Jimenez Sarmiento Named Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Western Carolina's Karen Jimenez Sarmiento has been named the Southern Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week for all matches March 29-April 4 the league office announced Wednesday (April 7).  Jimenez Sarmiento finished the week 2-0 in singles play and went 1-1 in doubles competition for the Catamounts.  The Player of the Week is awarded by the conference office.

Competing at No. 5 singles, Jimenez Sarmento topped Chattanooga's Charlotte Bossy, 6-2, 6-1 in her first match of the week.  The native of Bogata, Colombia then downed Lucy Schermerhorn of Wofford, 6-1, 6-1 in a 4-3 Catamount win on April 3 to improve her record to 6-5 this season.  The junior has now won four of her last five matches in singles competition.

Jimenez Sarmiento teamed with Carolina Lainez at No. 2 doubles and went 1-1 last week.  They fell to Chattanooga's Emily Hangstefer and Bossy, 8-4 before topping Wofford's Schermerhorn and Sabrina Smyers, 8-1.

The Catamounts return to action Friday (April 9) when they visit Appalachian State at 1:00 p.m.

Other top performers in the Southern Conference included College of Charleston's Holly Dowse, Furman's Monica Arguello and Chattanooga's Jenna Nurik.
