SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? Wofford catcher Mac Doyle has been named the Southern Conference Baseball Player of the Week while Samford’s Josh Martin has been selected as the league’s Pitcher of the Week for all games from May 3-9.
Doyle batted .462 (6-for-13) in four games last week while leading Wofford to a Southern Conference series win over visiting Samford. The Terriers’ sophomore backstop collected a pair of hits in each of the team’s first three games last week, totaling six RBIs and seven runs scored. Doyle also recorded a pair of doubles against East Tennessee State on Wednesday and blasted his 16th home run of the season in Friday’s game one win over Samford. In addition to his hits, Doyle drew six walks and was hit by a pitch to register a .650 on base percentage in 20 plate appearances.
Martin held Wofford scoreless for 6.2 innings, allowing just three hits in Samford’s 13-0 win in the final game of the teams’ SoCon series on Sunday. Martin combined with two other Samford pitchers to post the school’s first shutout in Southern Conference play and its first shutout overall in more than two years. The sophomore struck out four Wofford batters to register his fourth victory of the season.
Other hitters receiving consideration were Joey Bergman (College of Charleston), Bryan Altman (The Citadel), Trevor Collias (Western Carolina), Ryan Adams (Elon), Andrew Barna (Davidson), Shawn Payne (Georgia Southern) and Mason Meredeth (Samford).
Other top performers among pitchers were Daniel Britt (Elon), Michael Clevinger (The Citadel), Bobby Streisel (Wofford), Kevin Decker (College of Charleston), Andy Moye (Georgia Southern) and Matt Benedict (Western Carolina).
