RICHMOND, Va. -- Days after being honored as the Southern Conference's Player of the Week, Elon senior catcher Mike Melillo was named the Southeast Player of the Week by CollegeBaseballInsider.com. Melillo helped the Phoenix to a 4-1 week, including a three-game league series sweep at UNC Greensboro.
Melillo batted .476 (10-for-21) in five games last week. He had four multi-hit games and seven of his 10 hits were of the extra base variety. Melillo had three doubles, two triples and a pair of home runs. The Annandale, N.J. native was 2-for-4 with four RBI in Elon's 17-12 win over Wake Forest on Wednesday. He followed that up with a 4-for-4, five-RBI performance in Friday's series-opening win at UNC Greensboro. On the week, Melillo drove in 13 runs and scored seven times.
On the year, Melillo ended the week hitting a team-leading .350 (43-for-123). He also led the squad with 30 runs scored, nine doubles, four triples and 33 RBI through Sunday's games. His performance has helped the Phoenix to a 19-10 overall record and an 8-4 SoCon ledger through April 4.
Melillo and the Phoenix will play host to Georgia Southern in a key three-game Southern Conference series beginning Friday night at 7 p.m. from Latham Park.
