SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Western Carolina's Felisha Garren and Appalachian State's Danielle Thorpe have been named the Southern Conference Women's Outdoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week for all meets April 2-3. This marks Thorpe's second honor of the season. The selections are made by the league's track & field coaches.
A sophomore from Fletcher, N.C., Garren won the 400m at UNC Wilmington's Beaches vs. Mountains with a personal-best time of 55.59. She also ran a leg in both the 4x100m and 4x400m relays, in which the Catamounts posted times of 45.75 and 3:44.43, respectively. Both times currently rank first in the conference, while the 4x400m relay squad claimed its third title of the season.
Thorpe, a senior from Durham, N.C., took first place in the triple jump at the Beaches vs. Mountains. Her season-best leap of 41' 1.75" currently leads the league by more than one foot, while she also ranks 11th in the east region and 25th in the nation. She registered a mark of 78' 9.75" in the long jump to finish second and ran a leg of the Mountaineers' 4x100m relay team that took third place.
The Catamounts host the WCU Invitational on April 16, while the Mountaineers return to action Friday at The Carolina's Cup in Rock Hill, S.C.
Other top track performers included:
Wofford's Shelby Harris, a freshman from Greenwood, S.C., who finished seventh in the 10K at the Duke Invitational. Her time of 39:04.82 set a new school record.
Other top field performers included:
Georgia Southern's Demetrise Anthony, a senior from Manchester, Ga., who posted a league-leading mark of 19' 1" in the long jump at the Albany State Invitational. She also ran the 100m with a time of 12.00, which ranks second in the conference. Anthony was a member of the 4x100m relay team that registered a time of 47.00, good for second in the league.
