SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? The Citadel first baseman Justin Mackert has been named the Southern Conference Baseball Player of the Week while Elon’s Ken Ferrer has been selected as the league’s Pitcher of the Week for all games from May 17-23.
Mackert batted .500 (8-for-16) in four games last week as The Citadel ran its season-long win streak to eight games and clinched the outright Southern Conference regular season championship for the first time since 2002. The sophomore homered in each game at Georgia Southern while recording at least one hit, one run and one RBI in all four games. He stole two bases, collected 19 total bases on the week and registered a slugging percentage of 1.188.
Ferrer, a junior right-hander, threw his first career complete game as Elon closed the regular season with a key 5-1 win over Samford to finish in a tie for third in the SoCon standings. Ferrer tossed just 99 pitches to go the distance, surrendering one run on five hits while striking out four. His performance improved as the game progressed, allowing just one hit after the fifth inning against a Bulldogs team that led the conference in hitting this season in league games.
Other hitters receiving consideration were Brian Harrison (Furman), Matt Johns (Western Carolina), Chris Alessandria (Appalachian State), Joey Bergman (College of Charleston), Scott Riddle (Elon), Trey Hayes (Samford) and James Foster (Wofford).
Other top performers among pitchers were Ian Parry (Furman), Casey Lucchese (College of Charleston), Matt Benedict (Western Carolina), Matt Talley (The Citadel), Chris Patterson (Appalachian State) and Brandon Yarusi (Wofford).
