SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? Georgia Southern first baseman Kyle Blackburn has been named the Southern Conference Baseball Player of the Week while The Citadel’s Matt Talley has been selected as the league’s Pitcher of the Week for all games from May 10-16.
Blackburn paced the Eagles in the five games last week, batting .579 (11-for-19) while collecting at least one hit in each game. He launched two home runs, both at Davidson, to move his season total to 15. Using three doubles and two home runs, drove in nine RBIs and scored nine times, including four in the opening game at Davidson on Thursday. The senior recorded a slugging percentage of 1.053 in the five games with an on-base mark of .600 while Georgia Southern was a perfect 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the Southern Conference.
Talley threw his second complete game shutout in four weeks on Saturday against UNC Greensboro in a 5-0 Bulldogs’ win. Talley scattered seven hits and struck out eight, walking only one in the shutout. The southpaw followed teammate Asher Wojciechowski’s complete game on Friday to post back-to-back complete games for The Citadel, which surrendered just three runs in the three-game series. Talley allowed just one extra-base hit as he improved to 6-3 on the season and 5-1 in Southern Conference play.
Other hitters receiving consideration were Jose Rodriguez (College of Charleston), Matt Johns (Western Carolina), Kyle Jordan (The Citadel), Andrew Barna (Davidson), Aaron Thompkins (Furman), Trey Hayes (Samford) and Konstantine Diamaduros (Wofford).
Other top performers among pitchers were Lex Rutledge (Samford), Kevin Decker (College of Charleston), Daniel Stallsmith (Furman), Matt Murray (Georgia Southern), Brandon Johnson (Western Carolina) and Brandon Yarusi (Wofford).
