Elon, Wofford's Hurt Lead at Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate

Johnson, Prunty Have Elon Atop Leaderboard After Round One

MORGANTON, N.C. -- Kelsey Johnson and Shannon Prunty each carded a 75 during the opening round to lead the Elon women's golf team into first place following the first day of the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate.  The Phoenix shot a 305 as a team to lead host and Southern Conference rival Western Carolina by one stroke.
 
Johnson led the field with a 3.90 stroke average on par four holes on day one.  She also recorded three birdies.  Johnson and Prunty ended round one tied for fifth in the field of 78 golfers.
 
Two strokes back in a tie for 14th place is Diana Davis who posted a 77 during her first round of play.
 
Tied for 24th are both Tara McFadden and Lauren Lebak.  The duo both shot a 78 on day one.
 
Wofford's Sarah Hurt carded an even par 72 to lead the individual field.
 
Elon's 305 gives the Phoenix a one-stroke advantage over Western Carolina (306) and a three-stroke edge on Appalachian State (308) heading into Tuesday's final 18 holes.  William & Mary (312) sits fourth while a fourth SoCon program, Wofford (313), is fifth.  The Citadel is the only other SoCon team in the field and sits 15th after a 338 on day one.
 
In this event last year, Elon made a late charge toward the team title, but fell one stroke shy of champion Augusta State.
 
The second and final round will be played on Tuesday.

 

 

Elon Leads Western Carolina by a Stroke after Opening Round at Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate

WCU was led by junior Blaire Minter, who stands tied for fifth, three strokes off the lead

 

Morganton, N.C. ? Elon carded an opening round 305 to lead tournament-host Western Carolina by a stroke after Monday’s opening round of the 2010 Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate at the par-72, 5,869-yard Mimosa Hills Golf Club. Wofford’s Sara Hurt leads the 78-golfer field after shooting an even-par 72 over the opening 18 holes under beautiful clear spring skies and summer-like temperatures.

 

The second and final round is scheduled for Tuesday morning with a shotgun start beginning at 9:30 am.

 

Hurt carded three birdies and an eagle during her opening round 72 to lead by a stroke over second-place Carolina Sweet (73) from William & Mary. Playing as individuals, teammates Cindel Gwyn and Julie Saleeby of North Carolina State both shot two-over 74 to stand tied for third in the individual standings.

 

Behind the Phoenix and Catamounts, a third Southern Conference team in Appalachian State is third, three strokes in arrears of the leader at 308. William & Mary (312) and a fourth SoCon school, Wofford (313) round out the top five teams.

 

Sophomore Blaire Minter shot a three-over 75 to lead the Catamounts, entering the second day amidst a five-way tie for fifth place just three strokes off the overall individual lead. Junior Josefine Sundh, freshman Malin Jansson and sophomore Rachel Nelson each carded a five-over, 77, to stand two strokes back in a tie for 14th.

 

Sundh was tied with NCSU’s Saleeby with 14 pars over the first 18 holes.

 

Rounding out WCU’s scorers was senior Desiree Karlsson who shot 78 to stand tied for 24th.

 

Western Carolina and Richmond tied for a tournament-high 54 pars, with the Catamounts leading in par-5 scoring at three-under, 4.85. William & Mary and Tennessee Tech both recorded 11 birdies collectively to lead the tournament.

Hurt Leads Field After Opening Round at Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate

 

MORGANTON, N.C.  ? Wofford sophomore Sarah Hurt leads the 78-golfer field at the 2010 Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate after one round of play on Monday.

 

Hurt carded three birdies and an eagle during her opening round 72 to lead by a stroke over second-place Carolina Sweet (73) from William & Mary.

 

Wofford sits in fifth place in the fifteen-field tournament with an opening round score of 313, one stroke behind fourth place William and Mary.
