CHARLESTON, S.C. - The College of Charleston women's tennis team was one of 72 Division I programs to be honored on the 2010 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team.
Last season, the Cougars captured their second consecutive Southern Conference Championship title to earn back-to-back NCAA Tournament berths. They ended the season at 20-10 overall with a perfect 10-0 mark in league play.
"There are not many things that are more special than winning the Southern Conference Championship, however, being named an Academic All-America Team is one of them," said CofC head coach and director of tennis Angelo Anastopoulo. "I am so proud of our student-athletes. They put so much time into their academic work and it certainly shows with their impressive team GPA this past season."
Individually, four women's tennis players were named ITA Scholar-Athletes including rising junior and All-SoCon Second Team selection Caroline Newman, sophomore Irene Viana as well as graduating seniors Nina Burgoon and Holly Dowse. Newman, a psychology major who was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team in May, led the team with a perfect 4.0 GPA.
The women's tennis team also won the Cougar CHAMPS Cup which is presented each year to the CofC team that accumulates the most points in five achievement categories: academic excellence, athletic excellence, personal development, career development and service.
