upstate in Spartanburg, S.C. The Game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
