SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? College of Charleston catcher Rob Kral has been named the Southern Conference Baseball Player of the Week while Georgia Southern’s Matt Murray has been selected as the league’s Pitcher of the Week for all games from April 26 ? May 2.
Kral led the Cougars to a three-game sweep of Davidson over the weekend to improve to 17-7 in the league. The sophomore catcher was 7-for-12 (.583) at the plate with three home runs and six RBIs. After recording a double and scoring twice in the series opener, Kral had a solo home run and three RBIs in game two. In Sunday’s series finale, he belted a pair of home runs, giving him 13 round-trippers on the year. For the week, Kral posted a 1.417 slugging percentage and a .643 on-base percentage while adding five runs scored.
Right-handed pitcher Matt Murray moved his record to 4-2 with a game two win at Furman on Saturday. Murray threw seven innings while allowing only three hits in the process. Only one run scored off Murray, who limited the Paladins to a .125 batting average. Murray struck out six batters in seven innings en route to a doubleheader sweep of the Paladins as Georgia Southern moved to 16-8 in the SoCon this season.
Other hitters receiving consideration were Eric Phillips (Georgia Southern), Mike Melillo (Elon), David Greene (The Citadel), Ed Jayjack (UNC Greensboro), Drew Gadaire (Davidson), Trey Hayes (Samford), Tyler Kirkpatrick (Western Carolina) and Landon Bennett (Wofford).
Other top performers among pitchers were Colby Hyatt (UNC Greensboro), Ken Ferrer (Elon), Casey Lucchese (College of Charleston), Lex Rutledge (Samford), Matt Talley (The Citadel), Thomas Middour (Davidson) and Pete Noordsy (Wofford).
