Greenville, S.C. -- Furman University’s Stefanie Kenoyer and Liz Wendt have both advanced through qualifying to earn a spot in the 110th United States Women’s Amateur Championship August 9-15, at the Charlotte Country Club in Charlotte, N.C.
Kenoyer, a rising senior and two-time Southern Conference Player-of-the-Year, fired a 71 on July 13, at The Wanderers Club in Wellington, Fla., to earn a berth in her second straight U.S. Women’s Amateur. The Lighthouse Point, Fla., native paced the Paladins with a 73.6 stroke average during the 2009-10 season on her way to earning NGCA All-American Scholar honors.
Wendt, a rising junior, fired a 75 in sectional qualifying on July 19, at River Oaks Country Club in her hometown of Houston, Texas, to secure her first trip to the championship. Wendt compiled a 79.0 stroke average with a low round of 71 as a sophomore.
A total of 156 players will open tournament play with 36 holes of match play August 9-10. The top 64 player following the second day of stroke play will advance to match play.
Furman golfers have a long history of success at the U.S. Women’s Amateur. Former Paladin and LPGA Hall-of-Famer Beth Daniel claimed the U.S. Amateur Championship in 1975 and 1977 while former Furman standout Brandi Jackson claimed a runner-up finish at the tournament in 2002.
