CHARLESTON, S.C. ? Matt Andress pitched the second complete game of his career as No. 7 seed Appalachian State topped No. 3 seed Georgia Southern, 6-2, in the first elimination game of the 2010 Bennett Hofford Southern Conference Baseball Championship presented by Carolina Ford Dealers.
Appalachian State (36-17-1) will face the loser of the College of Charleston and Western Carolina game Friday at 3 p.m. With its second loss of the tournament, Georgia Southern (34-24) was eliminated.
Andress earned the 26th victory of his career, making him the Mountaineers’ all-time leader. He surrendered two earned runs on nine hits and struck out 11.
Dexter Bobo (1-2) took the loss for Georgia Southern in his first career start. He gave up three runs, one of which was earned, on three hits. The senior retired seven in 5.2 innings of work.
Outfielder Chris Alessandria led the Mountaineers at the plate, batting 3-for-3, bringing in two runs and scoring twice. Catcher Jerod Faggart notched two RBIs.
Designated hitter Victor Roache and third baseman A.J. Wirnsberger both hit 2-for-4 for the Eagles. Wirnsberger and outfielder Shawn Payne each notched an RBI.
ASU got on the board in the bottom of the second. Outfielder Jack Myers reached base on a fielding error by GSU shortstop Eric Phillips. Alessandria then homered to left center to bring in Myers and stake ASU to a 2-0 lead.
The Eagles cut the deficit to one in the top of the fifth as Shawn Payne singled to right center, scoring fellow outfielder Arthur Owens.
The Mountaineers extended the lead back to two in the sixth as designated hitter Jeremy Dowdy doubled to center field and plated second baseman Wes Hobson.
GSU fired back in the seventh. Wirnsberger led off in the top of the inning, sending the first pitch just beyond the center field wall to put the score at 3-2.
ASU responded in the bottom of the seventh, adding three runs to the board. Third baseman Hector Crespo reached base on a fielder’s choice and plated Alessandria. Faggart doubled to left field bringing in Crespo and shortstop Doug Jones.
The Eagles committed two errors and left eight runners on base, while the Mountaineers stranded four.
