Chattanooga Women’s Golf Tied for 13th after First Round
Mocs tie season-best round 293 during morning wave at NCAA East Regional
GREENVILLE, N.C. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s golf team is tied for 13th after the opening round of the 2010 NCAA East Regional at Ironwood Country Club. Chattanooga’s 293 (+5) ties for its season low round.
The five-over par 293 matches the Mocs’ final round at the Golfweek Conference Challenge (9/15/09) and second round at the SunTrust Gator Women’s Golf Invitational (4/10/10). It was accumulated without margin for error as the Mocs played with four golfers instead of the traditional five.
Junior Emma de Groot fired the first sub-par NCAA round by a UTC golfer with a 71 (-1). Powered by a season-high six birdies, de Groot is tied for 20th overall.
As a team, the Mocs recorded 15 birdies as all four golfers had at least three on their round. Fellow junior Christine Wolf was one off de Groot’s pace with an even-par 72. She is tied for 30th as 42 golfers posted par or better rounds.
Sophomore Maria Juliana Loza is tied for 54th after a 74 (+2) today. Senior Katie Taylor added a 76 (+4) as both Loza and Taylor played solidly.
No. 4 Auburn leads at eight-under par 280 as four of five Tigers shot sub-par rounds led by Carlie Yadloczky’s 68 (-4). No. 11 Pepperdine is one shot back in second at 281 (-7), while South Carolina and No. 18 Tennessee are tied for third at 283 (-5).
The key number for the Mocs is eighth place which is eight shots in front of Chattanooga with six others within that total behind the trio of Tulane, East Tennessee State and Texas Tech which are tied for sixth with the target score of 285. The top eight teams advance to the NCAA Championship May 18-21 in Wilmington, N.C.
East Tennessee State’s Nina Muehl had the round of the day with an eight-under par 64. The trio of Katie Burnett (South Carolina), Danielle Kang (Pepperdine) and Jessica Wallace (Pepperdine) are tied for second at 67 (-5).
The Mocs tee off No. 1 tomorrow morning at 12:31 a.m., led off by Taylor. Chattanooga is once again paired with South Carolina and Tulane.

Cougar Golfers Tied for 17th after First Round of NCAA East Regional
Greenville, S.C. - Vanessa Koechli (Greer, S.C.) carded an even-par 72, while Katharina Boehm (Poing, Germany) and Leigh Whittaker (Baden-Baden, Germany) were just two over as the College of Charleston women's golf team finished the first round with a nine-over par 297 at the NCAA East Regional being held Mar. 6-9 at the Ironwood Country Club in Greenville, N.C. #4 Auburn leads the tournament with a 280, with #11 Pepperdine a shot behind in second. The Cougars are tied with Campbell after the first 18 holes of the 54-hole event.
Koechli was one-under through the front nine, before two bogeys early in the back nine put her one over. She recovered at the 14th hole with a birdie on a par four and nailed pars down the stretch to finish the day with a 72 and a tie for 30th.
After posting three bogeys in the first nine holes, Boehm had three birdies and just two bogeys in the last nine to card a 74 and is tied for 54th. Also tied for 54th is Whittaker who shot even par with the exception of a bogey on hole one and 17.
Ainhoa Nogales (Pozuelo de Alarcon, Spain) is tied for 94th with a 77 and Anna Martin is tied for 119th with an 85 to round out the Cougar effort.
Martin tees off first for the Cougars Friday in the second round from hole 10 at 8:55 a.m., while Nogales goes off at 9:06 a.m. Boehm tees off at 9:17 a.m., while Whittaker tees off at 9:28 a.m. Koechli goes off at 9:39 a.m.

Kenoyer Paces Paladins On Opening Day At NCAA East Regional
Greenville, N.C. -- Junior Stefanie Kenoyer fired an even-par 72 to lead Furman on the opening day of the NCAA East Regional at the par-72, 6,321-yard Ironwood Country Club on Thursday afternoon.
Starting at No. 10, Kenoyer shot a one-under 35 on the back nine before recording two bogeys and a birdie on the front side to finish the opening round in a tie with 12 other golfers for 30th position after 18 holes in the 54-hole tournament.
Furman struggled to a 17-over 305 in round one to share 20th place with the Washington Huskies. Freshman Laura Wearn posted the second best score of the day for Furman carding a four-over par 76. Liz Wendt posted a 77 while Alexa Rancourt and Jackie Hilea both shot 80 in round one.
Fourth-ranked Auburn fired an eight-under 280 to grab a one-stroke lead on Pepperdine and three-stroke edge on South Carolina and Tennessee. Florida, Tulane, East Tennessee State and Texas Tech rounded out the top eight through 18 holes. Only the top eight in the 24-team field will advance to play in the NCAA Championship which will be held at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C.
Nina Muehl of ETSU raced into the first round lead and a three-stroke lead by shooting an eight-under 64 on Thursday. Katie Burnett of South Carolina is tied for second along with Danielle Kang and Jessica Wallace of Pepperdine. All three golfers posted a five-under 67 during opening round play.
Second round action is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. on Friday with the final round set to get underway on Saturday morning. Furman, playing with Campbell and ETSU, will tee-off on the front nine beginning at 8 a.m. on Friday.
