Aidemark, Newman, Bevillard Earn Academic Honors

UNCG’s Sofia Aidemark earns CoSIDA Academic All-District honors for the second straight year

 

GREENSBORO, N.C. ? UNC Greensboro women’s golfer Sofia Aidemark was named to the ESPN Magazine CoSIDA Academic All-District at-large squad on Thursday.

 

Earning her second straight first-team all-district selection, Aidemark will now be eligible for the national All-America ballot later this month.

 

The voting is done by sports information directors on a regional and national level.

 

A senior from Laholm, Sweden, she graduated with a 3.97 GPA in Communications. The university;s first international student to be inducted into Phi Beta Kappa last month, Aidemark earned Dean’s List six out of her first seven semesters at UNCG and Chancellor’s List each of the first five semesters she was eligible for it. Those honors haven’t been announced for the spring 2010 semester as of yet.

 

Athletically, Aidemark had a 77.72 stroke average in 32 rounds this season.

She finished 11th at the Southern Conference Championship last month. Her best finish of the year came at the UNCG Starmount Fall Classic, when she finished 10th.

 

 

 

Newman Named to ESPN Academic All-District First Team

 

CHARLESTON, S.C. - College of Charleston women's tennis playerCaroline Newman (Greensboro, N.C./Page) was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team on Thursday.

 

Newman was one of 10 women to receive the honor in the university division of District III, which includes North and South Carolina. Athletes from 13 different Division I sports were eligible including golf, swimming and tennis. Student-athletes had to be of sophomore standing and have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.30 or higher as well as have competed in at least 50 percent of the team's contests in order to be nominated.

 

Newman boasts a perfect 4.0 GPA as a Psychology major with a minor in Neuroscience and is a four-time Highly Distinguished Honors recipient. She was named to the SoCon All-Conference Second Team at the No. 3 spot this year and was the only player in the league to have a perfect 10-0 conference record in singles. She led the Cougars with a 20-7 record in singles, including a 14-3 mark as the No. 3 seed.

 

Newman and her teammates defeated Furman in the Southern Conference championship match to win their second consecutive conference championship and berth to the NCAA tournament. The Cougars lost to ninth-ranked Clemson at the NCAA Regionals on May 14.

 

Student-Athletes selected first-team all-district will have the opportunity to be chosen to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Team, which will be released in early June.

 

 

 

Bevillard Named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Second Team

 

STATESBORO, Ga. - Caroline Bevillard, a member of the Georgia Southern University Swimming and Diving team, has been named to theESPN The Magazine Academic All-District women's at-large second team for District III. Bevillard, who recently completed her junior year, possesses a cumulative 3.96 grade point average with a major in Sport Management. She holds the University record in the 200-yard Freestyle event and is a member of the University record-holding 200-, 400- and 800-yard Freestyle Relay Teams.

 

Bevillard was named to the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association All-Academic Team and was a member of the Eagles team selected as a Scholar All-American team by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America in the fall. Over the previous five semesters, she earned a spot on the University's President's List (4.0 GPA) four times and was a member of the Dean's List (3.5 GPA or better) for one semester. Bevillard was recognized as Georgia Southern's Scholar-Athlete for the 2009-2010 year and was selected by the NCAA to participate in the 2010 Career in Sports Forum held in Indianapolis last week.
