Johnson Leads Elon to Mimosa Hills Title
MORGANTON, N.C. -- Kelsey Johnson's two-round score of 150 helped lead the Elon women's golf team to its first team title of the season as the Phoenix won the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate by three strokes over Southern Conference rival Appalachian State. Elon posted a two-day total of 607 (305-302) to lead the 15-team field.
Johnson two rounds of 75 placed her in a tie for seventh individually out of 78 golfers in the field. She finished the event averaging a 4.05 on par four holes, the second-best number in the field.
Three strokes back of Johnson sat both Tara McFadden and Diana Davis who tied for 17th. McFadden posted rounds of 78 and 75 while Davis carded a 77 and 76 to reach 153.
Both McFadden and Johnson tallied 24 pars.
Lauren Lebak placed in a tie for 23rd following a two-round score of 154 (78-76) while Shannon Prunty finished in a tie for 27th with a 156 (75-81).
Elon led the field with a 4.22 stroke average on par four holes and was tied for third with 18 birdies.
Wofford's Sarah Hurt won the event with a two-day score of 141 (72-69). She was four strokes ahead of North Carolina State's Julie Saleeby.
Behind Elon and Appalachian State (308-302--610) in the top five were Western Carolina (306-306--612), Richmond (317-296--613) and Wofford (313-303--616). The Citadel was the only other SoCon team in the field. The Bulldogs placed 15th with a score of 668 (338-330).
The Phoenix will now prepare for the Southern Conference Tournament which will be played in Hilton Head, S.C. on April 18-20.
Hurt Claims Individual Title at Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate
MORGANTON, N.C. ? Wofford sophomore Sarah Hurt claimed the individual title at the 2010 Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate after firing a tournament record three-under par 141 (72-69) over two rounds.
Hurt finished the tournament four strokes ahead of second-place Julie Saleeby of NC State, playing as an individual, and led the Terriers to a fifth-place finish overall. Hurt, who led the tournament with eight birdies, carded an individual-round low of 69 over the final 18 holes en route to the title.
The individual title marks Hurt’s first of her collegiate career. The sophomore from Southlake, Texas leads the team with four top-twenty finishes this season.
Junior Alex Rankin finished tied for 17th individually after a two-round score of 153 (77-76). Senior Sarah Herbert carded a 156 (77-79) to tie for 27th and junior Meredith Few and freshman Tarah Taylor each recorded a score of 166.
As a team, the Terriers improved upon their first round score of 313 with a second round score of 303 to finish the tournament at 616 (+40).
First-round team leader, Elon, capitalized on its opening-round, three-stroke advantage over Appalachian State, matching the Mountaineers’ final round team 302 to repeat as the team champion Tuesday at the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate contested at the par-72, 5,869-yard Mimosa Hills Golf Club.
The Terriers will hit the course again April 18-20 at the 2010 Southern Conference Championship, taking place at Moss Creek Golf Club in Hilton Head, S.C.
Women’s Golf Finishes Second at Mimosa Hills
MORGANTON, N.C. - Yue Xu fired a 76-71=147 (+3) to take third place overall and lead Appalachian State University women’s golf to a second place finish at the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate with a 308-302=610 (+34). The finish matches the team’s best of the spring and bodes well for the squad as it looks ahead to the Southern Conference Tournament, April 18-20.
Fellow freshman Kristina Boo had a solid outing for the Mountaineers in 12th place at 78-74=152 (+8) while Brooke DeHart was just two strokes back at 75-79=154 (+10), good for 23rd.
Rumbidzai Masamvu carded a 79-78=157 (+13) in 33rd place and Kerri Dice finished in 59th place at 81-84=165 (+21).
Elon won the event at Mimosa Hills Country Club with a 305-302=607 (+31) and Western Carolina dropped from second place on Monday into third, behind ASU, at 306-306=612 (+36).
Wofford’s Sarah Hurt won the individual title at 72-69=141 (-3) as the Terriers placed fifth, three strokes behind Richmond. Also competing from the SoCon, The Citadel placed 15th.
The season-ending SoCon Tournament is at Moss Creek in Hilton Head, S.C. from April 18-20.

Wofford’s Sarah Hurt, who led after Monday’s opening round, broke last year’s individual tournament record by shooting a three-under, 141, over the two day event to claim the individual medalist honors by four strokes over second-place Julie Saleeby of North Carolina State who played as an individual. Hurt, who led the tourney with eight birdies, carded an individual-round low of 69 over the final 18 holes en route to the title.
Appalachian State’s Yue Xu fired a one-under 71 on Tuesday to finish third overall at three-over, 147, while NCSU’s Cindel Gwyn (148) was fourth followed by Morgan Stepanek of William & Mary and WCU’s Blaire Minter at five-over, 149, to round out the top five finishers.
Elon picked up where it left off a season ago as the Phoenix mounted a second-day charge to finish as the tournament runner-up last year, one stroke behind Augusta State. This time, Elon led from start-to-finish to win the 2010 team crown.
A third Southern Conference school, tournament-host Western Carolina, finished third for a second-consecutive season by carding back-to-back rounds of 306 as a team to edge Richmond, which moved from a tie for sixth to finish fourth. The Spiders carded a tournament-record low round of 296 on Tuesday to finish fourth, one stroke behind WCU. A fourth SoCon school rounded out the top five teams as Wofford, led by individual champion, Hurt, finished fifth overall.
For Western Carolina behind Minter, freshman Malin Jansson posted the team’s second-round low score of one-over 73 to finish tied for seventh with a two-day tally of 150. Josefine Sundh, who carded 24 pars in the 36-hole event, finished tied for 17th overall with a two-day score of 153, trimming a stroke of her opening round 77 on Tuesday.
Rounding out WCU’s finishers were sophomore Rachel Nelson in a tie for 40th and senior Desiree Karlsson in a tie for 44th as the duo each carded 83 in the final round.
Western Carolina, which posted four team championships during the 2009-10 campaign, returns to action on April 17-20 at the Moss Creek Golf Club for the 2010 Southern Conference Women’s Golf Championships.
The Citadel Golf Concludes Regular Season with 15th Place Finish
Morganton, N.C. - The Citadel golf team wrapped up the 2010 regular season on Tuesday, April 6, with a 15th place finish at the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate in Morganton, N.C. Hosted by Southern Conference opponent Western Carolina at the Mimosa Hills Golf Club, the Bulldogs trimmed their day one score by eight strokes to finish the two day event with a final score of 668 (+92).
Sophomore Bree Baumgartner led The Citadel with a total score of 160 (+16). Firing an 82 on the first day, Baumgartner improved by four strokes for a day-two score of 78 to move from 50th place to finish tied at 40th. Sophomore Alanna-Jean Keith finished the competition tied in 65th place after shooting an 82 on day-two for a combined score of 167 (+23). Third year Sheri Rockefeller concluded the tournament at 68th place after shooting an overall score of 168 (+24). Junior Christine Clark and senior Natalie Flores rounded out the Bulldog competitors finishing in 70th and 78th place, respectively.
Four SoCon members finished the tournament in the top five. Elon clinched the team title with an overall score of 607 (+31). Appalachian State (610) finished in second, with Western Carolina (612) in third and Wofford (616) in fifth. Richmond claimed the fourth place position with a score of 613 (+37). Wofford's Sarah Hurt took home the individual medalist honors after firing a three-under, 141, to pace North Carolina State's Julie Saleeby by four strokes. Saleeby competed as an individual.
