Men's Tennis Southern Conference

Wednesday's Men's Tennis Roundup

Chattanooga 4, Samford 3

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's tennis team continues to show signs of improvement late in the season.  The Mocs scored their first Southern Conference road win of the year with a 4-3 victory at Samford today.

Chattanooga rallied from a 3-1 deficit to take the last three singles matches and the win.  UTC improves to 4-13 on the year and 2-7 in SoCon action.  The Bulldogs drop to 10-9 overall and 2-5 in league play.

Despite the poor performance, Chattanooga may have had one of those defining moments between the doubles and singles matches.  Starting six freshmen, Garcia had been looking for someone on the team to step up and take a leadership role.

Freshman William Disterdick quickly tied the score with a win at No. 5.  He defeated Michael Browder 6-0, 6-3 in less than an hour for his third straight win.  Samford took the next two matches to go up 3-1, one point away from clinching the win.

Freshman Stephen Crofford made it 3-2 win a 6-1, 6-4 over Adam Witcher at No. 6.  Freshman Roberto Vieira tied it up with a 6-2, 7-6 (5) win over Carson Kadi at No. 1.  It was Vieira's third consecutive win and the fifth in his last six matches.

Freshman Jackson Tresnan closed out the match with a three-set (6-7, 7-3, 6-0) win over Carl Abalos at No. 4.  He slammed the door on the Bulldogs by winning 6-0 in the deciding set.

The Citadel 6, Brevard 1

BREVARD, N.C.-The Citadel tennis team dominated singles competition to claim a 6-1 win against Brevard College for their second consecutive win on Wednesday. The Bulldogs improved to 8-12 overall, while the host Tornados slipped to 6-8 on the season.

The Citadel opened the match by claiming the doubles point, but not without a fight from the Tornados. The tandem of Alberto Diaz and Yufo Sutantio opened with a 9-8 (5-0) win over Brevard's Dorian Feron and Scott McCormick. Bulldogs David Orces and Derek Dickey followed by cruising to an 8-3 victory at second doubles. Josh Cook and Luis Morett clinched the doubles point with a 9-8 (3-0) triumph over Jonathan Kuhn and Andrew Thompson.

The Dogs continued their domination by winning the top three singles matches. Sutantio opened with a 7-6 (5-0), 6-3 victory over McCormick. The second seeded Diaz provided the Bulldogs cushion with a pair of 7-5, 6-3 victories over Altizer. The Citadel picked up the clinching point from Orces, who completed a sweep over Kuhn (6-3, 6-1).

Brevard's Jarred Fisher won his first set and outlasted Josh Cook in a second-set tiebreaker at No. 4 singles to lay claim to the only Brevard point.

Dickey completed the third sweep of the afternoon with a pair of 6-4, 6-3 wins over Thompson from the fifth singles slot. Luis Morett finished off the Bulldogs' victory with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Brevard's Shane Apps.

The Bulldogs return to Southern Conference play on Friday, April 9 when they travel to Appalachian State. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
