Former Paladin Becomes Second American To Score In Two World Cups.
Rustenburg, South Africa - Former Furman midfielder Clint Dempsey scored his 19th international goal for the United States in the 40th minute of Saturday's 2010 FIFA World Cup opener against England to become just the second American to ever score in two different World Cups as the U.S. forged a 1-1 draw.
Dempsey spun away from a defender outside of the box and hammered a low shot that England keeper Robert Green failed to cover allowing the ball to squirt away and roll across the goal line. The goal knotted the match at 1-1 after England's Steven Gerrard had scored in the opening five minutes.
The goal helped Dempsey join former Fulham striker Brian McBride as the only Americans to tally goals in two World Cups. Dempsey also became the first American to score against England on foreign soil since 1950 while moving into sixth on the United States' all-time scoring ledger.
Ricardo Clark, another former Paladin standout, joined Dempsey in playing the full 90 minutes for the U.S. in their first of three Group C matches. The U.S. continues group play on Friday June 18, when it faces Slovenia at 10 a.m. ET.
